WHO AM I?
I am a Medical Herbalist, trained in the UK, in
integrated medicine in clinics, hospitals and
university environments
I treat cancer, pre cancerous and chronic auto immune
conditions such as MS, Alzheimer's, thyroid and
women’s problems in a (w) holistic protocol, on a
science evidenced basis with plant drugs
Disclosure - No commercial ties

YOU NEED TO TAKE CHARGE
Because:
We live in age of chronic auto immune disease

Conventional medicine is designed for acute
conditions only

Many chronic diseases arise from
faulty diet, lack of exercise, alcohol
nicotine and stress i.e lifestyle

RESEARCH DRIVEN BY BIG PHARMA
During the last 20 years research has been focussed on genetics and
spinning off extra use out of drugs such as immomodulating agents
As these on the balance of probability showed the quickest and most
profitable routes for MS treatments for Big Pharma – it has not
delivered the expected benefits and results nor substantiated in research
In the 1980’s a Medical Herbalist and Chemistry Professor Kerry Bone was
wrote most of our chronic auto immune disease arose in the gut.
Now this is being recognised in research arising from the Planck institute
in Germany

The thinking behind this hypotheses was that in
MS narrowed arteries and veins led to poor

IS IT SUPRISING NO!
WHY DO ARTERIES AND VEINS GET CLOGGED?

Principally thru poor diet and lack of exercise over years
Ipso facto link to bacterial and viral causes & epidemiology

THE ROLE OF THE GUT
… ……Is fundamental to understanding the causes of chronic auto
immune disease

If the principal causes are bacteria and viruses:
Why do some people have the susceptibility to develop MS?
•

Poor Gut health

•

Poor immune function

•

Reflected in the pattern of epidemiology – low vitamin D, high
grain/sugar diets, poor thyroid function etc

BERER K, ET AL. NATURE. 2011
Ms Berer’s research is provided A LEAP FOR MANKIND
The most exciting development in the last 20 years
She and her team showed how bacteria in the gut over time
alter and create antigens which infect the gut and move
into the myelinating sheath and travel to the brain.
The team also replicated this effect in mice providing the
first scientific clues that gut health is instrumental in
human health for chronic disease

13
WHAT CAN WE DO WITH THIS KNOWLEDGE?
Explains why Plant medicine is so effective at inhibiting
progression as many work in and through the gut

Plant drug medicine has multi level properties - drugs do not
Plants can mimic how bacteria/viruses behave
As long ago as 1952 a Dutch scientist compared Plant viruses
to MS suggesting it was a virus.
Which means plants develop secondary defensive metabolites
to those bacteria and diseases.
PREVENT/INHIBIT MS BY USING PLANTS, DIET, EXERCISE

©

14
IMMUNITY
Plants had millions of yrs. to develop their immune systems
We have had about 10,000 years as omnivores
The plant immune system through secondary metabolites
strengthens and modifies our immune capabilities
IMMUNITY CAN BE BUILT UP USING PROPER
FOODS AND SPICES

DIET
AVOID PROCESSED FOODS
LOVE YOUR VEGGIES
INNOVATE AND EAT A WIDE RANGE OF FOOD STUFFS
Value moderation
ELIMINATE SUGAR FROM YOUR DIET

©

20
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!
What you eat is totally under your control and preventable
medicine
There will never be a drug for bacteria as they mutate like
viruses
Plants have anti bacterial and anti viral properties!
If dimethyl fumarate works ( not a lot of evidence so far )
One of the conclusions should be: there is a predisposition
to MS if you do not eat sufficient fruits and vegetables as
the regular consumption of fumaric acid acts as a
preventative to bacteria - in large doses it is poison!

22
NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES
Our locally grown vegetables do not have sufficient zinc,
selenium

Most people do not eat enough fish- iodine
Most people eat too much processed flour based food –
inhibiting bromine.

All of which is interesting considering that is how
recognised neurological diseases starts in the gut.

©

23
SUGAR
Grains translate to sugars in the body:
Sugar is inflammatory to the body ( inflammation being part of MS
pathological processes )

Sugar provides a better less hostile environment in the gut for bacteria and
viruses to grow and live ( bacteria and viruses part of the pathological
processes of MS )
High circulating sugar levels impede the function of the brain, liver,
kidneys, pancreas and thyroid. The receptors leading to further
biochemical processes in the body are altered.
Obesity and other concomitant diseases

©

24
SUGAR IS WHITE SWEET AND DEADLY!*
The presence of sugar in processed foods has grown exponentially
since 1900 – so has the diagnosis of MS
Globally, sugar consumption has tripled in the past 50 years. But, it
turns out, the greatest threat to human health is one type of
sugar in particular: fructose.
In the US, per-capita consumption of fructose, a common food
additive there – mainly in the form of high-fructose corn syrup –
has increased more than 100-fold since 1970.
Processed foods lack key nutrients. 1tsp =

HERBAL PROTOCOLS
THE BEST ANTI VIRALS ARE PLANTS
MANY PLANTS HAVE ANTI INFLAMMATORY AND ANTI
MICROBIAL PROPERTIES
SOME PLANTS ARE SPECIFIC FOR MS AS THEY INHIBIT
THE DEMYELINATING PROCESS
SOME PLANTS ACTIVATE THE DENDRITIC IMMUNE CELLS
OF OUR BODIES

28
PLANT MEDICINE
The newest drug for MS is dimethyl fumarate
Fumaric acid is found in all fresh fruits and vegetables
With no side effects!
It is also found in a plant called Fumitory and its traditional use is:
An anti inflammatory ( first pathological pathway for MS )
Hepatic stimulant for torpid livers ( poor liver function due to diet )
Anti spasmodic ( relaxing muscles )
Mild laxative and diuretic ( both issues found clinically in MS )

©

29
OTHER PLANTS
There are a significant number of other plants which have
been shown to inhibit and address the pathological
pathways of MS – some of which you may be familiar with
are:
Turmeric, Green Tea, Withania
BUT IN PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL DOSES ONLY
IE NOT OTC PRODUCTS

©

30
TRUE PERSONALISED MEDICINE
I treat every person according to their needs which means there is no one
single protocol
The medicine I use is not available over the counter
Some of the plants I use can regulate the thyroid but not one single plant.
Some Plants have been shown to inhibit the MS processes in the brain

USE PLANTS!

OTC SUPPLEMENTS - CAVEATS
• illegal to sell a medically efficacious dose
• most are not pharmaceutical grade

• no evidence base / extrapolation claims
• Contents /label/marketing claim
• Unnecessary with a proper diet
• No consideration of individual needs
• Failure to address polysupplementation

EXAMPLES OF OTC ISSUES
DO NOT USE RESERVATROL
A supplement widely available and used in cancer Protocols
Reservatrol exacerbates both autoimmune and viral models of multiple sclerosis Sat F. et al Am J Path 2013 Sept 25

DO NOT USE PROTEIN POWDER WHERE THERE
ARE SUGARS – AGAVE, SYNTHETIC SWEETNERS,
Just because its ‘natural’
does not mean its good for you

Holistic Treatment and Prevention of Multiple Sclerosis

  • 2. WHO AM I? I am a Medical Herbalist, trained in the UK, in integrated medicine in clinics, hospitals and university environments I treat cancer, pre cancerous and chronic auto immune conditions such as MS, Alzheimer's, thyroid and women’s problems in a (w) holistic protocol, on a science evidenced basis with plant drugs Disclosure - No commercial ties © 2
  • 3. YOU NEED TO TAKE CHARGE Because: We live in age of chronic auto immune disease Conventional medicine is designed for acute conditions only Many chronic diseases arise from faulty diet, lack of exercise, alcohol nicotine and stress i.e lifestyle © 3
  • 4. MS - STATISTICS Women vs. men Average age 40 No major ethnic differences Previously confined to Northern latitudes Meat & Potato diets vs. primarily vegetable diets Low Vitamin D & low thyroid function Am J Manag Care. 2013 Feb;19(2 Suppl):S15-20. Overview of the epidemiology, diagnosis, and disease progression associated with multiple sclerosis.Tullman MJ. © 4
  • 5. MS TRADITIONAL PATHOLOGY Demyelinating lesions in the brain BUT increasingly there is a re-application of our knowledge towards: VIRUSES AND BACTERIA Human endogenous retroviruses and multiple sclerosis: innocent bystanders or disease determinants? Antony JM, ET AL. Human herpesvirus 6 is latent in peripheral blood of patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. Rotola A,ET AL. J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry. 1999 Oct;67(4):529-31. iochim Biophys Acta. 2011 Feb;1812(2):162-76. © 5
  • 6. RESEARCH DRIVEN BY BIG PHARMA During the last 20 years research has been focussed on genetics and spinning off extra use out of drugs such as immomodulating agents As these on the balance of probability showed the quickest and most profitable routes for MS treatments for Big Pharma – it has not delivered the expected benefits and results nor substantiated in research In the 1980’s a Medical Herbalist and Chemistry Professor Kerry Bone was wrote most of our chronic auto immune disease arose in the gut. Now this is being recognised in research arising from the Planck institute in Germany © 6
  • 7. OHIP PROTOCOLS Negative impact of statins on oligodendrocytes and myelin formation in vitro and in vivo. Klopfleisch S, et al. J Neurosci. 2008 Glatiramer Acetate only slows progression in some cases Interferon-β Therapy Against EAE Is Effective Only When Development of the Disease Depends on the NLRP3 Inflammasome. Fingomolid known to cause heart block Dimethyl fumarate for treatment of multiple sclerosis: mechanism of action, effectiveness, and side effects. Linker RA, Gold R. Curr Neurol Neurosci Rep. 2013 Nov;13(11):394. doi: 10.1007/s11910-0130394-8. © 7
  • 8. 2. 0HIP Surgery The thinking behind this hypotheses was that in MS narrowed arteries and veins led to poor oxygenation of the brain and thus demyelinating lesions. Venous angioplasty in multiple sclerosis: neurological outcome at two years in a cohort of relapsing-remitting patients. Salvi F, Bartolomei I, Buccellato E, Galeotti R, Zamboni P. Funct Neurol. 2012 Jan-Mar;27(1):55-9. © 8
  • 9. 3 OHIP Recently Health Canada showed this treatment protocol is not effective nor confined to MS. Can J Neurol Sci. 2013 Mar;40(2):203-9. An observational study of venoplasty in patients with multiple sclerosis.Pryse-Phillips W, et alDept of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland, IS IT SUPRISING NO! WHY DO ARTERIES AND VEINS GET CLOGGED? Principally thru poor diet and lack of exercise over years Ipso facto link to bacterial and viral causes & epidemiology © 9
  • 10. THE ROLE OF THE GUT … ……Is fundamental to understanding the causes of chronic auto immune disease If the principal causes are bacteria and viruses: Why do some people have the susceptibility to develop MS? • Poor Gut health • Poor immune function • Reflected in the pattern of epidemiology – low vitamin D, high grain/sugar diets, poor thyroid function etc © 10
  • 11. THE MICROBIOME PLoS One. 2013 Apr 16;8(4):e60647. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0060647.. Cortisol awakening response is linked to disease course and progression in multiple sclerosis. Kern S, et al Center for Clinical Neuroscience, Dresden, Germany. Molecular biology, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, the JC virus-induced demyelinating disease of the human brain. Ferenczy MW, et al Clin Microbiol Rev. 2012 Jul;25(3):471-506. Commensal microbiota and myelin autoantigen cooperate to trigger autoimmune demyelination. Berer K, et al. Nature. 2011 © 11
  • 12. KEY FINDINGS: Dietary Deficiencies = Viruses} Bacteria} combine to create most chronic auto immune diseases cancer, alzheimers, parkinsons, MS, arthritis © 12
  • 13. BERER K, ET AL. NATURE. 2011 Ms Berer’s research is provided A LEAP FOR MANKIND The most exciting development in the last 20 years She and her team showed how bacteria in the gut over time alter and create antigens which infect the gut and move into the myelinating sheath and travel to the brain. The team also replicated this effect in mice providing the first scientific clues that gut health is instrumental in human health for chronic disease © 13
  • 14. WHAT CAN WE DO WITH THIS KNOWLEDGE? Explains why Plant medicine is so effective at inhibiting progression as many work in and through the gut Plant drug medicine has multi level properties - drugs do not Plants can mimic how bacteria/viruses behave As long ago as 1952 a Dutch scientist compared Plant viruses to MS suggesting it was a virus. Which means plants develop secondary defensive metabolites to those bacteria and diseases. PREVENT/INHIBIT MS BY USING PLANTS, DIET, EXERCISE © 14
  • 15. IMMUNITY Plants had millions of yrs. to develop their immune systems We have had about 10,000 years as omnivores The plant immune system through secondary metabolites strengthens and modifies our immune capabilities IMMUNITY CAN BE BUILT UP USING PROPER FOODS AND SPICES Ann NY Acad Sci, 2004 Dec;1030:434-41. © 15
  • 16. STRATEGIES FOR PREVENTION/INHIBITION DIET DIET DIET EXERCISE AVOID STRESS USE YOUR BRAIN USE PLANT MEDICINE © 16
  • 17. USE PLANT MEDICINE Many pathways of inflammation in MS – Plants available for all of them Bacterial and Viral properties available in many plants not available in drugElderberry = anti Sars Immodulatory agents – Eccinachea spp Crosstalk between B lymphocytes, microbiota and the intestinal epithelium governs immunity versus metabolism in the gut. • 19. THYROID CONTROLS METABOLISM . Fatigue and regulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis in multiple sclerosis. Gottschalk M, et alF, Weber F. Arch Neurol. 2005 . Dysregulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis is related to the clinical course of MS. Then Bergh F, et al. Neurology. 1999 • Sub clinical Hypothyroidism is endemic in Ontario Plants can repair the thyroid and common deficiencies are zinc & selenium © 19
  • 20. DIET AVOID PROCESSED FOODS LOVE YOUR VEGGIES INNOVATE AND EAT A WIDE RANGE OF FOOD STUFFS Value moderation ELIMINATE SUGAR FROM YOUR DIET © 20
  • 21. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT! What you eat is totally under your control and preventable medicine There will never be a drug for bacteria as they mutate like viruses Plants have anti bacterial and anti viral properties! If dimethyl fumarate works ( not a lot of evidence so far ) One of the conclusions should be: there is a predisposition to MS if you do not eat sufficient fruits and vegetables as the regular consumption of fumaric acid acts as a preventative to bacteria - in large doses it is poison! © 21
  • 22. GUT HEALTH DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU EAT . Diet drives convergence in gut microbiome functions across mammalian phylogeny and within humans. Muegge BD, Kuczynski J, Knights D, Clemente JC, González A, Fontana L, Henrissat B, Knight R, Gordon JI. Science. 2011 May 20;332(6032):970-4. doi: 10.1126/science.1198719. . • 23. NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES Our locally grown vegetables do not have sufficient zinc, selenium Most people do not eat enough fish- iodine Most people eat too much processed flour based food – inhibiting bromine. All of which is interesting considering that is how recognised neurological diseases starts in the gut. © 23
  • 24. SUGAR Grains translate to sugars in the body: Sugar is inflammatory to the body ( inflammation being part of MS pathological processes ) Sugar provides a better less hostile environment in the gut for bacteria and viruses to grow and live ( bacteria and viruses part of the pathological processes of MS ) High circulating sugar levels impede the function of the brain, liver, kidneys, pancreas and thyroid. The receptors leading to further biochemical processes in the body are altered. Obesity and other concomitant diseases © 24
  • 25. SUGAR IS WHITE SWEET AND DEADLY!* The presence of sugar in processed foods has grown exponentially since 1900 – so has the diagnosis of MS Globally, sugar consumption has tripled in the past 50 years. But, it turns out, the greatest threat to human health is one type of sugar in particular: fructose. In the US, per-capita consumption of fructose, a common food additive there – mainly in the form of high-fructose corn syrup – has increased more than 100-fold since 1970. Processed foods lack key nutrients. 1tsp = fruits J.Physiol 2012 590:2485-2499 Gomez-Pinella see also Lustig / Yudkin © 25

  • 28. HERBAL PROTOCOLS THE BEST ANTI VIRALS ARE PLANTS MANY PLANTS HAVE ANTI INFLAMMATORY AND ANTI MICROBIAL PROPERTIES SOME PLANTS ARE SPECIFIC FOR MS AS THEY INHIBIT THE DEMYELINATING PROCESS SOME PLANTS ACTIVATE THE DENDRITIC IMMUNE CELLS OF OUR BODIES © 28
  • 29. PLANT MEDICINE The newest drug for MS is dimethyl fumarate Fumaric acid is found in all fresh fruits and vegetables With no side effects! It is also found in a plant called Fumitory and its traditional use is: An anti inflammatory ( first pathological pathway for MS ) Hepatic stimulant for torpid livers ( poor liver function due to diet ) Anti spasmodic ( relaxing muscles ) Mild laxative and diuretic ( both issues found clinically in MS ) © 29
  • 30. OTHER PLANTS There are a significant number of other plants which have been shown to inhibit and address the pathological pathways of MS – some of which you may be familiar with are: Turmeric, Green Tea, Withania BUT IN PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL DOSES ONLY IE NOT OTC PRODUCTS © 30
  • 31. TRUE PERSONALISED MEDICINE I treat every person according to their needs which means there is no one single protocol The medicine I use is not available over the counter Some of the plants I use can regulate the thyroid but not one single plant. Some Plants have been shown to inhibit the MS processes in the brain USE PLANTS! © 31
