3. Prophets & Propheteering
• What was the job of a Jewish prophet?
• What would be the response of the listener to
their message?
• What were some different methods of
communication that prophets used?
• If prophets bring unpopular but needed
corrective criticism to the hearer, what are
some examples of “prophetic voices” God has
placed around you?
4. What was going on in Judah during
this time?
• 2 Kings 18:9-14
• 2 Kings 18:17-27
• 2 Kings 19:5-10
• 2 Kings 19:20, 32-37
• 2 Kings 20
5. The Context for Isaiah 61
• In Isaiah 59 it talks about the sins of the hearer,
probably thinking of the nation of Israel who had
abandon worshipping God (justice, light, peace)
for idols (selfishness, darkness, & violence) but
gives hope for the repentant that Jerusalem may
be rebuilt
• In Isaiah 60 we get a view of the new Jerusalem,
that surely informed John’s Revelations 21-22
New Jerusalem. This vision is so idealic that it is
either hyperbole or an “eternity” version of the
New Jerusalem.
6. Isaiah 61
• I think Isaiah 61 gives us a building plans for
the new Jerusalem of time or of this world
• Continually reinforced throughout Isaiah is the
concept that everything good and great about
Israel comes from their humble reliance on
God and as they become arrogant and self-
sufficient they suffer the consequences of
those actions.
• Read Isaiah 61:1-3
7. Unpacking Isaiah 61
• Is the Spirit of the Sovereign Lord on us?
• Has he anointed/chosen us for these tasks?
8. Unpacking Isaiah 61:1-2
• What is good news to the poor or those in
want?
• How are the brokenhearted bound up?
• How are captives freed?
• How are prisoners released from darkness?
• How are those in mourning & grieving
comforted?
9. Unpacking Isaiah 61:3
• We are to give them:
• A crown of beauty instead of ashes
• The oil of gladness instead of mourning
• A garment of praise instead of a spirit of
despair
• How can we do this?
