3. 3. The pollen tube contains two sperm
cells. The sperm cell is the male sex cell.
4. 4. One sperm cell unites with the egg cell
from the ovule to form a fertilized egg
called a zygote. This union of two cells is
known as fertilization.
5. 5. The other sperm cell meets with a
special cell at the ovule to form the
endosperm. This becomes the stored
food tissue of the seed. It is used by the
seed as it germinates.
6. 6. The ovule forms the seed. It contains
the stored food and the new plant.
7. The ovary grows in size as the
seed inside it grows. A plant with
eights ovules in it before
fertilization develops into a fruit
with the same number of seeds
after fertilization.
