Sara Cardona presents her 2009 art image Partum. Cardona is a local Dallas
artist whom is a Dallas Community College Professor. Most of her art work is inspired
by her childhood and life experiences. Women are the main focus point in her paintings.

Partumis a portrait of a woman with a shadow of vines covering her face. Her
hair is pinned back with decorative butterflies, flowers,beads and corn, which represents
her beauty.Thewoman’sfacial features is emphasized by the fine darken of the pencil.
She has the eyes of a teenage girl that has had her heart broken or have been through
a traumatic experience.
The photo is made of mixed media both dry and wet. According to Cardona this
art piece was created with simple office supplies, such as ink, ball point, white out,
markers, thread and etc.The painting is drawn in two-dimensional media. This picture
doesn’t have too much texture but patterns dominate this portrait. The artist carefully
drew natural patterns in the woman’s hair. Cardona uses contour, calligraphic,
directional, hatching lines to create this art work (pg24).
The lady in this image appears to have a blank stare upon her face. Her
emotionless look gives the idea that she is hiding something. The thick vines covering

her face is a way to protect her from reality. She is a woman of beauty whom has been
deeply hurt on several occasions by life. The lady carries herself in a boastful and
classy manner but yet still wants to seem invisible to the world.It seems as if she is
afraid to express her feelings and reveal her true self.In her shadows she can assume
any identity she wants.
Studying this art piece gives you the idea that the woman is going through
something in her life. She appears to want to break free and release from all the stress.
The veil upon her face gives her sense calmness and allows block out the world around
her.
