What is a Mineral?
 Mineral is defined as a “homogenous, naturally
occurring substance with a definable internal
structure.”
 Minerals are found in varied forms in nature, ranging
from the hardest diamond to the softest talc.
 Rocks are combinations of homogeneous substances
called minerals.

IMPORTANCE OF MINERALS
1. Various metals are extracted from these minerals after proper
refinement.
2. Minerals are an indispensable part of our lives.
3. The railway lines and the tarmac(paving) from building or a
big ship all are tarmacs of the roads.
4. Even the food that we eat contains minerals.
5. Minerals are found in varied forms in nature ranging from the
hardest diamond to the softest talc.
6. Rock are combinations of homogeneous substances called
minerals.
7. Over 2000 minerals have been identified only a few are
abundantly found in most of the rocks.
8. Geologists use these properties to classify the minerals.

Mode of Occurrence Of Minerals
 Minerals are usually found in “ores”. The term ore is
used to describe an accumulation of any minerals
mixed with other elements.
 This also determines the cost of understanding the
main types of formations in which the main types of
formations in which occur.
 (i) In igneous and metamorphic rocks minerals may
occur in the cracks crevices faults or join the smaller
occurrences are called Veins and the larger are called
Lodes.
 (ii) In sedimentary rocks a number of minerals occur in
beds or layers They have been formed as a result of
deposition accumulation and concentration in
horizontal strata.

 (iii) Another mode of formation involves the
decomposition of surface rocks and the removal of
soluble constituents leaving a residual mass of
weathered material containing ores.
 (iv) Certain minerals may occur as alluvial deposits in
sands of valley floors and the base of hills.
 (v) The ocean waters contain vast quantities of
minerals to be of economic signification Common salt,
Magnesium and water. The ocean beds, too are rich
manganese nodules.

Classification of Minerals
Ferrous MineralsFerrous minerals account for about three-fourths of the total value of the
production of metallic minerals.
Iron Ore
 Iron ore is the basic minerals and the backbone of industrial
development
 The finest iron ore with a very high content of iron up to 70
percent.
 In the adjoining Singbhum districts of Jharkhand, haematite iron
ore is mined in GUA and Noamundi.
 Durg – Bastar – Chandrapur belt lies in Chhattisgarh and
Maharashtra. Very high-grade hematites are found in the Bastar
district of Chattisgarh.
 The Kudremukh mines located on the western ghats of Karnataka
deposits are known to be one of the largest in the world
 Maharashtra – Goa belt includes the state of Goa and Ratnagiri
district of Maharashtra.
 Iron ore is exported through
Marmagoa port.
Manganese
 It is mainly used in the manufacturing of steel and
ferro-manganese alloy.
 Nearly 10 kg of manganese is required to
manufacture 1 tonne of steel.
 It is also used in manufacturing bleaching powder,
insecticides and paints.
Non-Ferrous Minerals
 Non-ferrous minerals include copper, bauxite,
lead, zinc and gold. These minerals play a vital
role in a number of metallurgical, engineering
and electrical industries.
Copper
 Malleable, ductile and good conductor of heat
and electricity.
 Mainly used in electrical cables, electronics and
chemical industries.
 The Balaghat mines in Madhya Pradesh, Khetri
mines in Rajasthan and Singhbhum district of
Jharkhand are leading producers of copper.
Copper ore
Bauxite
 Several ores contain aluminum it is formed bauxite a
clay – like substance that alumina and later aluminum
is obtained.
 Bauxite deposits are formed by the decomposition of
a wide variety of rocks rich in aluminum silicates.
 India’s bauxite deposit is mainly found in the
Amarkantak plateau.
 Orissa is the largest bauxite producing state in India
with 34.97 per cent of the country’s total production
in 2000 – 01.
Non – Metallic Minerals
Mica
 Mica is a mineral made up of a series of plates or
leaves. It splits easily into thin sheets.
 Mica can be clear, black, green, red yellow or
brown.
 Mica is one of the most indispensable minerals
used in electric and electrons industries.
 Mica deposits are found in the northern edge of
the Chota Nagpur Plateau, Koderma Gaya –
Hazaribagh belt of Jharkhand is the leading
producer.
 In Rajasthan, the major mica
producing area is around Ajmer.
Rock Minerals
Limestone
 Limestone is found in rocks composed of calcium
carbonates or calcium and magnesium carbonates.
 It is the basic raw material for the cement industry
and essential for smelting iron ore in the blast
furnace.
Conservation Of Minerals
 Minerals are a non-renewable resource. It takes
thousands of years for the formation and
concentration of minerals.
 Continued extraction of ores leads to the depletion
of minerals.
 So, it’s important to take the necessary steps so
that mineral resources can be used in a planned and
sustainable manner.
Energy Resources
 Energy resources can be classified as
 Conventional Sources: It includes firewood, cattle
dung cake, coal, petroleum, natural gas and
electricity.
 Non-Conventional Sources: It includes solar,
wind, tidal, geothermal, biogas and atomic energy

I. The sources of energy which have
been in use for a long time, e.g., coal,
petroleum, natural gas and water
power.
I. The resources which are yet in the
process of development over the
past few years. It includes solar,
wind, tidal, biogas, and biomass,
geothermal.
II. They are exhaust able except
water.
II. They are inexhaustible.
III. They cause pollution when used,
as they emit smoke and ash
III. They are generally pollution free.
IV. They are very expensive to be
maintained, stored and transmitted as
they are carried over long distance
through transmission grid and lines.
IV. Less expensive due to local use
and easy to maintain.

Conventional Sources of
Energy
Coal
 It is the most abundantly available fossil fuel.
 It is used for power generation, to supply energy to
the industry as well as for domestic needs.
 Lignite is a low grade brown coal, which is soft
with high moisture content.
 Coal that has been buried deep and subjected to
increased temperatures is bituminous coal.
 Anthracite is the highest quality of hard coal.
 Jharia, Raniganj, Bokaro are important coalfields.

 In India coal occurs in rock series of two main
geological ages
 1. Gondwana a little over 200 million years in age.
 2. Tertiary deposits which are only about 55
million years old.

Petroleum
 It provides fuel for heat and lighting, lubricants for
machinery and raw materials for a number of
manufacturing industries.
 Petroleum refineries act as a “nodal industry” for
synthetic textile, fertiliser and numerous chemical
industries.
 Mumbai High, Gujarat and Assam are major
petroleum production
areas in India.

Natural Gas
 Natural gas is an important clean energy resource.
It is considered an environment-friendly fuel.
 The power and fertilizer industries are the key users
of natural gas.
 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG ) is used in
vehicles to replace liquid fuels.
 Large reserves of natural gas have been discovered
in the Krishna-Godavari basin.
Electricity
 Electricity is generated mainly in 2 ways:
 By running water which drives hydro turbines to
generate Hydro Electricity. It is a renewable resource
of energy. India has a number of multi-purpose
projects like the Bhakra Nangal, Damodar Valley
Corporation, the Kopili Hydel Project.

Thermal Power
 By burning other fuels such as coal, petroleum and
natural gas to drive turbines to produce Thermal
Power. It uses non-renewable fossil fuels for
generating electricity.

Non-Conventional Sources of Energy
Nuclear or Atomic Energy
 Nuclear Energy is obtained by altering the structure
of atoms.
 Uranium and Thorium are used for generating
atomic or nuclear power.

Solar Energy
 Solar energy is produced by the Sun’s light.
 Photovoltaic technology converts sunlight directly
into electricity.

Wind Power
 Wind Energy or Power is the use of wind to
generate electricity.
 Wind turbines are used for this purpose.
 The largest wind farm cluster is located in Tamil
Nadu from Nagarcoil to Madurai.

Biogas
 Shrubs, farm waste, animal and human waste are
used to produce biogas for domestic consumption
in rural areas.
 The plant using cattle dung are known as ‘Gobar
gas plant’ in rural India.

Tidal Energy
 Tidal energy is the form of hydropower that
converts the energy obtained from tides into useful
forms of power, mainly electricity.
 In India, the Gulf of Khambhat, the Gulf of
Kachchh in Gujarat on the western coast and
Gangetic delta in Sunderban regions of West
Bengal provide ideal conditions for utilising tidal
energy.

Geo-Thermal Energy
 When heat and electricity are produced by using
the heat from the interior of the earth, it is known
as Geo-Thermal Energy.
 In India, geothermal energy is harnessed from
Parvati valley near Manikarn in Himachal Pradesh
and from Puga Valley, Ladakh.
Conservation of Energy Resources
 Every sector of the national economy – agriculture,
industry, transport, commercial and domestic – needs
inputs of energy. There is an urgent need to develop a
sustainable path for energy development. Here are some
ways that each one of us can contribute to save energy
resources:
 Using public transport systems instead of individual
vehicles
 Switching off electricity when not in use
 Using power-saving devices.
 Using non-conventional sources of energy

What is a Mineral?  Mineral is defined as a “homogenous, naturally occurring substance with a definable internal structure.”  Minerals are found in varied forms in nature, ranging from the hardest diamond to the softest talc.  Rocks are combinations of homogeneous substances called minerals.   • 4. IMPORTANCE OF MINERALS 1. Various metals are extracted from these minerals after proper refinement. 2. Minerals are an indispensable part of our lives. 3. The railway lines and the tarmac(paving) from building or a big ship all are tarmacs of the roads. 4. Even the food that we eat contains minerals. 5. Minerals are found in varied forms in nature ranging from the hardest diamond to the softest talc. 6. Rock are combinations of homogeneous substances called minerals. 7. Over 2000 minerals have been identified only a few are abundantly found in most of the rocks. 8. Geologists use these properties to classify the minerals. Navya Rai
  • 5. STUDY OF MINERALS . GEOGRAPHER: They study minerals as part of the earth’s crust for understanding of landform. •Their interest associated with economic activities. Geologists: interested in formation of minerals, their age and physical and chemical composition. Navya Rai
  • 6. Mode of Occurrence Of Minerals  Minerals are usually found in “ores”. The term ore is used to describe an accumulation of any minerals mixed with other elements.  This also determines the cost of understanding the main types of formations in which the main types of formations in which occur.  (i) In igneous and metamorphic rocks minerals may occur in the cracks crevices faults or join the smaller occurrences are called Veins and the larger are called Lodes.  (ii) In sedimentary rocks a number of minerals occur in beds or layers They have been formed as a result of deposition accumulation and concentration in horizontal strata. CONTI…  (iii) Another mode of formation involves the decomposition of surface rocks and the removal of soluble constituents leaving a residual mass of weathered material containing ores.  (iv) Certain minerals may occur as alluvial deposits in sands of valley floors and the base of hills.  (v) The ocean waters contain vast quantities of minerals to be of economic signification Common salt, Magnesium and water.   • 9. Ferrous MineralsFerrous minerals account for about three-fourths of the total value of the production of metallic minerals. Iron Ore  Iron ore is the basic minerals and the backbone of industrial development  The finest iron ore with a very high content of iron up to 70 percent.  In the adjoining Singbhum districts of Jharkhand, haematite iron ore is mined in GUA and Noamundi.  Durg – Bastar – Chandrapur belt lies in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. Very high-grade hematites are found in the Bastar district of Chattisgarh.  The Kudremukh mines located on the western ghats of Karnataka deposits are known to be one of the largest in the world  Maharashtra – Goa belt includes the state of Goa and Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.  Iron ore is exported through Marmagoa port.
  • 10. Manganese  It is mainly used in the manufacturing of steel and ferro-manganese alloy.  Nearly 10 kg of manganese is required to manufacture 1 tonne of steel.  It is also used in manufacturing bleaching powder, insecticides and paints.
  • 11. Non-Ferrous Minerals  Non-ferrous minerals include copper, bauxite, lead, zinc and gold. These minerals play a vital role in a number of metallurgical, engineering and electrical industries. Copper  Malleable, ductile and good conductor of heat and electricity.  Mainly used in electrical cables, electronics and chemical industries.  The Balaghat mines in Madhya Pradesh, Khetri mines in Rajasthan and Singhbhum district of Jharkhand are leading producers of copper.   • 12. Bauxite  Several ores contain aluminum it is formed bauxite a clay – like substance that alumina and later aluminum is obtained.  Bauxite deposits are formed by the decomposition of a wide variety of rocks rich in aluminum silicates.  India’s bauxite deposit is mainly found in the Amarkantak plateau.  Orissa is the largest bauxite producing state in India with 34.97 per cent of the country’s total production in 2000 – 01.
  • 13. Non – Metallic Minerals Mica  Mica is a mineral made up of a series of plates or leaves. It splits easily into thin sheets.  Mica can be clear, black, green, red yellow or brown.  Mica is one of the most indispensable minerals used in electric and electrons industries.  Mica deposits are found in the northern edge of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, Koderma Gaya – Hazaribagh belt of Jharkhand is the leading producer.  In Rajasthan, the major mica producing area is around Ajmer.
  • 14. Rock Minerals Limestone  Limestone is found in rocks composed of calcium carbonates or calcium and magnesium carbonates.  It is the basic raw material for the cement industry and essential for smelting iron ore in the blast furnace.
  • 15. Conservation Of Minerals  Minerals are a non-renewable resource. It takes thousands of years for the formation and concentration of minerals.  Continued extraction of ores leads to the depletion of minerals.  So, it’s important to take the necessary steps so that mineral resources can be used in a planned and sustainable manner.
  • 16. Energy Resources  Energy resources can be classified as  Conventional Sources: It includes firewood, cattle dung cake, coal, petroleum, natural gas and electricity.  Non-Conventional Sources: It includes solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, biogas and atomic energy
  • 17. Difference between Conventional and Non- Conventional Sources of Energy Conventional Sources of Energy Non-Conventional Sources of Energy I. The sources of energy which have been in use for a long time, e.g., coal, petroleum, natural gas and water power. I. The resources which are yet in the process of development over the past few years. It includes solar, wind, tidal, biogas, and biomass, geothermal. II. They are exhaust able except water. II. They are inexhaustible. III. They cause pollution when used, as they emit smoke and ash III. They are generally pollution free. IV. They are very expensive to be maintained, stored and transmitted as they are carried over long distance through transmission grid and lines. IV. Less expensive due to local use and easy to maintain.   • 18. Conventional Sources of Energy Coal  It is the most abundantly available fossil fuel.  It is used for power generation, to supply energy to the industry as well as for domestic needs.  Lignite is a low grade brown coal, which is soft with high moisture content.  Coal that has been buried deep and subjected to increased temperatures is bituminous coal.  Anthracite is the highest quality of hard coal.  Jharia, Raniganj, Bokaro are important coalfields.
  • 19. Conti….  In India coal occurs in rock series of two main geological ages  1. Gondwana a little over 200 million years in age.  2. Tertiary deposits which are only about 55 million years old. Navya Rai

Petroleum  It provides fuel for heat and lighting, lubricants for machinery and raw materials for a number of manufacturing industries.  Petroleum refineries act as a “nodal industry” for synthetic textile, fertiliser and numerous chemical industries.  Mumbai High, Gujarat and Assam are major petroleum production areas in India.   • 21. Natural Gas  Natural gas is an important clean energy resource. It is considered an environment-friendly fuel.  The power and fertilizer industries are the key users of natural gas.  Compressed Natural Gas (CNG ) is used in vehicles to replace liquid fuels.  Large reserves of natural gas have been discovered in the Krishna-Godavari basin.
