Once there lived a Zen master in a Buddhist monastery near a town.
One day one of his disciples asked him, “Master what is the essence of
education?”
The Zen master smiled and said, “Son, one day you will know about it
yourself.”
A few days passed and one night, the Zen master gave a book to his disciple.
He told the disciple, “Son, take this book and put it on the chair in my room.”
从前,在一个城镇附近的佛教寺院里住着一位禅师。有一天,他的一个弟子问他:
“师父,教育的本质是什么?”禅师笑道:“小子,总有一天你会知道的。”几天过去
了,一个晚上,禅师给了弟子一本书。 他对门徒说:“孩子,把这本书拿去,放在我
房间的椅子上。”

The disciple took the book and walked towards the Zen master’s
room.
It was quite dark inside the room. There was only a little diffused
light entering the room from the outside. The disciple entered the
room with the book. He got a shock and he immediately ran out of
the room trembling with fear. He went to seek out the Zen master.
弟子拿着书,往禅师的房间走去。房间里很黑。 只有一点漫射光从外面进
入房间。 徒弟提着书进了屋。 他吓了一跳,吓得浑身发抖,立即跑出了房
间。 他去找禅师。

The Zen master asked, “What happened, son? Why are you so
scared?”
The disciple said, “Master, there is a snake in your room. As soon
as I entered the room, I saw the snake coiled up a little distance
from the chair. I dared not go further because the snake would bite
me. So, I ran out as fast as I could to tell you.”
禅师问道:“小子,怎么了? 你为什么这么害怕?弟子说:“师父,您房
中有蛇。 一进屋,就看到蛇盘绕在离椅子不远的地方。 我不敢再往前
走,因为蛇会咬我。 所以,我以最快的速度跑出去告诉你。”

The Zen master calmly said, “Son, it must be an illusion.
From where could the snake come to enter into my room?
Now, you have to go to the room again. If you still have fear
because of the illusion, I will give you a mantra to recite as
you enter the room.”
“Alright, Master,” the disciple said.
” 禅师平静道:“公子,这一定是幻觉。 蛇会从哪里进入我的房间?
现在,你必须再次去房间。 如果你还因为幻觉而害怕,我就给你一
张真言,让你在进屋的时候念诵。”“好的,师尊。”弟子说道。

The Zen master continued, “If there is a snake in the room,
it will go away immediately upon hearing the mantra you
recite.”
After saying this, the Zen master gave a mantra and also a
string of beads to his disciple to use in his mantra
recitation.
The disciple then again went into the room chanting the
mantra with the aid of his beads.
禅师继续说:“如果房间里有蛇,听到你念的咒语,它会立刻跑掉。”说
完,禅师就给弟子一张真言和一串佛珠,让弟子念咒时用。弟子又进
屋,持念珠念咒。

The chanting of the mantra did not chase the snake
away. To the disciple’s horror, he found that the snake
was still there, coiled up as before, remaining so still.
The disciple came out of the room in fear and he again
went to see the Zen master.
“The snake is still there,” the disciple told the master.
“The mantra had no effect on the snake.”
咒语的念诵并没有将蛇赶走。 令弟子惊恐的是,他发现那条蛇还在那
里,像以前一样盘绕起来,一动不动。弟子惊恐出房,又去见禅师。
“蛇还在,”弟子告诉师父。 “咒语对蛇没有影响。”

“Don’t worry, son,” the Zen master told the disciple. Then the Zen
master gave the disciple a lighted lamp.
“Take this lamp there,” the master told the disciple. “If there is a
snake in the room, it will definitely drive the snake away upon seeing
the light from the lamp.”
Very obediently, the disciple went to the room again with his lighted
lamp.
禅师对弟子说:“孩子,别担心。”然后禅师给了弟子一盏点着的灯。
它看到灯火,一定会把蛇赶走的。”
弟子很是听话,提着灯又往房里走去。

As soon as he entered the room, the disciple saw that there
was no snake at all. He found that it was just a big rope
coiled up lying there on the floor. It looked like a snake in the
dark place. The disciple heaved a great sigh of relief. All his
fear disappeared. He had mistaken a heap of coiled rope for
a snake. The disciple happily went forward and placed the
book on the chair.
一进屋,那弟子一看,根本没有蛇。 他发现那只是一根大绳子,盘绕在地
板上。 它在黑暗的地方看起来像一条蛇。 弟子大大的松了一口气。 他所
有的恐惧都消失了。 他把一堆盘绕的绳子误认为是一条蛇。 弟子高兴的上
前,将书放在了椅子上。

He then went to see the Zen master again. He said to the master,
“There was no snake! It was a piece of rope. In the dark I mistook it
for a snake!”
The Zen master smiled and said, “Son, this is the answer to your
question which you asked me a few days ago. Just like the rope you
mistook for a snake, the whole world is fooled and lost in a deep
web of illusions.
然后他又去见了禅师。 他对师父说:“没有蛇! 那是一根绳子。 在
黑暗中我把它误认为是一条蛇!””禅师笑道:“公子,这就是你几天
前问我的问题的答案。 就像你误以为是蛇的绳子一样,整个世界都
被愚弄并迷失在一张错觉的深网中。

People are ignorant as to the reality of things. They
suffer because of this ignorance, not knowing things as
they truly are. They are trapped in the defilements of
greed, hatred and delusion …and this causes people to
suffer so much.
人们对事物的真实性一无所知。 他们因为无知而受苦,不了
解事物的真实面目。 他们被困在贪、嗔、痴的烦恼中……这
使人们遭受如此多的痛苦。

It is only by the light of Dhamma education can
ignorance and illusions be removed. Only then can
sorrow and suffering cease. So you see, the essence of
education, the most important of which is Dhamma
education, is to provide the knowledge to know the
Truth of all things in nature.”
只有通过佛法教育之光,才能消除无明和幻觉。 只有这样,
悲伤和痛苦才能停止。 所以你看,教育的本质,其中最重要
的是佛法教育,是提供知识以了解自然界万物的真相。”

1 Has overcome to a great extent unwholesome desire, greed and clinging.
在很大程度上已经克服了不善的欲望、贪婪和执着。
2 Has overcome to a great extent anger, ill-will, enmity and hatred.
在很大程度上克服了愤怒、恶意、敌意和仇恨。
3 Has overcome to a great extent delusion, the ego-self, pride and conceit.
在很大程度上克服了无明、自我、自我中心和我慢。
4 Understands Nature, Nature’s Laws and things as they truly are.

5 Is morally good, righteous & would not do things that harm himself or others.
品行端正,为人正直,不会做出伤害自己或他人的事情。

  • 7. 7 The chanting of the mantra did not chase the snake away. To the disciple’s horror, he found that the snake was still there, coiled up as before, remaining so still. The disciple came out of the room in fear and he again went to see the Zen master. “The snake is still there,” the disciple told the master. “The mantra had no effect on the snake.” 咒语的念诵并没有将蛇赶走。 令弟子惊恐的是,他发现那条蛇还在那 里,像以前一样盘绕起来,一动不动。弟子惊恐出房,又去见禅师。 “蛇还在,”弟子告诉师父。 “咒语对蛇没有影响。”
  • 8. 8 “Don’t worry, son,” the Zen master told the disciple. Then the Zen master gave the disciple a lighted lamp. “Take this lamp there,” the master told the disciple. “If there is a snake in the room, it will definitely drive the snake away upon seeing the light from the lamp.” Very obediently, the disciple went to the room again with his lighted lamp. 禅师对弟子说:“孩子,别担心。”然后禅师给了弟子一盏点着的灯。 它看到灯火,一定会把蛇赶走的。” 弟子很是听话,提着灯又往房里走去。
  • 9. 9 As soon as he entered the room, the disciple saw that there was no snake at all. He found that it was just a big rope coiled up lying there on the floor. It looked like a snake in the dark place. The disciple heaved a great sigh of relief. All his fear disappeared. He had mistaken a heap of coiled rope for a snake. In the dark I mistook it for a snake!” The Zen master smiled and said, “Son, this is the answer to your question which you asked me a few days ago.
