STAIR COMPONENTS
DETAILS
The stairways components have some detailed construction rules on NFPA. Some main components
features are given below:
 Landings:
Stairs shall have landings at door openings. Stairs and immediate landings shall continue with no
decrease in width along the direction of egress travel. In new buildings, every landings shall have a
dimension measured in the direction of travel that is not less than the width of the stair.
STAIR COMPONENTS
DETAILS
The stairways components have some detailed construction rules on NFPA. Some main components
features are given below:
 Tread & Landing surfaces:
Stair treads & landing surfaces shall be solid, without perforations and free of projections that could trip
stair users. The requirement shall not apply to noncombustible grated stair treads and landings.
STAIR COMPONENTS
DETAILS
The stairways components have some detailed construction rules on NFPA. Some main components
features are given below:
 Tread slope:
Tread slopes shall not exceed ¼ in./ ft (2cm/m) ( a slope of 1 in 48 cm)
STAIR COMPONENTS
DETAILS
The stairways components have some detailed construction rules on NFPA. Some main components
features are given below:
 Riser height and Tread depth:
Riser height shall be measured as the vertical distance between tread nosing. Tread depth shall be
measured horizontally between the vertical planes of the foremost projections of adjacent treads and at a
right angle to the treads landing edge but shall not include beveled or rounded tread surfaces that slope
more than 20 degrees. ( a slope of 1 in 2.75). At tread nosing, such beveling or rounding shall not
exceed ½ in. in horizontal dimension.
