FASCISM OR TOTALITARISM? • Totalitariansim = Dictatorship • Most fascist states are ruled by a dictator • Not all dictators are fascist Nazism *These theories, specifically Communism and Fascism, are completely different theories that are bitterly opposed; however they exhibit the same behavior Totalitarianism Communism Fascism
- 4. WHERE DOES IT COME FROM? • Italy = 1st fascist state (Mussolini) • Comes from latin • “Fascis” – Ancient Roman symbol of STRENGTH, UNITY, and GOVERNMENTAL AUTHORITY • Literally, bundle (Get it?)

CHARACTERISTICS • Ultra-nationalistic • Ethnic and physical superiority of the party in power • Single, charismatic leader • Absolute national unity • The state first, over all else. • Masters of manipulation • Mass media • Private economic goals not important • Hate other forms of government • Especially communism (interesting, very interesting…) • Military expansion & Police State
