OF PUBLICATION
DISSERTATION
JOURNALS
TOOLS FOR
PRODUCTIVITY
3. What is so important
about publishing?
• To communicate our work to our peers
• To collaborate with others
• Document our research
• To land a job
• To attain tenure
4. Tenure expectations
• Varies by discipline
• Varies by department
• ask!
• aim high, be marketable
• start immediately
7. What to do with the
Dissertation?
• Cut out the dissertation, editors do not need
to see your research
• Tell a story instead of documenting the
conversation
• Look at your bookshelf for places likely to
publish your work
8. Publishing in a Journal
• Often quicker than monograph
• More concise for our work
• Sometimes preferred in particular fields
over books
9. Publishing in a Journal
• Appropriate? Consider the following:
• Field & Approach
• Blind review
• Fees? (avoid vanity pubs)
• Citation index
• Rejection rate
10. Publishing in a Journal
• Do your homework - what do they publish.
• Follow the submissions guide for authors.
• Submit your article to only journal at a
time! Work on those other publications
while you wait.
11. Article Rejected?
• Do not despair!
• Read comments
• Submit immediatelyjournal
almost
to another
• Revise for submission
elsewhere
• Recycle into another project
12. Possible Publishing
Cycle
• Research
• Conference
presentations
• Journal article(s)
• Book / Major grant
13. Cover Letter to Editors
• Be brief, be formal
• State it is original, previously unpublished not under
concurrent review
• Use graphics very sparingly / Address any copyrighted
material you use
• Indicate some familiarity with the journal/press
• Indicate qualifications / previous publications / open to
editorial changes
14. 3 stage pipeline
• Aim for:
• one item started
• one item under review
• one item in press
15. Strategies
• MAKE TIME
• daily writing will get you published as
much as 80% faster
• all-nighters and binge writing are a thing
of the past, get used to it.
16. Common Obstacles
• Self-Censoring
• Fear of failing
• Perfectionism
• Procrastination

17. Practical Approach
• Schedule writing sessions
• 5-6 times a week, at least for an hour
• Be strict with yourself
• Listen to your thoughts
• Pay attention to negativity
• Try to be positive
18. Generative Writing
• Think about your subject
• Shut off the inner critic
• Write for 10 minute bursts without stopping
• Write fast if you can, but go slow when
thinking of purpose, direction, audience
