The Election Commission of India is an independent constitutional body responsible for organizing free and fair elections. It was established on January 25, 1950 under Article 324 of the Indian Constitution. The Commission currently consists of the Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners appointed by the President of India. The Election Commission is fully independent and isolated from executive interference. It oversees electoral disputes and other electoral matters.

Structure: The Commission currently consists of the elections chief controller and the two election
commissioners, appointed by the President. By October 1989 there was only one Chief Election
Commissioner. In 1989, two election commissioners, appointed, but was kidnapped in January 1990. In
1991, however, the Indian parliament passed a law appointing election commissioners. This law was
amended in 1993 and named head of the Electoral Commission and other Election Commission

Power and Duties: The Electoral Board is fully independent and has been isolated from any form of

Appointment and tenure of commissioners: The president appoints the head of the Electoral
Commission and election commissioners. Electoral Commission and the Director of the Electoral
Commission have the right to control up to six years or 65 years and 62 years, whichever comes first.
