The distinctive features of the novel influence how the ideas within "The Boy in the Striped
Pyjamas" by John Boyne affect the reader. The distinctive features of the point of view of a young
boy, World War II and Nazis and anti
–Semitism setting, help communicate to the reader Boyne's
ideas. The ideas most apparent us are: that humankind is truly good and we're best characterized by
our intelligence, imagination and ability to feel for others, that experiences can end an innocent
viewpoint and that social conditioning can regulate and rationalize segregation, oppression, even
genocide. These distinctive features presented on their own are interesting but when they're paired
with the great ideas of this novel they become impactful. Our ideas...show more content...
This is because young people wouldn't understand the horrors which allows Boyne to use this
distinctive feature to properly show us that at its core humankind is essentially good, when awful
things continually happen throughout the novel. We see this the strongest in the chapter eleven's
title "The Fury" which is Bruno's naive way of saying "The FГјhrer". This communicates to us using
Bruno's intelligent and imaginative point of view of the type of man the "The FГјhrer" is, by
suggesting he's furious. This shows how the distinctive feature of the nine–year–old point of view
helps advance Boyne's ideas. You can also see this in chapter twelve, when the two boys are
comparing symbols. The quote "I don't know which one I prefer" from Bruno. This shows to us that
from a naive nine–year–old's point of view these symbols; which represent segregation, mean
nothing to him. Using Bruno's point of view we see that he's essentially good. The distinctive feature
a nine–year–old's point of view magnifies some of the biggest ideas within the

In my book The Boy In Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, the main character Bruno is a strong
willed boy sees his life during WWII through oblivious, suspicious eyes. As the story begins,
Bruno moves to a new house at Auschwitz but he thinks it is "Out With." At First Bruno hates it
at "out with" and he becomes suspicious of the fence between him and the people on the other
side. At the very beginning of the book Bruno and his sister Gretel look out his window and
Bruno says "look over there' Gretel follows the direction of the finger he was pointing and saw a
group of children emerging from a hut." Bruno doesn't like not knowing what was out there so the
next day Bruno and Gretel went back to the window. "Bruno and Gretel could see hundreds of
people, but there were so many huts before them, and the camp spread out so much further than they
could possibly see." Later in the book Bruno wanted to see how much further the fence went so he
went exploring. As bruno was wondering...show more content...

want to accept it!' " Bruno knows that he might not be going home but yet he still has to argue
about it and it got him in trouble. A little while later Bruno and his sister are at an important dinner

Fences are an expression of separation, an expression that no one should face. They separate
benevolent from evil, friendly and cruel. They are not meant to separate Jews and others. In the book
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne, the setting, characters, plot and theme are chilling
and exciting in this Holocaust novel.
The setting of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is during the Holocaust, in 1945. Bruno–the
protagonist– and his family live in a nazi house. Bruno's father is a Nazi officer, so they live near
the concentration camp, Auschwitz. Bruno hates living there, and misses his three "best friends for
life," until he discovers a new friend, Shmuel. Before, Bruno's family lived in a house with dozens
of places to explore. Now, they live in a three–story, shoddy house....show more content...
Bruno is a nine–year–old boy, and he has a small frame. His height is "the one thing that bothers
him." Bruno does not generally understand the seriousness of Shmuel's and his situation, which leads
to his naГЇve attitude. "The people I see from my window. They're all dressed the same."(p.
?)Bruno does not understand that the people are Jews, and the outfits are not pajamas. They are

confused as to why the others got to wear pajamas every day. Why couldn't he?" If Bruno knew
what was going on, he would not be jealous of the Jews. Bruno changes from disbelieving Shmuel
about the condition of the Jews, to believing him when he enters the camp. "He didn't really believe
that eleven people could live in the same room together." Bruno thought Shmuel was in the same
boat as he was, not in trouble, but exaggerating a little. "Instead, there were crowds of people sitting
together in groups, staring at the ground, looking horribly sad. Bruno finally understands that

It is through our experiences and context that we shape the way we perceive the world. However, it
is through texts that writers are able to challenge and at times destabilise these perception's, to
convey their ideas and values. Both, Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Rose Blanche have been
written to show the audience something about the impact of an individual's context, using the
Holocaust as a backdrop. Each text has a purpose and has been written to meet that purpose. Boyne
uses the characterisation of the main protagonist Bruno, a nine year old boy, to create a perception of
his experiences at the time of the Holocaust, showing the naivety in how he perceived the world. It's
through this technique that he is able to destabilise our perception of experiences, utilising Bruno's
willingness to make friends with Shmuel; thus disregarding the Germans prejudice against the Jews.'
This experience demonstrates the importance of friendship to Bruno. 'He had been told on countless

The boy in striped pyjamas The Boy in Striped Pyjamas written by John Boyne suggest about the
importance of friendship in difficult times is very important. 1.John Boyne suggested the importance
of friendship is talking about when Bruno is lonely in Out–With and is in a very bad mood then he
found Shmuel and he was happy so it leads to the importance of friendship in lonely difficult times.
2.Boyne suggested the importance of friendship which is referring to Bruno and Shmuel are coming
from completely different countries, even though the Germans and the Jewish people are supposed
to be enemies, but Shmuel and Bruno became really good friends so this leads to the importance of
friendship in difficult times. 3.The author suggest the importance of friendship in difficult times is

He was very passionate about this topic; so he wanted to inform us about the Holocaust.
Describe the relationship between Bruno and Gretel? (15 pts.) They didn't have the greatest
relationship in the world, but then again no siblings do. All siblings fight or argue, but Bruno and
Gretel did this a lot. Gretel thought she was so mature and that she was the boss of him and
everything he did. She could be very rude and mean at some points, but Bruno isn't the perfect little
angel either. Bruno could start fights too. Like when Gretel liked Lieutenant Kotler, Bruno didn't
really like him so he would pick fights about him and stuff they would disagree on. Or she would
think he would need to be more mature and not read as many adventure books and instead more
factual books. Yet again like all siblings, they did have their connecting moments and could be kind

Reflection Of The Boy In The Striped Pajamas
Throughout the story of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, there is a glimpse of life during World
War II that is shown through the eyes of a young boy, Bruno, who was shielded from the actuality
of the war, and his personal development as he grows mentally and begins to learn who the people
are on the other side of the fence.
The story of Bruno and his family takes place in their new home, after unexpectedly having to move
from their home in Berlin. Bruno's father receives a promotion and is now the commandment of the
Out–With concentration camp and the family's new home is next to the gruesome camp. Because
of his houses location, mean soldiers would often come in and out of his house without warning.
From his bedroom window, he can see a long barbwire fence. On the other side of this fence, there
was many people in striped pajamas, some marching in lines led by soldiers and some falling and
never getting up. This scene left young Bruno with many questions and not enough answers. One
morning, Bruno's love for adventure is greater than his fear of discipline and he steps outside and
follows the long fence, unaware of what it would lead to.
After walking for what seems like hours, Bruno comes across a young boy in striped pajamas sitting
on the other side of the fence. Bruno sits across from him and both the boys formally introduce
themselves. The young boy's name is Shmuel. Little did Bruno know this conversation would be the
beginning of a good friendship. The boys hit it

Fredrick Nietzsche, a renowned German philosopher, believed that one of the strongest
governing drives that humans possess, is their desire for power. Essentially when we closely
examine the idea of power in literature, we see that much of the conflict in novels is about
power; the struggle to gain, maintain or redress the balance of power. The need for power is a
reality of life; to use or abuse, to claim or deny, own or disown, to marginalize or empower. This
theme is omnipresent throughout literature about the Holocaust. Hitler and his struggle for power
and dominance are infamous. Novels and films set in World War II often examine the issues of
power in terms of race, age, gender and social class. One such novel is The Boy in the...show more

The years of 1933–1945 were a very dreadful time in Germany, Poland, and other countries in
Europe because of the Holocaust. The novel, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, written by John
Boyne, is all about the mistreatment and persecution of Jewish people, it gives true historical events
during that time. The main character, Bruno is an eight–year–old boy that has a dad that is a major
general of the Nazi Party. Bruno first lived in Berlin, Germany but was forced to move because of
his dad's job. When Bruno moved, he saw fenced in people in his backyard. The fenced in people
ended up being Jewish people in a concentration camp where people were tortured, starved, and
killed. Concentration camps are just some ways that the Nazis tortured the Jews. The Boy in the

Nazis. Throughout the time there wasn't the same Jewish people in the camp, almost 99 percent of
the Jews were killed in concentration camps. Shmuel got taken out of his home and separated from
his family, just to be put in a concentration camp. At first, he was with his family, but then his dad
went missing. Bruno looked all over the camp for his dad, but there was no luck, his had gotten

The Boy in Striped Pajamas is a heartrending film based on Bruno's struggles with friends, family,

situations. Even through Bruno's struggles, the film supports a major theme of friendship. In this
movie, Bruno and Shmuel strike an unlikely friendship that would ultimately be life changing. The
movie makes it clear that friendship can break all boundaries. The Boy in Striped Pajamas effectively
uses the elements of sound, costuming, lighting, and dialogue to support the theme of friendship.
The element of sound is used throughout the entirety of the film to support the essence of friendship.

Lighting is used multiple times throughout the film to support the theme of friendship. The first
example of lighting is present in the opening scenes of the movie. As Bruno and his friends are
playfully running through the streets of Berlin, the sun is shining and the picture is bright. In
contrast, Bruno's home when he finds out that his family is moving is dark and gloomy. Once again,
the director uses the lighting to display Bruno's emotions. When Bruno is with his friends, the
shining light indicates his happiness. However, when Bruno discovers that he is leaving his friends,
the dark lighting displays Bruno's dismal feeling. Similarly, the same concepts are used in the later
stages of the film. As Bruno wanders into the backyard, he finds the shed with a window, a possible
route to the "farm". As Bruno looks up at the window, the light shining through the open window is
vibrant. This bright light represents Bruno's escape from this place without friends to the farm where
friendship surely awaits him. Finally, the director uses lighting in scenes with both Bruno and
Shmuel to show their friendship. In scenes where Bruno and Shmuel are together, the lighting is
bright, once again representing the friendship between the two, along with Bruno's happiness in this
friendship. However, in the closing scenes of the movie, the lighting while Bruno and Shmuel are
together becomes

In the novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, the author highlights the main

"The boy in the striped pyjamas" is a 2006 Holocaust novel, written by Irish novelist John Boyne.
The novel has sold more than five million copies around the world. In both 2007 and 2008, it was
the best–selling book of the year in Spain, and it has also reached number one on The New York
Times bestseller list, as well as in the UK, Ireland and Australia. The book was adapted in 2008 as a
film of the same name. The story happens in the Nazi Germany. The setting is very important
because that's what makes the story develop according to the time and place. The characters are:
Bruno, a German boy at the age of 9, the son of a Nazi general and Schmuel, a young Jewish boy
with the same age as Bruno. These two characters are extremely important to the story, since they
are the main issue developing in the conflict. These two young boys will break the barriers
imposed by Hitler's regime and their social differences and will become friends. "The boy in the

John Boyne has created a sophisticated and meaningful novel in The Boy in the Striped
Pyjamas through his thematic analysis of power which explores society's perception of authority; his
symbolic representation of the fence which starkly exposes Bruno's ignorance of cultural divisions;
and п¬Ѓnally, his characterisation of Mother revealing the fraught atmosphere during the Holocaust.
The theme of power is explored in this novel through authoritative п¬Ѓgures and their presentation
in society. The character of Father displays his newfound sovereignty with ostentatiousness, and
Bruno observes this closely. He notes how Father's actions often lead to an instantaneous response,

His innocence is so innate that he remarks to Gretel, "I don't understand why we're not allowed on
the other side of it. What's so wrong with us that we can't go over there and play?" Bruno's
innocent perspective contrasts with the cruelty occurring, questioning its value in a time when it
was widely accepted. Just as Bruno does not see the fence as a reason for segregation, so too are
readers inspired to eradicate the fences of prejudice wherever they exist in society today. The
reflection this calls readers to undertake produces a profundity and sophistication in the novel.
The language used to convey Bruno's misunderstanding of the fence's symbolism is simplistic. This
literary technique, employed by Boyne, assists in portraying the naivety of
Bruno. Bruno's enquiry of "What's so wrong with us that we can't go over there and play?"
demonstrates how his juvenility shapes his view of the world, and allows his friendship with
Shmuel to flourish despite their division. Shmuel's concession that "they were all exactly the same
really" illustrates this fact. The boys' exemplar of friendship provided by their childish perspective
encourages the audience to accept everyone, contributing to the insightfulness of the book; and in
this way, its meaning and sophistication.

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas Essay
In The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, Bruno's attitudes and actions are mainly shaped by three
people, Pavel, Father and Shmuel. They shape Bruno's attitudes and actions mainly through deep
conversation. Boyne made Pavel shape Bruno's attitude towards the people on the other side of
the fence. Boyne also made Father shape Bruno's actions to go and explore the fence. Boyne
decided to make Shmuel shape Bruno's attitude of how he felt about Shmuel upon first meeting
him. The way Boyne made Pavel shape Bruno's attitudes and actions is through a conversation
they had after Bruno fell off the swing. Bruno finds out that Pavel was a different person on the
inside in this conversation. Boyne shows Pavel shaping Bruno's attitudes and actions was when
Pavel said "I think I've always been here", too Bruno. With us knowing Bruno lacks the ability to
think in some areas, it takes a while for Bruno to realise that Pavel lived in Poland and now has to
live on the other side of the fence. This conversation made Bruno finally realise that Pavel was a

Bruno asked this question because he is a curious boy and wants to find out why they are separated
from him. Boyne shows an example of Father shaping Bruno's actions was when Father said to
Bruno "Those people... well, they're not people at all". This confused Bruno, and made him more
curious. What Father meant was that the people on the other side of the fence didn't belong in this
world, and best to ignore them and pretend they are not there. Bruno is obviously not old enough to
understand this, and makes him more curious and want to explore. Father's quote was enough to
shape Bruno's action into what he should explore. This links back to the question, because it stands
out that Boyne obviously attempted to make Father shape Bruno's

Essay Question: "Books that engage directly with contemporary concerns and issues will always
involve a reader"
Through the study of the novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne, it is clear that the
concerns and issues, as well as the style and structure of a text, are what determines the reader's
involvement. In addition, the issues of the past (particularly those about war) still remain concerns
today. The issues amplified withinThe Boy in the Striped Pyjamas include detachment in family
relationships which can lead to disastrous consequences, and the withholding of information from

Because she too is alone at Auschwitz she replaces her friends and companions with dolls,

with Shmuel, a Jew from the other side of the fence, which in turn leads to a horrific ending. This
ending captures the reader because of the intensity and power in how it is written. If John Boyne had
narrated the story in any other way, the effect would not have been quite so horrific and potent. This
along with the main concern of the book captures the reader's attention, encouraging them to read on.
A major concern of World War Two which remains relevant to wars today is man's inhumanity to
man. Religious persecution is still common at present (Serbia, Northern Ireland etc) and it is
magnified in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas through the naive observations of Bruno. His father's
understated comment "those people... well they're not people at all, Bruno" (pg 53) ironically
explores the horrifying detachment for those who he is mass murdering. It is the father's emotionless
statement and Bruno's innocent lack of reaction as well as the horrifying truth of the murder of 2.5
million Jews which creates a contemporary concern. In addition the way this comment is written

Ultimately, Bruno and Shmuel are the same boy – facing opposite situations while both experience
in two universes separated by a single fence. One has been born into wealth and admiration and the
other into oppression and imprisonment. But at the inexperienced age of 8, neither have had the
chance to acknowledge the magnitude of what is happening around them and their way of seeing the
world is what pushes this extraordinary novel forward, climaxing into one of the most astonishing
endings ever written. The movie lacks the parallels between both boys, and cannot capture the

Moreover, the length of the novel gives more time to develop plots and expand on the main plot

shows what fear and Punishment and the innocence of childhood would have been like during WW2
and the holocaust.
During World War 2 and the holocaust, fear within the Jewish race was created by the soldiers.
Soldiers had the power and right to abuse and attack the Jewish people "when it pleased them."
Under Hitler, the soldiers had the next amount of ultimate power and used it to their advantage to
pressure the Jewish people under the influence that if they misbehave they will be punished. In the
movie 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' this 'fear' is seen when Lieutenant Kotler walks into the
dining room and sees Schmuel eating a pastry and Bruno...show more content...
A Jew could be punished for looking at a guard the wrong way or making a small error that would
be considered insignificant in any other situation. Punishments could vary from a beating, to a
bashing to the death chamber. In the movie 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' punishment on a Jew
is seen when Lieutenant Kotler bumps the servant Pavel while he is pouring red wine. It's not
Pavel's fault but because he is Jewish he is be blamed for the soldier's mistakes. The Lieutenant
drags the servant into the hall way and begins to bash him while the family are in the next room
eating in silence, listening to the punishment that Pavel is enduring. Another Example of Punishment
in 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' is when Lieutenant Kotler find Schmuel and Bruno talking in
the dining room. The Lieutenant see's Schmuel eating a pastry a questions the boys. When he finds
Schmuel 'guilty' of stealing food he is taken away. The next day when Bruno goes on his adventure
to the camp the audience can see that Schmuel has been punished for his actions. Schmuel is shown
to have had a beating and as a result he has a swollen eye with cuts and bruises all over his body.
The Punishment that seen throughout "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" displays what it would
have been like during the holocaust and World War 2 for the Jewish race.
During World War 2 and the Holocaust children were put through a living nightmare, being exposed
to killings, torture and punishment for something

  • 3. The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas Essay The distinctive features of the novel influence how the ideas within "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" by John Boyne affect the reader. The distinctive features of the point of view of a young boy, World War II and Nazis and anti –Semitism setting, help communicate to the reader Boyne's ideas. The ideas most apparent us are: that humankind is truly good and we're best characterized by our intelligence, imagination and ability to feel for others, that experiences can end an innocent viewpoint and that social conditioning can regulate and rationalize segregation, oppression, even genocide. These distinctive features presented on their own are interesting but when they're paired with the great ideas of this novel they become impactful. Our ideas...show more content... This is because young people wouldn't understand the horrors which allows Boyne to use this distinctive feature to properly show us that at its core humankind is essentially good, when awful things continually happen throughout the novel. We see this the strongest in the chapter eleven's title "The Fury" which is Bruno's naive way of saying "The FГјhrer". This communicates to us using Bruno's intelligent and imaginative point of view of the type of man the "The FГјhrer" is, by suggesting he's furious. This shows how the distinctive feature of the nine–year–old point of view helps advance Boyne's ideas. You can also see this in chapter twelve, when the two boys are comparing symbols. The quote "I don't know which one I prefer" from Bruno. This shows to us that from a naive nine–year–old's point of view these symbols; which represent segregation, mean nothing to him. Using Bruno's point of view we see that he's essentially good. The distinctive feature a nine–year–old's point of view magnifies some of the biggest ideas within the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas Essay In my book The Boy In Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, the main character Bruno is a strong willed boy sees his life during WWII through oblivious, suspicious eyes. As the story begins, Bruno moves to a new house at Auschwitz but he thinks it is "Out With." At First Bruno hates it at "out with" and he becomes suspicious of the fence between him and the people on the other side. At the very beginning of the book Bruno and his sister Gretel look out his window and Bruno says "look over there' Gretel follows the direction of the finger he was pointing and saw a group of children emerging from a hut." Bruno doesn't like not knowing what was out there so the next day Bruno and Gretel went back to the window. "Bruno and Gretel could see hundreds of people, but there were so many huts before them, and the camp spread out so much further than they could possibly see." • 5. The Boy In The Striped Pajamas Essay Fences are an expression of separation, an expression that no one should face. They separate benevolent from evil, friendly and cruel. They are not meant to separate Jews and others. In the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne, the setting, characters, plot and theme are chilling and exciting in this Holocaust novel. The setting of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is during the Holocaust, in 1945. Bruno–the protagonist– and his family live in a nazi house. Bruno's father is a Nazi officer, so they live near the concentration camp, Auschwitz. Bruno hates living there, and misses his three "best friends for life," until he discovers a new friend, Shmuel. Bruno also feels confused as to why the Jews were allowed to wear pajamas. "He was confused as to why the others got to wear pajamas every day. Why couldn't he?" If Bruno knew what was going on, he would not be jealous of the Jews. Bruno changes from disbelieving Shmuel about the condition of the Jews, to believing him when he enters the camp. "He didn't really believe that eleven people could live in the same room together." Bruno thought Shmuel was in the same boat as he was, not in trouble, but exaggerating a little. • 6. Boy In The Striped Pyjamas Essay It is through our experiences and context that we shape the way we perceive the world. However, it is through texts that writers are able to challenge and at times destabilise these perception's, to convey their ideas and values. Both, Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Rose Blanche have been written to show the audience something about the impact of an individual's context, using the Holocaust as a backdrop. Each text has a purpose and has been written to meet that purpose. Boyne uses the characterisation of the main protagonist Bruno, a nine year old boy, to create a perception of his experiences at the time of the Holocaust, showing the naivety in how he perceived the world. It's through this technique that he is able to destabilise our perception of experiences, utilising Bruno's willingness to make friends with Shmuel; thus disregarding the Germans prejudice against the Jews.' This experience demonstrates the importance of friendship to Bruno. 'He had been told on countless occasions by both mother and father not [to go] near the fence or Camp. Describe the relationship between Bruno and Gretel? (15 pts.) They didn't have the greatest relationship in the world, but then again no siblings do. All siblings fight or argue, but Bruno and Gretel did this a lot. Gretel thought she was so mature and that she was the boss of him and everything he did. • 9. Reflection Of The Boy In The Striped Pajamas Throughout the story of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, there is a glimpse of life during World War II that is shown through the eyes of a young boy, Bruno, who was shielded from the actuality of the war, and his personal development as he grows mentally and begins to learn who the people are on the other side of the fence. The story of Bruno and his family takes place in their new home, after unexpectedly having to move from their home in Berlin. Bruno's father receives a promotion and is now the commandment of the Out–With concentration camp and the family's new home is next to the gruesome camp. Because of his houses location, mean soldiers would often come in and out of his house without warning. From his bedroom window, he can see a long barbwire fence. On the other side of this fence, there was many people in striped pajamas, some marching in lines led by soldiers and some falling and never getting up. This scene left young Bruno with many questions and not enough answers. One morning, Bruno's love for adventure is greater than his fear of discipline and he steps outside and follows the long fence, unaware of what it would lead to. After walking for what seems like hours, Bruno comes across a young boy in striped pajamas sitting on the other side of the fence. Bruno sits across from him and both the boys formally introduce themselves. The young boy's name is Shmuel. Little did Bruno know this conversation would be the beginning of a good friendship. Essentially when we closely examine the idea of power in literature, we see that much of the conflict in novels is about power; the struggle to gain, maintain or redress the balance of power. The need for power is a reality of life; to use or abuse, to claim or deny, own or disown, to marginalize or empower. This theme is omnipresent throughout literature about the Holocaust. • 11. The Boy In The Striped Pajamas Essay The years of 1933–1945 were a very dreadful time in Germany, Poland, and other countries in Europe because of the Holocaust. The novel, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, written by John Boyne, is all about the mistreatment and persecution of Jewish people, it gives true historical events during that time. The main character, Bruno is an eight–year–old boy that has a dad that is a major general of the Nazi Party. Bruno first lived in Berlin, Germany but was forced to move because of his dad's job. When Bruno moved, he saw fenced in people in his backyard. The fenced in people ended up being Jewish people in a concentration camp where people were tortured, starved, and killed. Concentration camps are just some ways that the Nazis tortured the Jews. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas relates back to concentration camps and the Nazis...show more content... Shmuel got taken out of his home and separated from his family, just to be put in a concentration camp. At first, he was with his family, but then his dad went missing. Bruno looked all over the camp for his dad, but there was no luck, his had gotten killed. When People were in concentration camp they all had to dress in a uniform, if they refused to wear the uniforms, they would get killed. When Bruno first met Shmuel, he thought he was wearing pajamas, but he was really wearing the uniform. When Bruno finally went on the other side of the fence, Shmuel got him a uniform to use. Bruno, a young boy who is the son of a Nazi soldier, faces multiple troublesome situations. Even through Bruno's struggles, the film supports a major theme of friendship. In this movie, Bruno and Shmuel strike an unlikely friendship that would ultimately be life changing. The movie makes it clear that friendship can break all boundaries. The Boy in Striped Pajamas effectively uses the elements of sound, costuming, lighting, and dialogue to support the theme of friendship. The element of sound is used throughout the entirety of the film to support the essence of friendship. In the opening scenes of the movie, Bruno is seen playfully...show more content... Lighting is used multiple times throughout the film to support the theme of friendship. The first example of lighting is present in the opening scenes of the movie. As Bruno and his friends are playfully running through the streets of Berlin, the sun is shining and the picture is bright. In contrast, Bruno's home when he finds out that his family is moving is dark and gloomy. Once again, the director uses the lighting to display Bruno's emotions. When Bruno is with his friends, the shining light indicates his happiness. However, when Bruno discovers that he is leaving his friends, the dark lighting displays Bruno's dismal feeling. Similarly, the same concepts are used in the later stages of the film. As Bruno wanders into the backyard, he finds the shed with a window, a possible route to the "farm". As Bruno looks up at the window, the light shining through the open window is vibrant. This bright light represents Bruno's escape from this place without friends to the farm where friendship surely awaits him. Finally, the director uses lighting in scenes with both Bruno and Shmuel to show their friendship. In scenes where Bruno and Shmuel are together, the lighting is bright, once again representing the friendship between the two, along with Bruno's happiness in this friendship. However, in the closing scenes of the movie, the lighting while Bruno and Shmuel are together becomes Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In both 2007 and 2008, it was the best–selling book of the year in Spain, and it has also reached number one on The New York Times bestseller list, as well as in the UK, Ireland and Australia. The book was adapted in 2008 as a film of the same name. The story happens in the Nazi Germany. The setting is very important because that's what makes the story develop according to the time and place. The characters are: Bruno, a German boy at the age of 9, the son of a Nazi general and Schmuel, a young Jewish boy with the same age as Bruno. These two characters are extremely important to the story, since they are the main issue developing in the conflict. These two young boys will break the barriers imposed by Hitler's regime and their social differences and will become friends. Bruno and Shmuel become friends without any other interests but to have a friend. • 16. Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Essay John Boyne has created a sophisticated and meaningful novel in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas through his thematic analysis of power which explores society's perception of authority; his symbolic representation of the fence which starkly exposes Bruno's ignorance of cultural divisions; and п¬Ѓnally, his characterisation of Mother revealing the fraught atmosphere during the Holocaust. The theme of power is explored in this novel through authoritative п¬Ѓgures and their presentation in society. The character of Father displays his newfound sovereignty with ostentatiousness, and Bruno observes this closely. He notes how Father's actions often lead to an instantaneous response, stating, "Father held a hand in the air, which immediately...show more content... His innocence is so innate that he remarks to Gretel, "I don't understand why we're not allowed on the other side of it. What's so wrong with us that we can't go over there and play?" Bruno's innocent perspective contrasts with the cruelty occurring, questioning its value in a time when it was widely accepted. Just as Bruno does not see the fence as a reason for segregation, so too are readers inspired to eradicate the fences of prejudice wherever they exist in society today. The reflection this calls readers to undertake produces a profundity and sophistication in the novel. The language used to convey Bruno's misunderstanding of the fence's symbolism is simplistic. This literary technique, employed by Boyne, assists in portraying the naivety of Bruno. Bruno's enquiry of "What's so wrong with us that we can't go over there and play?" demonstrates how his juvenility shapes his view of the world, and allows his friendship with Shmuel to flourish despite their division. Shmuel's concession that "they were all exactly the same really" illustrates this fact. The boys' exemplar of friendship provided by their childish perspective encourages the audience to accept everyone, contributing to the insightfulness of the book; and in this way, its meaning and sophistication. • 17. The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas Essay In The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, Bruno's attitudes and actions are mainly shaped by three people, Pavel, Father and Shmuel. They shape Bruno's attitudes and actions mainly through deep conversation. Boyne made Pavel shape Bruno's attitude towards the people on the other side of the fence. Boyne also made Father shape Bruno's actions to go and explore the fence. Boyne decided to make Shmuel shape Bruno's attitude of how he felt about Shmuel upon first meeting him. The way Boyne made Pavel shape Bruno's attitudes and actions is through a conversation they had after Bruno fell off the swing. Bruno finds out that Pavel was a different person on the inside in this conversation. Boyne shows Pavel shaping Bruno's attitudes and actions was when Pavel said "I think I've always been here", too Bruno. With us knowing Bruno lacks the ability to think in some areas, it takes a while for Bruno to realise that Pavel lived in Poland and now has to live on the other side of the fence. This conversation made Bruno finally realise that Pavel was a different person on the inside. This also changes what Bruno thinks...show more content... Bruno asked this question because he is a curious boy and wants to find out why they are separated from him. Boyne shows an example of Father shaping Bruno's actions was when Father said to Bruno "Those people... well, they're not people at all". This confused Bruno, and made him more curious. What Father meant was that the people on the other side of the fence didn't belong in this world, and best to ignore them and pretend they are not there. Bruno is obviously not old enough to understand this, and makes him more curious and want to explore. Father's quote was enough to shape Bruno's action into what he should explore. This links back to the question, because it stands out that Boyne obviously attempted to make Father shape Bruno's Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 19. Essay on The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS Essay Question: "Books that engage directly with contemporary concerns and issues will always involve a reader" Through the study of the novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne, it is clear that the concerns and issues, as well as the style and structure of a text, are what determines the reader's involvement. In addition, the issues of the past (particularly those about war) still remain concerns today. The issues amplified withinThe Boy in the Striped Pyjamas include detachment in family relationships which can lead to disastrous consequences, and the withholding of information from the youthful and innocent which can create dangerous situations. Along with these, is the main issue of the...show more content... Because she too is alone at Auschwitz she replaces her friends and companions with dolls, therefore leaving Bruno with no one but himself and in need in company. "I'm going back to my room to arrange my dolls" (pg 38). It is his family's detachment that leads him to create new bonds with Shmuel, a Jew from the other side of the fence, which in turn leads to a horrific ending. This ending captures the reader because of the intensity and power in how it is written. If John Boyne had narrated the story in any other way, the effect would not have been quite so horrific and potent. This along with the main concern of the book captures the reader's attention, encouraging them to read on. A major concern of World War Two which remains relevant to wars today is man's inhumanity to man. Religious persecution is still common at present (Serbia, Northern Ireland etc) and it is magnified in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas through the naive observations of Bruno. His father's understated comment "those people... well they're not people at all, Bruno" (pg 53) ironically explores the horrifying detachment for those who he is mass murdering. It is the father's emotionless statement and Bruno's innocent lack of reaction as well as the horrifying truth of the murder of 2.5 million Jews which creates a contemporary concern. In addition the way this comment is written creates enormous reader involvement as they see Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Boy In The Striped Pajamas Essay Boy in the Striped Pajamas: Movie Vs Book A pen and a mind are always more powerful than a camera and actor. An old theory proven once again. Film is an impeccable way of dramatic and visual storytelling, yet once again no other form of story compares to the novel 'The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas' by John Boyne. The stack of ink and paper bound together create the unique and mysterious story; the novel and only the novel can create the same depth of character and plot. Every individual can have a different interpretation of the same novel let alone the same sentence based on their life experience and beliefs, this is a rare occurrence with film as everything is shown to you, restricting your imagination. Ultimately, Bruno and Shmuel are the same boy – facing opposite situations while both experience in two universes separated by a single fence. One has been born into wealth and admiration and the other into oppression and imprisonment. But at the inexperienced age of 8, neither have had the chance to acknowledge the magnitude of what is happening around them and their way of seeing the world is what pushes this extraordinary novel forward, climaxing into one of the most astonishing endings ever written. The movie lacks the parallels between both boys, and cannot capture the innocence of the duo. The ending of the movie is not as mind–blowing as the book; trading mystery and innocence for drama. Moreover, the length of the novel gives more time to develop plots and expand on the main plot which centers around Bruno and Shmuel. The movie summed up the plot and didn't complete it. With the extra content we get to expand our knowledge of Auschwitz camp, the relationship between Bruno and Shmuel doesn't feel rushed and the novel has more depth with side characters and backstory/side plots (i.e grandmother, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Essay The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas presents ideas about World War 2 and the holocaust. The movie shows what fear and Punishment and the innocence of childhood would have been like during WW2 and the holocaust. During World War 2 and the holocaust, fear within the Jewish race was created by the soldiers. Soldiers had the power and right to abuse and attack the Jewish people "when it pleased them." Under Hitler, the soldiers had the next amount of ultimate power and used it to their advantage to pressure the Jewish people under the influence that if they misbehave they will be punished. In the movie 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' this 'fear' is seen when Lieutenant Kotler walks into the dining room and sees Schmuel eating a pastry and Bruno...show more content... A Jew could be punished for looking at a guard the wrong way or making a small error that would be considered insignificant in any other situation. Punishments could vary from a beating, to a bashing to the death chamber. In the movie 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' punishment on a Jew is seen when Lieutenant Kotler bumps the servant Pavel while he is pouring red wine. It's not Pavel's fault but because he is Jewish he is be blamed for the soldier's mistakes. The Lieutenant drags the servant into the hall way and begins to bash him while the family are in the next room eating in silence, listening to the punishment that Pavel is enduring. Another Example of Punishment in 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' is when Lieutenant Kotler find Schmuel and Bruno talking in the dining room. The Lieutenant see's Schmuel eating a pastry a questions the boys. When he finds Schmuel 'guilty' of stealing food he is taken away. The next day when Bruno goes on his adventure to the camp the audience can see that Schmuel has been punished for his actions. Schmuel is shown to have had a beating and as a result he has a swollen eye with cuts and bruises all over his body. The Punishment that seen throughout "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" displays what it would have been like during the holocaust and World War 2 for the Jewish race.
