This slide set was created for a presentation to the Saint Joseph School District Board of Education. The last time I presented to the board on this program was in 2000 to ask for the blessing to proceed with a for-credit course in marine biology in our district.
After our tenth year was complete, it was obvious to me that I owed it to the board to show them what an amazing thing they helped to produce for the children of our city. Rarely do they get to see the direct fruits of their decisions in such a direct and purposeful way.
Unfortunately, much of the presentation was also done using a .pdf petition that featured our work... and led to the listing of two Caribbean coral species as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
Two former students (now PhD candidates) were also brought in via teleconference from Rhode Island and College Station, Texas.
Starting with slide #56, the presentation was designed to roll off automatically with a list of alternating images from our field studies and direct quotes from former students taken from past course evaluations.
These slides won't mean much without the presentation voiceover. I suppose I could come back on here and do a slidecast voiceover when I get a chance. Ok, I think I just talked myself into it.
Anyway... even if you don't get the full experience... I hope you at least enjoy the rich imagery of Andros Island in The Bahamas and its coral reefs in particular.
