Answer and reply are the most common verbs used for speaking
or writing as a reaction to a question, letter etc.
I can’t easily give an answer to your question.
Have you had an answer to your letter?
I rang the bell, but there was no answer.
She only replied with a smile.
‘I won’t let you down,’ he replied confidently.
The senator replied that he was not in a position to comment.
‘Reply’ may be used as noun to give meaning an act of replying to
something or somebody.
I am writing in reply to your letter.
I asked her what her name was but she made no reply.

‘Respond’ is less common in use but it is more polite than ‘answer
and ‘reply’.
I asked him his name but he didn’t respond.
The car responds very well to the controls.
NOTE:
The verb 'answer' can be transitive as well as intransitive,
whereas 'respond' and 'reply' can only be intransitive. 'Respond'
can refer to contexts other than verbal, whereas 'answer' and
'reply' do not normally do so.
