- Feeling incredibly close to God at the moment because I have been sitting here going ‘Oh God’ please let me remember my talk, please let me look thin Today I will refer a lot to God but I am really talking about any higher being, any religion. So I am really curious to have you ask yourselves some questions today.. Can someone please explain to me how it is that you amazing individuals can cope to take a big swollen abscess and lance it open with a scapel and squeeze pus out, how you can bear to intubate a difficult airway, drill into people’s bones to give access, God knows no one loves to remove foreign objects from an anus especially like babooshka dolls more than the SMACC Crowd,, you will put a glove on and shove your hand basically anywhere including in a chest cavity and massage someone’s heart, you will stop a heart, start a heart, put someone on ECMO but if a patient asks you about your spiritual beliefs or has the audacity to pray with them you all freak out and say ‘ ain’t nobody got time for that’ you call a spiritual code and ask for a priest stat…. Why? Why is religion and spiritually so frightening to you? Why is it that if a friend/colleague/family member has a personal crisis and you can cope if they start drinking to manage their stress, we understand if they start taking drugs to cope, we are empathetic, if they identify as having depression, anxiety if they need medication we have no problems hey we will go as far as to prescribe it but what if they tell us they have gone back to Church or Temple or Prayer. Awkward we got nothing to say!!
- Actually we all are if we are talking generally. Religion and spiritiually have been around since the beginning of time. I am because I am human Because when people ask Why? When they ask you to pray or where people may go when they die they are asking for a sound board I have excelled at one thing and one thing only in my life.. You see I have always been genetically disadvantaged because I have red hair but there s one thing I have never lost in this world..no one has EVER out Catholic’d me EVER.
- Most of us who had any sort of religious or spiritual background have what's called COF. Crisis Orientated Faith where we do not believe in any higher being and we pay no attention to our existential life until we are in crisis, Then when something terrible happens we all of a sudden have this close affiliation with the higher being and we beg, negotiate and sell our soul if only we can not have the pain, the loss, the fear. If you don’t understand how you could be so desperate than maybe you are incredibly resilient, or maybe you have never known fear...Three of the four times I have prayed the hardest I was in the ED within 30 minutes – miscarriage, Noah and Paul Cancer Besides I am an extrovert I don’t like doing to the movies on my own so why the hell would I want to go around the Universe in the difficult times in my life ?
