BASIC RULES IN
SUBJECT-VERB
AGREEMENT:
Rule no. 1
a singular subject always goes with
singular verb ( is, am, was, and s form)
Examples:
•Coach Rhett is our P.E teacher.
•He teaches us football this quarter.

Examples:
• He is determined to get the award for
best oration.
• I am going to the library to borrow a
book.
• My father works in the farm.
• She always appears happy to me
• Germany was one of the first great
centers of news paper publishing.
Rule no. 2
 a plural subject always takes a plural
a plural verb ( are, were, and base form)
Examples:
•My classmates love P.E time.
•My seatmates are the members of my
team.

Examples:
• The planets revolve around the sun.
• The players are practicing in the gym .
• We were there when the accident
happened.
• The grade 5 students work hard to keep
their surroundings clean.
• All are welcome to the party.
RULE IN INVERTED
SENTENCES
1.Natural order
subject + verb
Examples:
•The obstacle course is at the park.
(singular verb)
•My running buddies are here. (plural
verb)

Examples:
• Reading is my favorite hobby.
• Everyone is encourage to study.
• My father reads news paper every
morning.
• The class are attending the seminar.
• The cat was surprised to see itself in the
mirror.
2. Inverted order
verb + subject
(here is, here are, there is, there are)
Example:
•At the park is the obstacle course. (singular
verb)
•Here are my running buddies. (plural verb)

Examples:
• On the branch there were two birds.
• Here is an artifact from the civil war.
• Into the room rushed a large black cat.
• Onto the stage danced the performers.
• Here is the science museum.
Example:
•Where is my P.E uniform?
•What are the stretching exercises in P.E?

 Most interrogative sentences or
questions are also in inverted order.
Examples:
• Who planted the trees?
• What is your plan for summer?
• Who wrote the book?.
• When was the book published?
• Where was the book published?
RULE IN INVERTING
PHRASES
In every sentence you must be able to
identify the simple subject. The subject
always agrees with the verb even when it
is a part of a prepositional phrase. The
verb does not agree with the object of the
preposition. Inverting phrases are words
that come after the simple subject. They
come in the form of prepositional
phrases.
Example:
•One key in building muscles is eating
protein-rich food. (singular verb)
•The muscles in our body grow bigger if
we exercise daily (plural verb)

Examples:
• The birds on top of the tree are singing.
• The boy at the door is my brother.
• The ideas in that book are interesting.
• The paintings in the gallery are so
expensive.
• The windows of the house need to be
repaired.
RULE IRREGULAR
NOUNS
Plural noun forms that are singular in
meaning use a singular verb.
Examples:
•Gymnastics is a sport that requires
great flexibility.
•Aerobics is a strenuous activity.

• Mathematics is my favorite subject.
• The news spreads rapidly.
• Mumps is contagious.
• Physics gives me a headache.
• Measles is dangerous for pregnant
woman .
Plural noun forms that are plural in
meaning use a plural verb.
Examples:
•Jogging pants are essential in P.E
classes.
•Light clothes are good for exercising.

Examples:
• Scissors are on the table.
• Her pants are very dirty.
• The pliers were given to people .
• The company’s earnings are increasing
every year.
• My shorts are in the laundry basket.
RULE FOR
COLLECTIVE NOUNS
Collective nouns can take a singular or
plural verb depending on the meaning
of the sentence.
Examples:
•The family enjoys jogging. (singular
verb)
•The Obispo family prefer different kinds
of exercise. (plural verb)

Examples:
• The class takes its first examination this
year. (singular)
• The class start their examination (plural).
• Every afternoon the team follows its couch
for practice. (singular)
• The team are cooperating well for the
contest. (plural)
Answers only.
Write the subject and select the correct inside the
parenthesis.
1. Meteors (is, are) not shooting stars.
2. He (visit, visits) his grandparents occasionally.
3. She (was, were) a vegetarian.
4. Athletics (is, are) good for young people.
5. The boy (had, have) ball in his hand.
6. (Is, Are) the tweezers in this drawer?
7. Your pants (is, are) at the cleaner's.
8. On top on the suitcase (is, are) my shoes.
9. At the end of the dusty road (stand, stands) two old water
pumps.
10. My scissors (are, is) on the table.
Answers only.
Write N if the sentence is in Natural order and
I if it is Inverted order.
1. The dog ran down the street.
2. Two English classes are scheduled for grade
5.
3. Down the street the dog ran.
4. At the back of the room a crash was heard.
5. Here is my contribution.

  • 15. In every sentence you must be able to identify the simple subject. The subject always agrees with the verb even when it is a part of a prepositional phrase. The verb does not agree with the object of the preposition. Inverting phrases are words that come after the simple subject. They come in the form of prepositional phrases.
