Today with the increased competition and attention diffusion, it is becoming much harder to be a consumer web startups. And in order to win, the founders need to make all the right bets, all the time, or else they will find themselves on road to nowhere.

  • Great deck and love the Evan analogy that web = owning an island vs. mobile = renting land. This is very true and all the more reason to focus on simplicity and customer delight - core canons for today's entrepreneur although made more difficult given the low costs of experimentation for all the reasons you identify here. Equal parts fun and terrifying.

  • I agree with Bojan's observations. Much has changed. But also, to scale one does need money - can't exactly have a nationwide effort without hiring more people, putting butts in plane seats to get the word out etc. Social media penetration takes time too.... right ?
