One of the most powerful birds of prey, the Harpy Eagle is the largest eagle found in either of the Americas. The Iwokrama Forests is known to have more of the large, fruit eating birds such as parrots and cracids than any other forest and is the crown jewel for bird watching.
The Iwokrama Forest is also known for unique and lively mammals and offers a once in a lifetime experience where one can observe the captivating jaguar. Known for our Giant otter who enjoys life in a lake of fishes and the howler monkey whose golden appearance can be spotted in forest trees.
Home to the Reptiles, including the alert Black Caiman and the world’s largest pit viper- The BUSHMASTER who marks his territory. Iwokarama boast of its many species of fishes including the world’s largest freashwater fish- Arapaima.Don’t miss the opportunity of seeing some of the world’s most unique animals found in Iwokarama’s forest in Guyana.
The Iwokrama Forest is paradise for the naturalist looking to study the thousands of plants growing in this wonderland. There are over 1,500 plants (flora) identified.
See beautiful orchids, heliconia and bromeliads and a large number of rare species of plants not found anywhere else on earth, many of which are endangered.
You will be amazed to see the new species of tree called the Waramadan found only in the Iwokrama Forest. Also look for the poisonous Aromata tree, the Greenheart tree, as well as trees surrounded by a parasitic Ficus plant.
To help you get a better look at these plants is the Canopy Walkway. It is a series of suspension bridges and decks of up to 30 metres in height and 154 metres in length, located in the Iwokrama Forest. The Iwokrama Canopy Walkway allows access to the mid and upper canopy of the forest.
At these heights the micro-environment of the canopy is revealed as you walk amongst the tree-tops. The middle and upper canopy is home to many species that are never seen at ground level.
To add to your Iwokrama experience, you can climb the turtle mountain and indulge in the breathtaking views over the forest canopy. This pristine forest offers huge buttress trees and the endemic greenheart.
Experience the exhilarating climb up Surama Mountain in the cool morning air. This is the best time to observe bird life along the trail. Then take a three mile walk across the savannah and through the rainforest to the Burro Burro River where you can paddle on the Burro Burro River for opportunities to observe giant river otters, tapir, tira, spider monkeys and many more species
Then you can take a hike in the foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains on the Panorama Trail where you might see various magnificent birds in a variety of species.
At Iwokrama you can indulge in the opportunity to see jaguars in their natural environment
Take a 30 minute drive from the Iwokrama River Lodge to arrive at the waterfall trail. This trail is also excellent for bird viewing.
