Paranoid Personality Disorder
• Definition —
• Personality disorder in which a person has a long-term pattern of distrust and suspicion of
others
• Symptoms —
• Distrust or suspicion of others
• Hesitation to confide in others
• Angry or hostile reactions to slights or insults
• Tendency to hold grudges
Schizoid Personality Disorder
• Definition —
• A pattern of life-long indifference to others and social isolation
• Symptoms—
• Lack of interest in social or personal relationships
• Limited range of emotional expressions
• Difficulty deriving pleasure
• Appearance of being cold or empty to others
Schizotypal Personality Disorder
• Definition—
• Personality disorder in which a person has trouble with relationships and disturbances in
thought patterns, appearance, and behavior.
• Symptoms—
• Odd dress, thinking, beliefs, speech, or behavior
• Hearing a soft voice calling names
• “Magical thinking”—thinking that own thoughts can control other’s behaviors
• Belief that there are hidden messages or meanings meant just for you
Antisocial Personality Disorder
• Definition—
• Personality disorder in which a person has a long-term pattern of manipulating, exploiting, or violating
the rights of others.This behavior is often criminal.
• Symptoms—
• Disregard for others’ needs or feelings
• Persistent lying, stealing, and manipulation of others
• Aggressive, often violent behavior
• Troubles with the law
• Disregard for the safety of self or others.
Borderline Personality Disorder
• Definition—
• Personality disorder in which a person has long-term patterns of unstable or turbulent emotions,
behaviors or beliefs.
• Symptoms—
• Impulsive or risky behavior (unsafe sex, gambling, binge eating)
• Unstable self-image
• Suicidal behavior or self-injury
• Intense fear of being alone or abandoned/feelings of emptiness
• Unstable and intense relationships
Histrionic Personality Disorder
• Definition—
• Personality disorder in which people act in a very emotional and dramatic way that draws attention to
themselves.
• Symptoms—
• Constantly seeking attention
• Excessively emotional, dramatic, or provocative to draw attention
• Easily influenced by others
• Shallow, rapidly changing emotions
• Excessive concern with physical appearance
Narcissistic Personality Disorder
• Definition—
• Personality disorder in which people have an excessive sense of self-importance, an extreme
preoccupation with themselves, and a lack of empathy for others.
• Symptoms
• Inflated sense of self or importance
• Fantasies about power, wealth, and attractiveness
• Failure to recognize others’ needs or feelings
• Expectation of constant praise or admiration
• Envy of others or belief that others envy you
Avoidant Personality Disorder
• Definition—
• Personality disorder in which a person has a lifelong pattern of feeling very shy, inadequate,
and sensitive to rejection.
• Symptoms—
• Very sensitive to criticism or rejection
• Feelings of inadequacy, inferiority, or ugliness
• Extreme shyness
• Avoidance of new activities or meeting strangers
Dependent Personality Disorder
• Definition—
• Personality disorder in which people depend too much on others to meet their emotional and physical
needs.
• Symptoms—
• Excessive dependence on others and need to be taken care of
• Submissive or clingy behavior
• Difficulty starting or doing projects on own
• Tolerance of poor or abusive treatment
• Urgent need to start a new relationship after an old one has ended
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder
• Definition—
• Personality disorder in which a person is preoccupied with rules, orderliness, and control. Different
from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, an anxiety disorder.
• Symptoms—
• Preoccupation with details, orderliness, and rules
• Extreme perfectionism
• Desire to be in control
• Inability to throw away broken or useless objects (hoarding)
• Rigid and stubborn
