We hear God speak every time we open the Bible. Often times we are
convicted over some sin or sinful direction we are heading. When this
occurs, we do not have to seek further counsel. God’s voice is unmistakable.
I wish this was always the case. God’s Word is clear regarding knowing and
pleasing God, but sometimes direction in where to invest our time, efforts,
and resources must be spiritually discerned. We know what must be done,
but we struggle with how to proceed. Anyone who has been listening to my
sermons over the past several years can easily see the Lord has been dealing
with me in the area of disciple-making. I believe we have many committed
disciples in our church. They have greatly benefitted from the teachings of
the church, have learned to serve by serving alongside others, and have given
sacrificially to the work of the church because they believe in her mission.
While these things are true about many, I think we have done a poor job of
casting the vision for Biblical discipleship and a process for seeing it take
place. Consequently, I believe we have not consistently produced missional,
reproducing disciples. God has been revealing this to me and burdening me
for the ministry of disciple-making with increasing intensity over the past
couple of years. I have become so convicted that I believe setting any goal for
myself or our church lower than making authentic, Christ-following,
reproducing disciples would be disobedient to the call of Jesus Christ.
The Biblical mandate to make disciples in Matthew 28:18-20 does not fully
explain all of the intricacies of the disciple-making process, but the example
of our Lord Jesus makes several things clear.
1. Jesus saw the need to call out a small group to become disciples. He
ministered to the masses, but He invited a few to come and follow. These
were the ones that were to carry on His work.
2. He taught them the deep things of God. He interacted with them and
allowed them to ask questions. They were given insight about His person
and mission that others were not.
3. He allowed them to have a deep, close relationship with Him. They
lived with Him and observed Him. He was there for them and was the
ultimate example for them.
4. He let them participate in the ministry. The disciples preached,
healed, helped, brought people to Jesus, and had different responsibilities
within the group. Sometimes they succeeded and He rejoiced with them.
Sometimes it was necessary for Him to rebuke and correct them.
5. He trusted and released them to carry on (complete) the mission.
When I evaluated our present discipleship strategy in light of Jesus’ example,
I found two glaring weaknesses: expectation and accountability. You cannot
genuinely have one without the other. We hold up the standards of scripture
as our expectation, but do we consistently hold one another accountable
according to that standard? We know we are to be living sacrifices (Romans
12:1) but seldom confront attitudes of blatant selfishness. We know we are
to hide God’s Word in our hearts (Psalm 119:11) but we are unwilling to ask
each other in Sunday School to recite a memory verse. These are just two
simple examples.
Last year I sent a letter out to 28 young men in our church inviting them to
enter into a small group discipleship study with high expectations and high
accountability. I asked them to make a 6 month commitment to the study
and process. I knew the stresses of life would keep many of these men from
making this commitment, but eight made the commitment. They did their
work, memorized memory verses, and faithfully attended the group. It has
been amazing to see these guys grow and draw closer to the Lord. God has
also birthed a desire in them to fulfill the Great Commission by leading
others on the same effort. Seven of those men are praying the Lord would
use them to lead other groups. There is an open letter to our church on page
11 of the Bridge. Prayerfully consider whether the Lord might want you to
become part of one of these small groups, that the foundation may be laid
in your own life for becoming the authentic, Christ-following, reproducing
disciple the Lord would have you to be.

Senior Adult Day at FBC
Franklinton is Sunday, May 4th. I
hope you’re able to attend.
	 Then, on Monday, May 5th,
the Washington Baptist annual Spring
Senior Adult Revival services
begin at Hillcrest Baptist Church
with Dr. John Gibson. On Tuesday,
May 6th, at Enon Baptist Church, Dr.
Joe McKeever will be preaching. On
Thursday, May 8th, at Clifton Baptist
Church, Rev. Milton Klisch will be
our speaker. And finally, on Friday,
May 9th, here at FBC, Rev. Chris
Wheeler will be our preacher. Bro.
Phillip Willis of Baton Rouge will be
leading the music all four days.
Activities start at 9:00 A.M. as we
gather for fellowship, choir practice
at 9:30, and the service at 10. Why not
make plans to attend all four days?
	 The theme for this year’s
services is: “God bless
America - America bless God.” Our
theme verse is Proverbs 14:34,
“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is
a reproach to any people.”
	 In King Solomon’s dedication
prayer for the temple, he implored
God to hear the cries of His people
as they prayed toward the temple. In
2 Chronicles 6:22 Solomon said, “If
anyone sins against his neighbor, or if
Your people Israel are defeated before
an enemy because they have sinned,
or when the heavens are shut up and
there is no rain because they have
sinned, or when there is a famine
in the land, pestilence or blight or
mildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or
when they sin against You (for there
is no one who does not sin), and You
become angry with them and deliver
them to an enemy...,” the admonition
over and over is that if the offenders
will turn toward the temple and pray,
confess their sins, and again submit
to God, that He will deliver them and
restore them.
	 Then in 2 Chronicles chapter
7, we have God’s answer to Solomon.
In verses 14 and 15 God said, “If My
people who are called by My name
will humble themselves, and pray
and seek My face, and turn from their
wicked ways, then I will hear from
heaven, and will forgive their sin, and
heal their land. Now My eyes will be
open and My ears attentive to prayer
made in this place.”
	 Personally, I believe that God
still honors His word, and the
principles that applied to the ancient
Israelites still apply to us today.
Revival will come when God’s people
truly turn to Him.
We say we need revival in
America, and that’s very true. The
question is, do we really want it, or
are we just moving our lips? If you
haven’t been praying for revival, let
me encourage you to start right now.
Pray for lost family members and
neighbors. Pray for unity within the
body of Christ. Pray for your pastor
and his family. Pray for our
community. Pray for the police, the
military, the teachers and
administrators in the schools, the
students. Confess all of your known
sin. Ask God to search our hearts and
to bring to light that which displeases
Him. Refuse to give up. Refuse to
give in. Pray as if life itself depended
on it. And then watch in faith, and
expect God to move.
Let 2014 be the year of the
great revival. Let it be remembered
for what God has done.

May God bless your efforts,

I’m having a hard time believing that it is actually May. It seems like this year is flying
by. I guess it really is true that time flies when you are having fun. Speaking of fun, I’m super
excited about this summer … it’s going to be super-duper FUN. I know you find this hard to
believe, but occasionally I get picked on for using the word “super-duper.” Anyway, I’m excited
about this summer. Summer always gets me pumped up, but this summer is looking like it will
be the best one yet. One of the many things I’m excited about for this summer is our new Sunday
School material for the youth. Beginning the first Sunday in May, May 4th (which is also the
unofficial day to recognize all things Star Wars), we will begin a new Bible study entitled “True
Love Project: How the Gospel Defines Your Purity.”
The Bible study is a remake of an old Bible study entitled “True Love Waits:” “True
Love Project” is not simply another Bible study for students on the topic of sex and virginity. It
is a summons for this generation of students to understand their sexuality in light of the gospel.
When students realize how the gospel impacts their purity, their lives will be changed from the
inside out. Once students pursue Christ through their sexual purity, they will demonstrate to
the world around them that Jesus is the ultimate destination and desire of their hearts. “True
Love Project” is authored by Clayton King and his wife Sharie King. Clayton King was the main
speaker at Louisiana’s Youth Evangelism Celebration Conference, YEC, 2011 and 2012.
I’m super-duper pumped about this Bible study because it starts with the Gospel,
leading students to understand who they are in Christ and what it means to be a Christian
living for Christ. After understanding the gospel, this study will lead students to understand
that if they are Christians, Jesus is their Lord. Setting the foundation in the gospel and the
Lordship of Christ will hopefully result in the students taking the remainder of the study series
and looking at purity on a whole new level. So you can get a better idea of what this Bible study
is all about, here are the topics for each session:
Session One: God’s Story, Your Story
Session Two: The Cost of Ownership
Session Three: The Bible on Sex
		 Session Four: Your Heart Matters
		 Session Five: Purity From Within
		 Session Six: Our Final Destination
Session Seven: Hate it, Starve it, Outsmart it
Session Eight: Sex, God’s Glory, and Your Mission
The current culture of our youth is filled with the world’s view of sex. I wish this wasn’t
the case, but it is the world we live in. This study will give them the Biblical view of sex and
purity. Any parents that would like to help lead this study or would simply like to sit in on the
Bible study are more than welcome to do so. Pray for our students as we begin this study. Pray
for our Sunday School teachers as we lead students in understanding the Biblical view of sex and
purity.

The “Voices of LC” is a 12
member ensemble that serves
as a public relations group for
Louisiana College located in
Pineville, Louisiana. “Voices”
also serves as a worship team
for chapel services and other
events at the college.
Organized in the fall of 2007,
originally to sing one song for
a banquet, the group has
travelled extensively in
Louisiana and such states as
Arizona, Florida, Georgia,
Indiana, Kentucky,
Mississippi, Missouri, and
Tennessee. In the summer of
2008, the group was
privileged to sing at the
Southern Baptist Convention
in Indianapolis.
“Voices” was commissioned
by the Louisiana Baptist
Convention to create a
musical for a state-wide
initiative calling for prayer
and revival entitled “Awaken
2012.” The group recorded its
first cd Awaken in the studios
of Community Bible Church
in San Antonio, December of
2011.
Awaken was premiered at the
Louisiana Baptist Evangelism
Conference on January 24,
2012.
The group is made up of a
very diverse group of
majors including, Music,
Social Work, Education, and
Business. Dr. Fred Guilbert
(who is a friend and
fellow-graduate of LC with
Bro. Butch) is the director of
the group and comes from a
background of over 40 years
of ministry in church music.

I am so thrilled to be coming on board as the
new Director of Preschool/Children’s
Ministries! It has been a ministry close to my
heart for a long time, and I am so thankful to
have the opportunity to serve in this role!
While most of you know me through
PlaySchool, I would like to take this time to
introduce myself to those that may not know
me. I am married to Stephen McElveen, and
we live in the Stoney Point community. We
have two sons and one daughter--Mack, 16
and a sophomore at FHS; Gentry, 14 and a
7th grader at BGS; and Kennedy, 11 and a 5th
grader at FES. We joined FBC Franklinton in
September 2001. I have been the Director of
PlaySchool since August 2004. I am
originally from St. Bernard, LA and went to
LSU to pursue a degree in Elementary
Education. I completed my Bachelor’s
studies in 1996 and my Master’s in 2007 with
an emphasis on Early Childhood Learning.
I am a die-hard Tiger fan and love to watch
baseball.
I am so excited about some of the fun
opportunities that I will have this summer
to get to know your children better and to
help them grow in the grace and truth of our
Savior Jesus Christ! Also, if your child plays
organized sports, please get a schedule of
their games to me. I would love to come and
see them play! I would love to support them
inside the church as well as with their extra
curricular activities.
If you have any questions on ways you or your child
can be more involved in our Children’s Ministry,
please feel free to call me at 515-0884 or by email at

Long Range Planning Committee Report
Senior Recognition
Sunday is May 18th!
Mother’s Day Sunday
The Long Rang Planning committee has a
question for you. How effective is the Church
today relative to 30 years ago? Think about it
for a minute before you read on. How do you
judge “effectiveness”? Is it a look inside the
Church at our programs, or is it a look outside
the Church at our impact on the world? Surely
the answer includes some of both as we are
commanded to worship, fellowship, and
minister to one another while also we are called
to “go,” “make disciples,” and “be a witness” to
the world.
It is safe to assume that we can agree that we
do a great job internally, but what about our
impact on the world? Here are a few
Washington Parish statistics that bring home
the reality:
A) In 1980, 86% of residents claimed affiliation
with an Evangelical Protestant church, while
only 42% make the claim in 2010. Further, in
1980 virtually 100% of residents claimed
affiliation with some church, while in
2010 43% claim they have no church affiliation.
B) In 2013, 63% of births were to unwed
mothers.
C) In 2012, 24% of households were headed by
single parents.
This indicates there are great needs in our area
of Washington Parish.
The Long Range Planning committee is studying
the commandments given us in scripture to
determine how best to fulfill our God given
purpose to minister inside and outside the
Church. We will be including the Church body
in this discussion later this Summer.
Please be in prayer for the committee, our
church as a whole, and for yourself that the
Holy Spirit would give us a heart for His people
and lead us in better fulfilling his commands.

We are pleased to announce that these books

	 Accountability is one of the
most vital yet often most neglected
components of the growth of
disciples. As I look back over my
own spiritual development, the
greatest strides were made during
times of intense accountability.
These were times when I knew I
would be asked about how much
time I spent in prayer and Bible
study. I would be asked about my
progress in overcoming certain
persistent sins in my life, etc…
This level of accountability is not
possible through most Sunday
school classes. Most of our classes
are not gender specific and they
are open groups. Open groups are
those that welcome all who might
show up. This is a
wonderful thing, and Sunday
school offers a great entry-point
for discipleship and connection
to the local Body, but it is not the
in-depth discipleship many are
hungry to find. I want you to
prayerfully consider whether the
Lord might want you to go deeper.
	 If you think an intense
discipleship study that will force
you to go much deeper in your
walk with the Lord is something
the Lord is calling you to, I want
you to know exactly what you are
getting into and to be fully
committed. This small group
study will last 25 weeks. Here
are the expectations for the
attendants:
1. ATTEND:
Participants are expected to
attend the 1 to 1 1/2 hour weekly
meeting unless providentially
hindered.
2. DO THE WORK:
Each week there will be a lesson
that will have three components:
memory verse study, Bible study
with discussion questions, and a
reading with discussion questions.
This study will take approximately
1 ½ hours. This is to be completed
prior to the Bible Study each week.
3. SUBMIT TO
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Each person will have an
accountability partner. This
person will pray for you daily, call
you if you miss a meeting and
ask you why you were not there,
listen to you recite your memory
verse, and look at your book. The
accountability will grow beyond
these things, but this is where we
will start.
4. HAVE A DESIRE TO GROW
TO BE A MORE PLEASING
FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST!
There will be numerous time
options to choose from for
participants. We will set these
times once we can gauge the
numbers wanting to participate
and the availability of our leaders.
If this is something you are
interested in, please e-mail who
or sign up on the bulletin board
outside the Family Life Center. If
you have questions, I will be glad
to answer them. I will not be
following up on this letter. The
ball is now in your court.

  • 2. Paul Watts, Pastor fbc.paulwatts@gmail.com We hear God speak every time we open the Bible. Often times we are convicted over some sin or sinful direction we are heading. When this occurs, we do not have to seek further counsel. God’s voice is unmistakable. I wish this was always the case. God’s Word is clear regarding knowing and pleasing God, but sometimes direction in where to invest our time, efforts, and resources must be spiritually discerned. We know what must be done, but we struggle with how to proceed. Anyone who has been listening to my sermons over the past several years can easily see the Lord has been dealing with me in the area of disciple-making. I believe we have many committed disciples in our church. They have greatly benefitted from the teachings of the church, have learned to serve by serving alongside others, and have given sacrificially to the work of the church because they believe in her mission. While these things are true about many, I think we have done a poor job of casting the vision for Biblical discipleship and a process for seeing it take place. Consequently, I believe we have not consistently produced missional, reproducing disciples. God has been revealing this to me and burdening me for the ministry of disciple-making with increasing intensity over the past couple of years. I have become so convicted that I believe setting any goal for myself or our church lower than making authentic, Christ-following, reproducing disciples would be disobedient to the call of Jesus Christ. The Biblical mandate to make disciples in Matthew 28:18-20 does not fully explain all of the intricacies of the disciple-making process, but the example of our Lord Jesus makes several things clear. 1. Jesus saw the need to call out a small group to become disciples. He ministered to the masses, but He invited a few to come and follow. These were the ones that were to carry on His work. 2. He taught them the deep things of God. He interacted with them and allowed them to ask questions. They were given insight about His person and mission that others were not. 3. He allowed them to have a deep, close relationship with Him. They lived with Him and observed Him. He was there for them and was the ultimate example for them. 4. He let them participate in the ministry. The disciples preached, healed, helped, brought people to Jesus, and had different responsibilities within the group. Sometimes they succeeded and He rejoiced with them. Sometimes it was necessary for Him to rebuke and correct them. 5. He trusted and released them to carry on (complete) the mission. When I evaluated our present discipleship strategy in light of Jesus’ example, I found two glaring weaknesses: expectation and accountability. You cannot genuinely have one without the other. We hold up the standards of scripture as our expectation, but do we consistently hold one another accountable according to that standard? We know we are to be living sacrifices (Romans 12:1) but seldom confront attitudes of blatant selfishness. We know we are to hide God’s Word in our hearts (Psalm 119:11) but we are unwilling to ask each other in Sunday School to recite a memory verse. These are just two simple examples. Last year I sent a letter out to 28 young men in our church inviting them to enter into a small group discipleship study with high expectations and high accountability. I asked them to make a 6 month commitment to the study and process. I knew the stresses of life would keep many of these men from making this commitment, but eight made the commitment. They did their work, memorized memory verses, and faithfully attended the group. It has been amazing to see these guys grow and draw closer to the Lord. God has also birthed a desire in them to fulfill the Great Commission by leading others on the same effort. Seven of those men are praying the Lord would use them to lead other groups. There is an open letter to our church on page 11 of the Bridge. Prayerfully consider whether the Lord might want you to become part of one of these small groups, that the foundation may be laid in your own life for becoming the authentic, Christ-following, reproducing disciple the Lord would have you to be. • 3. Senior Adult Day at FBC Franklinton is Sunday, May 4th. I hope you’re able to attend. Then, on Monday, May 5th, the Washington Baptist annual Spring Senior Adult Revival services begin at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Dr. John Gibson. On Tuesday, May 6th, at Enon Baptist Church, Dr. Joe McKeever will be preaching. On Thursday, May 8th, at Clifton Baptist Church, Rev. Milton Klisch will be our speaker. And finally, on Friday, May 9th, here at FBC, Rev. Chris Wheeler will be our preacher. Bro. Phillip Willis of Baton Rouge will be leading the music all four days. Activities start at 9:00 A.M. as we gather for fellowship, choir practice at 9:30, and the service at 10. Why not make plans to attend all four days? The theme for this year’s services is: “God bless America - America bless God.” Our theme verse is Proverbs 14:34, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” In King Solomon’s dedication prayer for the temple, he implored God to hear the cries of His people as they prayed toward the temple. In 2 Chronicles 6:22 Solomon said, “If anyone sins against his neighbor, or if Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned, or when the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned, or when there is a famine in the land, pestilence or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or when they sin against You (for there is no one who does not sin), and You become angry with them and deliver them to an enemy...,” the admonition over and over is that if the offenders will turn toward the temple and pray, confess their sins, and again submit to God, that He will deliver them and restore them. Then in 2 Chronicles chapter 7, we have God’s answer to Solomon. In verses 14 and 15 God said, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.” Personally, I believe that God still honors His word, and the principles that applied to the ancient Israelites still apply to us today. Revival will come when God’s people truly turn to Him. We say we need revival in America, and that’s very true. The question is, do we really want it, or are we just moving our lips? If you haven’t been praying for revival, let me encourage you to start right now. Pray for lost family members and neighbors. Pray for unity within the body of Christ. Pray for your pastor and his family. Pray for our community. Pray for the police, the military, the teachers and administrators in the schools, the students. Confess all of your known sin. Ask God to search our hearts and to bring to light that which displeases Him. Refuse to give up. Refuse to give in. Pray as if life itself depended on it. And then watch in faith, and expect God to move. Let 2014 be the year of the great revival. Let it be remembered for what God has done. May God bless your efforts, Brother Dale Senior Adult Revival May 5th - Hillcrest Baptist May 6th - Enon Baptist May 8th - Clifton Baptist May 9th - First Baptist Morning Schedule 9:00 a.m. Fellowship 9:30 a.m. Choir Rehearsal 10:00 a.m. Worship Service Dale Parker, Minister to Senior Adults & Discipleship Training fbc.daleparker@gmail.com
  • 4. Cody Thomas, Student Pastor fbc.codythomas@gmail.com I’m having a hard time believing that it is actually May. It seems like this year is flying by. I guess it really is true that time flies when you are having fun. Speaking of fun, I’m super excited about this summer … it’s going to be super-duper FUN. I know you find this hard to believe, but occasionally I get picked on for using the word “super-duper.” Anyway, I’m excited about this summer. Summer always gets me pumped up, but this summer is looking like it will be the best one yet. One of the many things I’m excited about for this summer is our new Sunday School material for the youth. Beginning the first Sunday in May, May 4th (which is also the unofficial day to recognize all things Star Wars), we will begin a new Bible study entitled “True Love Project: How the Gospel Defines Your Purity.” The Bible study is a remake of an old Bible study entitled “True Love Waits:” “True Love Project” is not simply another Bible study for students on the topic of sex and virginity. It is a summons for this generation of students to understand their sexuality in light of the gospel. When students realize how the gospel impacts their purity, their lives will be changed from the inside out. Once students pursue Christ through their sexual purity, they will demonstrate to the world around them that Jesus is the ultimate destination and desire of their hearts. “True Love Project” is authored by Clayton King and his wife Sharie King. Clayton King was the main speaker at Louisiana’s Youth Evangelism Celebration Conference, YEC, 2011 and 2012. I’m super-duper pumped about this Bible study because it starts with the Gospel, leading students to understand who they are in Christ and what it means to be a Christian living for Christ. After understanding the gospel, this study will lead students to understand that if they are Christians, Jesus is their Lord. Setting the foundation in the gospel and the Lordship of Christ will hopefully result in the students taking the remainder of the study series and looking at purity on a whole new level. So you can get a better idea of what this Bible study is all about, here are the topics for each session: Session One: God’s Story, Your Story Session Two: The Cost of Ownership Session Three: The Bible on Sex Session Four: Your Heart Matters Session Five: Purity From Within Session Six: Our Final Destination Session Seven: Hate it, Starve it, Outsmart it Session Eight: Sex, God’s Glory, and Your Mission The current culture of our youth is filled with the world’s view of sex. I wish this wasn’t the case, but it is the world we live in. This study will give them the Biblical view of sex and purity. Any parents that would like to help lead this study or would simply like to sit in on the Bible study are more than welcome to do so. Pray for our students as we begin this study. Pray for our Sunday School teachers as we lead students in understanding the Biblical view of sex and purity. The “Voices of LC” is a 12 member ensemble that serves as a public relations group for Louisiana College located in Pineville, Louisiana. “Voices” also serves as a worship team for chapel services and other events at the college. Organized in the fall of 2007, originally to sing one song for a banquet, the group has travelled extensively in Louisiana and such states as Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. In the summer of 2008, the group was privileged to sing at the Southern Baptist Convention in Indianapolis. “Voices” was commissioned by the Louisiana Baptist Convention to create a musical for a state-wide initiative calling for prayer and revival entitled “Awaken 2012.” The group recorded its first cd Awaken in the studios of Community Bible Church in San Antonio, December of 2011. Awaken was premiered at the Louisiana Baptist Evangelism Conference on January 24, 2012. The group is made up of a very diverse group of majors including, Music, Social Work, Education, and Business. Announcements Long Range Planning Committee Report Senior Recognition Sunday is May 18th! Mother’s Day Sunday The Long Rang Planning committee has a question for you. How effective is the Church today relative to 30 years ago? Think about it for a minute before you read on. How do you judge “effectiveness”? Is it a look inside the Church at our programs, or is it a look outside the Church at our impact on the world? Surely the answer includes some of both as we are commanded to worship, fellowship, and minister to one another while also we are called to “go,” “make disciples,” and “be a witness” to the world. It is safe to assume that we can agree that we do a great job internally, but what about our impact on the world? Here are a few Washington Parish statistics that bring home the reality: A) In 1980, 86% of residents claimed affiliation with an Evangelical Protestant church, while only 42% make the claim in 2010. Further, in 1980 virtually 100% of residents claimed affiliation with some church, while in 2010 43% claim they have no church affiliation. B) In 2013, 63% of births were to unwed mothers. C) In 2012, 24% of households were headed by single parents. This indicates there are great needs in our area of Washington Parish. The Long Range Planning committee is studying the commandments given us in scripture to determine how best to fulfill our God given purpose to minister inside and outside the Church. We will be including the Church body in this discussion later this Summer. Please be in prayer for the committee, our church as a whole, and for yourself that the Holy Spirit would give us a heart for His people and lead us in better fulfilling his commands. High School Senior Recognition Day at First Baptist Church is scheduled for Sunday, May 18th. In order for us to complete plans for this special day, there are several things to be aware of for those involved. Accountability is one of the most vital yet often most neglected components of the growth of disciples. As I look back over my own spiritual development, the greatest strides were made during times of intense accountability. These were times when I knew I would be asked about how much time I spent in prayer and Bible study. I would be asked about my progress in overcoming certain persistent sins in my life, etc… This level of accountability is not possible through most Sunday school classes. Most of our classes are not gender specific and they are open groups. Open groups are those that welcome all who might show up. This is a wonderful thing, and Sunday school offers a great entry-point for discipleship and connection to the local Body, but it is not the in-depth discipleship many are hungry to find. I want you to prayerfully consider whether the Lord might want you to go deeper. If you think an intense discipleship study that will force you to go much deeper in your walk with the Lord is something the Lord is calling you to, I want you to know exactly what you are getting into and to be fully committed. This small group study will last 25 weeks. Here are the expectations for the attendants: 1. ATTEND: Participants are expected to attend the 1 to 1 1/2 hour weekly meeting unless providentially hindered. 2. DO THE WORK: Each week there will be a lesson that will have three components: memory verse study, Bible study with discussion questions, and a reading with discussion questions. This study will take approximately 1 ½ hours. This is to be completed prior to the Bible Study each week. 3. SUBMIT TO ACCOUNTABILITY: Each person will have an accountability partner. This person will pray for you daily, call you if you miss a meeting and ask you why you were not there, listen to you recite your memory verse, and look at your book. The accountability will grow beyond these things, but this is where we will start. 4. HAVE A DESIRE TO GROW TO BE A MORE PLEASING FOLLOWER OF JESUS CHRIST! There will be numerous time options to choose from for participants. We will set these times once we can gauge the numbers wanting to participate and the availability of our leaders. If this is something you are interested in, please e-mail who or sign up on the bulletin board outside the Family Life Center. If you have questions, I will be glad to answer them. I will not be following up on this letter. The ball is now in your court. Brother Paul An Open Letter to All FBC Members
