(1957)
La valeur minimale de
densité électronique * la
durée de confinement
de l'énergie en fonction
de la température.
Pour la réaction DT, le
minimum de neτE est
proche de la
température de 25 keV
(300 millions de
kelvins).
4. On earth the options are: Inertial fusion or magnetic confinement

5. Principe du Tokamak
Confinement du plasma (noyaux de
D/T + electrons) par un champ
magnétique
En première approximation les
particules chargées suivent les
lignes de champ magnétique
=> En créant des surfaces
magnétiques fermées on confine le
plasma.
En seconde approximation (champ
électrique, gradient de B, courbure
de B), les particules ne restent pas
dans les surfaces magnétiques, elles
dérivent.
=> Déconfinement (i.e. temps de
confinement)

8. Organisation du programme
fusion (EU)
• EFDA - European Fusion Development Agreement,
organisation qui chapeaute les laboratoires de recherche
en fusion
• F4E – Fusion for Energy, entité légale qui organise la
contribution EU à ITER (essentiellement contrats de
fabrication) == Broader approach (EU-JP) + DEMO
• ITER - International Thermonuclear Experimental

15. Fuel

18. Cost of electricity
(énergie électrique envoyée sur le réseau)
System studies, eg. PROCESS code in Fusion Power Plan
studies show:
CoE depends more heavily on operational and
engineering parameters than on physics variables:

Physics - high β,

Thus technology development is more important than physics
development at the DEMO Stage.
However the physics
determines if the scenario is basically feasible/attractive
scenario interacts with the technology as a key selection
criterion (via the Divertor and the H&CD)

22. EU Fusion Roadmap
•
Horizon 2020 (2014-2020) with five objectives
–
–
–
–
–
•
Construct ITER within scope, schedule and cost;
Secure the success of future ITER operation;
Prepare the ITER generation of scientists, engineers and operators;
Lay the foundation of the fusion power plant;
Promote innovation and EU industry competitiveness.
- Second period (2021-2030):
– Exploit ITER up to its maximum performance and prepare DEMO construction.
•
- Third period (2031-2050):
– Complete the ITER exploitation; construct and operate DEMO.
EU DEMO is the only step between ITER and a commercial fusion power plant:
- Produce net electricity for the grid at the level of a few hundred MWs;
- Breed the amount of tritium needed to close its fuel cycle; and
- Demonstrate all the technologies for the construction of a commercial FPP,
including an adequate level of availability.

Not based on extrapolations rather uses rules an
boundary conditions.
The model “invests” in new power plants to
accommodate population growth and economic
development and to replace “old” plants, which
are phased out after a specified technical
lifetime.
