The Scientific Method
The scientific method is an organized way that helps anyone answer a question or begin to solve a
problem. It is used in all types of Sciences such as Chemistry, Physics, Geology, and Psychology.
For psychologists it offers a standardized way to test a hypothesis, build on theories, and gain
knowledge about the mind. There are several steps to The Scientific Method and each step serves its
own purpose. By using the Scientific Method, you can understand better what psychologists go
through to arrive at conclusions about human behavior.

I have used the scientific method in my case study to prove my hypothesis, if a plant is grown in
light it will grow faster than a plant grown in the dark. To conduct my experiment, you will need
lima beans, potting soil, and styrofoam cups. First, put three inches of potting soil into each
styrofoam cup. Then plant the lima bean seed about one inch below the surface of the soil. Next add
three tablespoons of water to each cup. Put one cup in a window seal or where there will be bright

A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and
the formulation and testing of hypotheses. Although procedures vary from one field of inquiry to
another, identifiable features distinguish scientific inquiry from other methodologies of knowledge.
Scientific researchers propose hypotheses as explanations of phenomena, and design experimental
studies to test these hypotheses. These steps must be repeatable in order to dependably predict any
future results. Theories that encompass wider domains of inquiry may bind many hypotheses
together in a coherent structure. This in turn may help form new hypotheses or place groups of
hypotheses into context. Among other facets shared by the various fields of inquiry is the
conviction that the process be objective to reduce a biased interpretation of the results. Another basic
expectation is to document, archive and share all data and methodology so they are available for
careful scrutiny by other scientists, thereby allowing other researchers the opportunity to verify
results by attempting to reproduce them. This practice, called full disclosure, also allows statistical
measures of the reliability of these data to be established.

In the article understanding "Science and How it Really Works", It becomes apparent that the
Scientific Method is much more involved and dynamic than simply forming a Hypothesis, making
observations, conducting an experiment and forming a conclusion based on the data collected.
While these processes are the backbone they don't necessarily always follow one another in a
sequence and there is much more involved in each step than one may perceive from the simple list.
Generally speaking the Scientific Method begins with an observation that allows you to form a
hypothesis. In order to come up with a well informed hypothesis one can look through scientific
journals that may lend some light onto the subject your thinking of investigating. Sometimes talking
with peers or discovering new tools on the market that allow you to look at things differently than

Good experiments that produce reliable data generally have some factors to consider. The sample
size and whether it is a good representation of the "universe" you are considering. Are there any
biases in the way in which the samples are selected? In other words is it random and does everything
within your "universe" have an equal chance of being selected in your sample? If you are testing the
effects of certain drugs for example is there a control group that is not receiving the treatment? Last

Almost 2000 years later Galileo challenged Aristotle's s work on mechanics and cosmology. Galileo
did not ridicule Aristotle, but simply showed that he had jumped to the wrong conclusions and
derived at inadequate answers because of his physics being not very mathematical. Errors in
Aristotle's work were rectified through direct observation and by the availability of new instruments
and experimentation techniques in the 17th century. Amongst other contributions, Galileo

The lesson that is perhaps the most important one we learned this week is the scientific method. The
scientific method is not only used in particularly every subsection in science, but allows
psychologists to test different ideas about behavior. Pastorino and Doyle–Portillo in the General

questions based on what she finds out about the flu. The child says he has muscle aches, is tired
has already reported a headache, and the mother checks his temperature, he is running a mildly
elevated temperature which has risen a full degree when checked an hour later. The mother could
not find any credible information about the change in her son's diet for a single meal to test that
theory. Because of the elevated temperature she gives her son a children's fever reducer, which
also helps to relieve her child's headache. She puts the child back to bed and checks on him every
few hours, his temperature is still elevated but lower than it was initially she estimates by touch, in
the morning she confirms by taking the child's temperature again, it is closer to the level it had
been the night before causing her to provide another dose of fever reducer and call the doctor's
office, the doctor's office confirms that the symptoms are likely the flu, and tell her to keep her son

The Scientific method is a process that scientists use to solve a problem. It generally involves four
distinct steps that constitute the "Scientific Method". This paper describes the steps of the scientific
method, and its application in a real–world scenario we experienced.
Step 1: Formulating a Problem
Formulating a problem can range from simple to difficult solutions to a problem. In order to solve a

When the water level in the sump pit rises, this switch turns on the pump. This pumps the water out
of the pit and into a pipe which ejects the drainage water out of the house and (hopefully) far away
from the house."
With the sump pump installed, we waited for severe rainstorms to hit before observing the results.
After one light storm, there was no flooding. But after a second, more severe storm, the floor
continued to take on water, which led us to the Conclusion that either the flooding was not due to the
rising water table, or the sump pump was ineffective at stopping the rising water table.
At that point we decided to observe the flow of water outside during the next big storm. When it
finally hit, we went outside and observed a significant amount of water flowing straight down the
wall just outside the walkway, from the top of the walkway under the deck. Once again, the
walkway floor took on water. We revised ourHypothesis to state that the basement walkway was
flooding due to water flowing directly down the exterior wall, underground, where it entered gaps in
the wall to the walkway.
Our solution to test the Hypothesis was to install a gutter under the deck, under the flashing which
separated the walkway roof to the walkway exterior wall. This would catch rain water and funnel it
away from the wall, therefore preventing water from flowing directly down the wall where it could
enter the walkway

Scientific method what comes to mind? Do we start thinking of some type of formal process that

Pieces of tissue with glitter along with pink and blue color on them. The water and tissue then
began going down the toilet rapidly. So I gave it an extra flush and everything went flowing down
the toilet like it was supposed to. My hypothesis was true. This problem has been solved correctly.
Come to find out, my daughter was enjoying polishing her nails. She was trying different colors
and designs. She used plenty or more than enough tissue to clean her nails and change the site of
them. Instead of putting the tissue in the trash can, she decided to put the tissue in the toilet. She
was able to flush the toilet being that there was no previous clog up. The water just flowed down
and the tissue lingered around which caused the toilet to become clogged. Scenario 2: A problem
with an appliance at your home. My family and I just moved into a new home. One morning not
long after moving there and eating picnic food and/or fast food we decided it was time to go
grocery shopping. We went to the grocery store, came home, unload the trunk full of groceries,
and load it into the freezer. Later on I went into the freezer to grab some ice cream for the kids to eat
and it was soft. It did not become soft during the ride home from the grocery store. I am sure of
that because we carry a cooler filled with ice when we go grocery shopping. I stuck the ice cream

There are several disease that are we still do not know much about despite copious amounts of
research. Cancer and Alzheimer's are two major examples of these mysterious diseases. Although
the scientific method is useful in the development and research on various medications and
treatments, there are still limitations. Patients react to treatments in various ways, because bodies
and systems vary from person to person. There is simply too many variable to be able to pinpoint
the exact reaction a patient may have. Clinical trials and studies can narrow down these reactions
down to a list of possible side effects, but doctors can never know for sure how a patient will
respond. There are many unknowns and treating actual patients is much different that conducting an
experiment investigating how two medications will effect an experimental unit. During a designed
