According to British researchers, an information society is one where the creation, distribution, use, integration and manipulation of information is a significant part of the economy, politics and culture. The aim of an information society is to gain competitive advantage internationally through creative and productive use of information technology. The amount of information stored in the world grew exponentially from 1986 to 2007, as did the world's capacity to receive broadcast information, demonstrating the rapid growth of information in modern societies. However, the easy reproducibility of information in such societies also leads to challenges around controlling intellectual property.
