2. A computer is an electronic machine that
processes and stores information.
3. A computer system is
more than just a
computer. It is a
combination of
“components working
together to perform a
specific task”.

collection of
instructions
(also known as a
program) that

is simply
the user of
a computer
5. MAIN HARDWARE COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
SYSTEM
System unit- is the part of the computer that houses the
primary devices that perform operations and produce result for
complex computations.
6. MAIN HARDWARE COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
SYSTEM
Motherboard / mainboard / system board - the
computer's main circuit board that allows other computer
parts to be connected to one another.
7. MAIN HARDWARE COMPONENTS OF A
COMPUTER SYSTEM
CPU (central processing unit)- or
microprocessor is known as the “brain” of a
computer system.
8. MAIN HARDWARE COMPONENTS OF A
COMPUTER SYSTEM
Primary storage (internal storage, main memory, or memory) is the
working storage space of the computer that contains data, processing
instructions and processed data (information) waiting for secondary
storage.
9. MAIN HARDWARE COMPONENTS OF A
COMPUTER SYSTEM
Expansion bus- A bus is a data pathway between
multiple components of the hardware within or
outside of a device
10. MAIN HARDWARE COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
SYSTEM
Power supply unit (psu)- installed next to the
motherboard, in the back corner of the pc case.
11. MAIN HARDWARE COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
SYSTEM
Hard disk drive (HDD)- A magnetic storage disk that is
mounted inside the computer is also known as hard drive. The
hard drive acts as permanent data storage. The hard disk is
normally configured as the C: drive on a windows computer.
12. MAIN HARDWARE COMPONENTS OF A
COMPUTER SYSTEM
Optical disc drive (ODD)- uses a laser light
to read data from or write data to an optical
disc.
13. Input devices - accepts data and instructions
from the user or from another computer system
•Two types of input devices
1. Keyboard entry- data is entered through a keyboard
into the computer.
2. Direct entry - a form of input that does not require
data to be keyed by someone sitting at a keyboard.
Direct-entry devices create machine-readable data on
paper, or magnetic media, or feed it directly into the
computer’s CPU.
•
14. Three categories of direct entry devices
1. Pointing
devices
- an input device used on
the screen to move the
pointer (cursor). E.g:
Mouse, touch screen, light
pen, and digitizer tablet.
2. Scanning
devices
- a device capable of reading
paper-printed text or
diagrams and converting the
information into a form that
the user can use. Examples
are image scanner and bar
code reader
3. Voice- Input
Devices
Audio input devices also known
as voice or speech recognition
systems that allow a user to send
audio signals to a computer for
processing, recording, or
executing commands.
15. Output devices- any computer hardware component
that shows results after the computer processes the
input data entered
1.Computer display monitor- using text and graphics, it
displays information in visual form
2.LCD projectors- utilize two sheets of polarizing
3.Smart board- A type of display board with a touch-board
like a touch screen.
4.Printer- a tool which prints text or images on paper.
5.Speakers- used to play sound
17. Software is the collection of instructions (also known
as a program) that direct the hardware for successful
operations.
1.System software- any software
required to support the production
or execution of application
programs, but which is not specific
to any application
2.Application software- designed
to assist the user in performing
single or multiple tasks.
