The inspiration for Flowers series was Patricia Caulfield's photograph. published in the June edition of the Modern Photography magazine (No.6/1964). Warhol cut out a square part of the original photograph of altheas and made a black and white reproduction of four flowers. In that way, the technological process of screen printing accentuated the flatness and the contours of the flowers. Afterwards. Warhol continued creatively -he was enlarging the screen print's dimensions. colouring them in different colours. By tilting the painting by 90 or 180 degrees, he was changing the colour and visual composition of the flowers, and therefore he could achieve a great variety from one single. original motive. Flowers were the first series that was purely decorative. Exhibited for the first time at the end of 196$ in the Leo Castetli Gallery and by the mid<«rtir= .<. about 900 pieces were sold.

In the mid-1960s similar issues were being tackled by Richard Hamilton in England and the German Pop artists Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke. Warhol used signs from popular culture and was interested not so much in popular culture itself as in the myths generated by it. He could be ruthless: if one of the figures he painted ceased to function on the mythical level he would abandon it and seek out other heroes of the mass imagination.

The idea for the series originated from gallerist Ronald Feldman. who commissioned it for the Israeli art dealer Alexander I-tarari in 1980. Warhol expressed little interest in the subjects of the series. he didn't know some of them. and it was Feldman who had come up with the list of names. Warhol said that he depicted these figures because he liked their laces. The series is somehow an extension of Warhol's preoccupation with celebrity. He contrasted and individualized the photographs of publicly known portraits. by inserting tinted geometric planes into them -the planes being in a select few of his favourite. clean colours. The tinted planes in the portraits of the Jews were not meant to express the individual characteristics ol these people. They served Warhol. so he. as an artist. could appropriate the screenprints.
