Ogden, UT (PRWEB) May 23, 2014 -- Many dental patients considering composite or porcelain veneers need clarification on the distinctions between the two. Dr. Jim Ellis, DDS, a leading Ogden dentist, prefers that his patients understand the differences as well as all the advantages and potential drawbacks of composite and porcelain veneers before they make any decisions. Considered an alternative to dental crowns, which tend to be more expensive and cover the entire tooth, veneers are comprised of extremely thin porcelain or plastic, which are applied to the front of the tooth with a dental adhesive. Veneers are used to correct misshapen, crooked, or discolored teeth as well as wide gaps and pitted or chipped teeth. Dental patients have a choice between porcelain and composite veneers. The porcelain veneer application usually takes two dental visits and requires the use of a local anesthetic. The veneers are crafted especially for a patient’s smile, and the dentist will need to remove a bit of the tooth enamel—not much, though, because porcelain veneers are so thin (the thinnest, Lumineer Veneers, are .2 millimeters thick). On the first of two visits for porcelain veneers, the dentist first utilizes a local anesthetic, then gently removes enamel from the teeth in order for the teeth to be more suitable for the bonding process. He or she will then take an impression of the teeth, and a laboratory will craft the veneers for the patient’s mouth exclusively. Composite veneers, on the other hand, take only one office visit to apply, and no anesthetic is needed. Composite veneers are directly applied to the teeth with a bonding and enamel mix in one visit. Though composite veneers are less expensive than porcelain veneers because application only takes one visit, they are not as stain-resistant as porcelain veneers. About Dr. Jim Ellis, D.D.S.
