The Zumba® program was created because of Beto’s passion for Latin music,
exotic dance rhythms, & fitness. He felt that group fitness classes needed to
be fun- with party-like, ―no-thinking‖ elements – to make it appealing to the
masses, not just for fit, coordinated participants. He wanted EVERYONE, of
all fitness levels, to be able to participate in a class.

Editor's Notes
BMI >30 to be considered ObeseFor adults, overweight and obesity ranges are determined by using weight and height to calculate a number called the "body mass index" (BMI). BMI is used because, for most people, it correlates with their amount of body fat.An adult who has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight. An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.Although BMI is only one indicator, the NHI suggests looking at two other factors:Individual waist circumference (abdominal fat is a predictor of risk for obesity related diseases)Risk factors related to disease (high BP, inactivity)Research has shown that as weight increases to reach the levels referred to as "overweight" and "obesity,"* the risks for the following conditions also increases:1Coronary heart diseaseType 2 diabetesCancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)Hypertension (high blood pressure)Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)StrokeLiver and Gallbladder diseaseSleep apnea and respiratory problemsOsteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)
Barriers to any exercise program:Time: Busy with job/family/careers/work-life balanceCommitment: Balancing work/life demands vs. needs vs. wants – disciplined schedule for health promotionMotivation: most people struggle with independent exercise – group fitness classes give a supportive environment for similar interestsInspiration: self discovery – personal risk assessment, medical crisis, deterioration in health/wellness/adl’sResources: where to find a class, personal training, community education offerings/cost
Alberto “Beto” Perez is the creative genius behind the Zumba Fitness formula that has millions of people amazed at the changes in their bodies, minds, & lifestyles.Beto began dancing as a young boy in his hometown of Cali, located in the southern most part of Colombia, South America. As a teenager, he used his dance skills to help pay bills by choreographing for local artists and dancing in salsa clubs. He won a scholarship to a prestigious dance academy there and upon graduation became an instructor, specializing in Latin Dance (specifically salsa, merengue, and rumba). He also taught modern dance, tap, funk, and jazz. He became a personal trainer and group exercise instructor. The story: One day upon arriving to one his classes, he realized he had left his traditional aerobics music at home. Improvising, he unpacked some of his favorite Latin music from tapes in his backpack, popped them into the sound system, and taught his first Zumba class!Within months of his impromptu Zumba class, Beto’s class caught on. He became so popular in Cali that music star, Shakira, hired him as a choreographer for one of her albums. In 2000, Beto moved to U.S. Armed with only his personal charisma and unstoppable willpower, he moved to Miami in pursuit of the American Dream. In 2001, he met two entrepreneurs (Alberto Perlman & Alberto Aghion). The three men joined together and created Zumba Fitness, LLC – a global company based on Beto’s fitness philosophy.

Cardio based dance movements are easy to follow steps that include body sculpting, which targets areas such as gluteus, legs, arms, core, abs, and most importantly ==the HEART!Previous dance experience not necessary.A zumba class creates a party-like atmosphere: Lights outs, music up!* non-intimidating opportunity for non-dancers, new exercisers, and those previously hesitant to try other group classes to experience fun, fitness, & fellowship
Go with the flowNo wrong movesDancers & veteran exercisers coupled with new participants all in one class experience a healthy, fun, party like environmentParticipants have a blast and don’t even realize they’re exercising…it feels so good they want to do it everyday and keep moving after the music stops!DESIGNED for everyone – any fitness level, background, any age can start the program right away. Known as the Zumba Pool Party: Aqua Zumba gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Splashing, stretching, twisting, even shouting, laughing, hooting, and hollering are often heard during an Aqua Zumba class. Integrating the Zumba formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba blends it all together into a safe, challenging, water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief.Nikol was the first to bring AZ to southern AR. Union County is fortunate to have the use of the a year round pool at HFC to permit this Aquatic Revolution experience.Youtube video link: http://youtu.be/ajv8AMBNwsY
You tube videolink: http://youtu.be/qno0l3n4j_QWhen it comes to body sculpting, Zumba toning raises the bar (or rather, the toning stick). It combines targeted body-sculpting exercises & high-energy cardio work with Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching, strength-training dance fitness party. Students learn how to use lightweight, maraca like toning sticks (sand filled) to enhance rhythm and tone all their target zones (arms, abs, glutes, thighs).
Youtube videolink: http://youtu.be/35bBqEEmcGoZumba Gold targets the largest growing segment of the population: baby boomers. It takes the Zumba formula and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of the active older participant, as well as those just starting their journey to a fit & healthy lifestyle. What stays the same are all the elements of the Z formula. Active older adults want camaraderie, excitement, and fitness as a regular part of their weekly schedule.Who is the Zumba Gold® Participant?Active, older adultsBeginner Zumba® participantsSpecial populations (ex: modifications for chair, physical/cognitive needs, expectant mothers)Not characterized by age alone!
