If you had the opportunity to save someone's life, would you? This is the question one must ask
oneself when considering a stance on the controversial topic of organ donation. Simply put, organ
donation is defined as the "process through which human organs are obtained for transplant surgery"
(Klotzko, 2017, para. 1). In the United States alone, the number of people on the waiting list for
these life–saving transplants is over 100,000 with approximately 7,000 of those people dying each
year (Merola et al., 2016). With the help of a donor, these waitlisted patients can receive the best
gift of all–a second chance at life.
The Process of Saving Lives There are many aspects to the organ donation system. First, the
potential donors and recipients have to meet certain criteria to be approved to continue on in the
process. The requirements to be a donor are rather basic, meaning that as long as the benefactor is
healthy, or healthy prior to a traumatic accident that causes them to become a deceased donor, they
should have no problem being able to donate (10 Most Notable Pros and Cons of Organ Donation,
2016). As far as getting on the transplant list, the patient is evaluated for severe organ damage (that
does not respond to other treatment) that significantly reduces the quality of life or the life
expectancy (Baumgartner, 2017). Next, the patient is put on the national waiting list until a match
becomes available for them. After a match is located, the organ is harvested from the donor and
transplanted into the recipient, who then begins the long road to recovery.
Finding a Donor Donor organs fall into two categories: those from living and those from
deceased (where most come from). Deceased donors can donate: two kidneys, two lungs, a liver,
heart, pancreas, intestines, as well as hands and faces. Living donors can donate: one kidney, one
lung, portions of the intestine, liver, or pancreas ("What Can Be Donated," n.d.). The problem with
using deceased donor's organs is that there are only about 10,000 to 12,000 deaths annually that
occur in such a way for the organs to be viable for transplant, meaning a small chance of finding a

organ donation as they graduated from the district's driver's education program. Phillip Van Stavern
of the local nonprofit agency LifeQuest spoke to the aspiring new drivers about the importance of

Organ donation is the only current way for humans to survive when they have vital organs that
are shutting down. In today's society, people can donate blood, a kidney, and part of their liver
while they are still alive. People also make the decision whether they would like to have their vital
organs donated after they have passed away if they are still viable organs. There has been much
debate about whether people or their families should be able to receive financial compensation for
organs that they are giving to someone else to save their lives. I do not believe that financial
compensation should be given to living donors that are willing to sell their organs because this

wrong reasons. College students may sell organs while they are in tight situations with money so that
they have the extra money to pay for school and partying but they may not have the best family
history with diseases that may cause them to need an organ transplant one day. This is dangerous
because the person donating the organ may not have needed a transplant later in life had they had
both kidneys that were of average function. It can also cause problems for the person that is
receiving the organ because if they have the organ for a long time and it begins to shut down they
will have to go back on the organ donation list. The payment for organs can also create a larger
issue with the black market. If everyone eligible to be an organ donor actually had their organs
donated, the shortage of organs would be greatly diminished. Blood donation are very similar as
well because many people do not even try to donate blood due to a fear of needles.
By allowing people to sell their organs, we are putting a monetary price on human life, which
goes against Kantian ideals. The sale of human organs diminishes human dignity because it is
putting a value on human organs (Cohen 48). The sale of organs will allow for people who are
not at the top of the donor list to receive an organ due to the ability of a person to have a direct
donation to a person.

In the case of the young man that came into the hospital with a massive brain injury and his parents
signed paperwork stating they were against donating his organs, even though the young man was an
organ donor but his signature was not legible, I feel like the outcome should have been more of a
positive one. When someone signs up to be an organ donor that means they want to give the gift of
life to someone else. There is such a huge shortage of organs/ tissue in the United States that it
shouldn't matter if you're an organ donor or not, if your body no longer needs them then they should

Have you ever wanted something so badly? You think about it everyday and every minute. What
if your want was vital? What if your want was actually something you needed to survive? But you
can't get it. Why? Because there are thousands of other people on the same list waiting for their
turn, just like you. But waiting for what exactly? An organ. This is how thousands of Americans
feel daily being on the donation list. Sadly many people die daily and they are buried with their
organs. These organs are useful, and could save many lives. You could be saving lives after you die.

Many people are desperately waiting for a call that can save their lives. People all over America
are in need of organs just like those right here in the state of New York. We can all help these
people in one way or another. Well first off I would like to begin by telling you all, what exactly
organ donation is. According to Medlineplus.gov, Organ donation takes healthy organs and tissues
from one person for transplantation into another. Experts say that the organs from one donor can
save or help as many as 50 people.Most organ and tissue donations occur after the donor has died.
But some organs and tissues can be donated while the donor is alive. Imagine that! You can

donor list are in need of an organ and are depending on it for survival. Some patients are on the list
for weeks, months, even years with sno match. Comparatively, 6,316 people die every hour with
viable organs that can be used. Doctors are not legally allowed to use these organs unless given
consent by only the patient before death. If all U.S. citizens donated their organs, transplantations
could occur and save thousands of lives each year. Organ donation should be required in the
United States because of the significant number of lives that could be saved everyday. The

in order to increase efficiency within the body. Our specialized organs give us the ability to
function and live. If just one out of our 78 organ is no longer able to perform its necessary action,

organ donors and act upon their decision to donate. Central Idea: Becoming an organ donor gives
transplant recipients the gift of life and there are unnecessary barriers and misconceptions keeping
people from becoming donors. Method of Organization: Problem–Cause–Solution Introduction
"6,935 people are dying because they had to wait. That's 19 people dying per day for an entire
year"(Barry). That's nearly 7,000 lives; which is equivalent to to almost 25% of the current
undergraduate body here at UW–Madison. According to Dr. Chris Barry, a transplant surgeon and
researcher at the University of Rochester Medical Center, "19 people die per day on the organ
donor recipient list because there aren't enough people signing their organ donor consent forms". He
proposes that we need to increase people's knowledge and tear down the myths and barriers of organ
donation to facilitate their decision to donate.
I am a registered organ donor myself and have researched numerous scholarly articles, testimonies,
and academic journals in the process of developing this speech.
Today I'd like to discuss the need for organ donors across the United States, why the barriers that
prevent people from signing up are false or misunderstood, and then show you how to become an
