FP English – Flexible and Powerful

Lesson 04 –I am a housemaid!

Mini story

Hi, there! How do you do? My name is Jessica Flores and I’m a
housemaid!
In this lesson you will know a little bit about my routine and housework.
On Mondays, I sweep the floor, dust the furniture and straighten up the
living room. On Tuesdays, I cook: I make breakfast, lunch and dinner. After
that, I do the dishes and clean up the kitchen and the dining room. On
Wednesdays, I do the laundry and straighten up the bedrooms. On
Thursdays, I take the garbage out and mop the floor. On Fridays, I clean
the bathroom, garage and basement. I also make the bed and set the table
for dinner. On Saturdays, I go to the mall with my husband and kids to
watch a movie, and last but not least, on Sundays, I stay home, read a
book, wash my car and spend time with my family.

       SIMPLE PRESENT

           - DO

When we want to make a question in the simple present tense, to talk about I, YOU, WE, THEY
we have to use the auxiliary verb DO:
Quando queremos fazer uma pergunta no Simple Present para falar de I, YOU, WE, THEY,
temos que usar o verbo auxiliar DO para fazê-lo:

Do you like to go out?
                                              (Você gosta de sair?)

There are two ways of answering this question:
Há duas maneiras de responder essa pergunta:

           a) Short answer (resposta curta)
              Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.

           b) Long answer (resposta longa)
Yes, I like to go out. / No, I don’t like to go out.

Notice that we do not repeat “do” in affirmative sentences.
Perceba que não inserimos/repetimos o “do” em frases afirmativas - LONGAS.

Yes, I like to go out.
But we insert “don’t” in negative sentences.
Mas inserimos “don’t” em frases negativas.
No, I don’t like to go out.

THIRD PERSON
(Terceira pessoa)

In present tenses, when we have to make a question about a Third person (he, she and it), we
must use the auxiliary verb DOES to make it.

No presente, quando fazemos uma pergunta sobre uma Terceira pessoa (he, she and it),
devemos usar o verbo auxiliar DOES para fazê-la.

Example:

DOES she study English? (Ela estuda inglês?)
DOES she go to college every day? (Ela vai para a faculdade todos os dias?)

When we answer such questions, we must follow the pattern:
Quando respondemos tais perguntas, devemos seguir o padrão:

Does she study English? Yes, she does.

Does she go to school? No, she doesn’t.

However, when we give LONG ANSWERS, we have to use the following structure:
Porém, quando damos RESPOSTAS LONGAS, temos que usar a seguinte estrutura:

Does she answer the phone? Yes, she answers the phone.
Ela atende o telefone? Sim, ela atende o telefone.

In affirmative sentences, we change the verb. Usually we add “S” at its end.
Em frases afirmativas, nós mudamos o verbo. Geralmente acrescentamos o “S” ao final dele.

                      Yes, she answers the phone.
On the other hand, when we give a NEGATIVE answer, we do not change the verb.
Por outro lado, quando damos uma resposta NEGATIVA, nós não mudamos o verbo.

Does he answer the phone? No, he doesn’t answer the phone.

Be attentive!
(fique atento!)

When there are two verbs separated by “to”, only the first verb will be changed.

Does she like to study? Yes, she likes to study. / No, she doesn’t like to study.
