The story describes how seven little fish and their mother lived in the sea. Their mother warned them not to go into the open waters because the fisherman Tataraimaka was fishing that day. However, the seven fish disobeyed and went into the open sea, where Tataraimaka caught them. Upset by their crying, the God of light placed the seven fish in the sky, turning them into stars known as Matariki.
