Small-Group Teaching,[object Object],Inclusive Curriculum Design,[object Object]
By the end of this session, you will have:,[object Object],identified and discussed characteristics of small group teaching, within your own subject;,[object Object],identified some common problems associated with small-group teaching and evaluated some potential tutor interventions.,[object Object],Session learning outcomes,[object Object]
Introduction & Context,[object Object],Disciplinary Contexts,[object Object],Problems in small-group teaching,[object Object],Teaching through discussion,[object Object],Review,[object Object],Session overview,[object Object]
Issues of students working in groups together on assessed tasks, and theories of group formation, team roles etc.,[object Object],but see http://www.learnhighergroupwork.com/,[object Object],What we are specifically not engaging with in this session…,[object Object]
Types/’genres’ include:,[object Object], ‘tutorials’, ‘seminars’, ‘labs’, ‘fieldwork’, ‘online discussion groups’, Problem-based learning (PBL) groups, action learning sets, workshops, syndicates…,[object Object],Sizes of ‘small’ groups can vary considerably,[object Object],Purpose and role may vary considerably,[object Object],Small Group Teaching - Context,[object Object]
In comparison to large-group teaching, small group teaching offers more opportunity for interaction and engagement:,[object Object],tutor-student interaction,[object Object],student-student interaction,[object Object],Learning in a social context,[object Object],Context – educational role,[object Object]
Favoured for developing higher order attributes:,[object Object],Problem solving,[object Object],Critical thinking,[object Object],Self-Awareness,[object Object],‘Functioning’ rather than ‘Declarative’ knowledge (Biggs & Tang, 2007),[object Object],Particularly through:,[object Object],Discussion,[object Object],Practical application,[object Object],Relation to real-world events & experiences,[object Object],Context - educational role,[object Object]
Size of group,[object Object],Location, room, layout, furniture, equipment,[object Object],Characteristics and diversity of group,[object Object],Resource & staffing issues to address,[object Object],Contextual factors,[object Object]
We will divide into table groups roughly organised by discipline/school/professional area,[object Object],Suggested: ,[object Object],EDT & Technology,[object Object],Social Science & Humanities,[object Object],Management,[object Object], Life Sciences,[object Object], ‘Other SLED/LSS/SU’,[object Object],Disciplinary contexts,[object Object]
In those groups,[object Object],Discuss and list the variety of small-group teaching contexts in your areas,[object Object],Within these different contexts are there typical ‘ways of practicing’? If so, what are they? ,[object Object],Are you aware of an examples of what you would consider to be innovative small-group teaching practice in your work contexts?,[object Object],What are the typical issues or challenges associated with small-group teaching in your context?,[object Object],Disciplinary contexts,[object Object]
Feedback from each group & opportunities for questions,[object Object],Disciplinary context ,[object Object]
teacher lectures rather than conducts discussion,[object Object],teacher talks too much,[object Object],difficult encouraging students to talk,[object Object],discussion limited to responses to tutor questions,[object Object],if preparation is required, student don’t do it,[object Object],one student too dominant/ too quiet,[object Object],student focus is on solutions/answers more than complexity,[object Object],Problems in Small-Group Teaching (Ramsden, 2003: 149),[object Object]
Teaching & Learning Through Critical Discussion (Garrison & Archer, 2000),[object Object],Allows students to listen, integrate new ideas, critique.,[object Object],Discussion phases:,[object Object],Early – identifying issues,[object Object],Middle – searching for resolution,[object Object],Late – evaluating conclusions,[object Object]
Discussion develops higher thinking skills, in an environment where students can relate to interests and experiences - links ‘cognitive’ and ‘affective’ learning outcomes,[object Object],“A distinct shift from the excessively teacher-centred approach often associated with the lecture.”,[object Object],Critical Discussion (Garrison & Archer, 2000),[object Object]
Jaques(2000) identifies three main purposes of small group teaching:,[object Object],Organisation of thinking, comparing ideas and interpretations with each other, forming understanding of a subject.,[object Object],Extrinsic training opportunities: team building, oral skills, negotiating, persuading and so on.,[object Object],Monitoring of own study; gaining self-directedness and independence from tutors.,[object Object],Inclusive learning and teaching in small groups,[object Object]
Do you think there are other purposes?,[object Object],What is the balance of priorities in this for you?,[object Object],How does this relate to issues of inclusion for all students?,[object Object],What are the most likely areas of difficulty for teaching diverse groups?,[object Object],How can you positively use differences in your groups to enrich the experience for all?,[object Object],Inclusivity in small groups,[object Object]
Ensuring student integration and identity.,[object Object],Encouraging intercultural competence (diminishes cultural/racial/gender stereotyping etc).,[object Object],Develops student self-directedness (creating learners that can explore concepts more fully, find their own material, develop their own critical stance, etc). (Grace and Gravestock, 2009),[object Object],How small group teaching can be inclusive,[object Object]
What do I want my students to learn in this session?,[object Object],What learning outcomes will I therefore write?,[object Object],What activities will I use to achieve these ends?,[object Object],How will this relate to assessment?,[object Object],How does this fit into the overall scheme of the programme for the students?,[object Object],Some considerations on planning inclusive small group sessions:,[object Object]
Do I know who my students are?,[object Object],How large/small is the group?,[object Object],How long do I have to run the session?,[object Object],What restrictions are imposed by the physical space?,[object Object],What resources do I need to run the session?,[object Object],Some considerations cont.,[object Object]
Is my plan for the session suitable for all students in the group?,[object Object],Do I need to make any contingency/alternative arrangement for any member of the the group?,[object Object],Are there any formal requirements that I need to adhere to (evaluation of session etc.) (adapted from Grace and Gravestock, 2009).,[object Object],Some considerations cont.,[object Object]
e.g. Race, 2007: 151-154,[object Object],Rounds,[object Object],Buzz groups,[object Object],Snowballing,[object Object],Pyramiding,[object Object],Fishbowls,[object Object],Brainstorming,[object Object],Pair Dialogues,[object Object],Leave the room,[object Object],(See Habeshaw, Habeshaw, and Gibbs, 1984),[object Object],Techniques for promoting interaction,[object Object]
“At this point it is usual to provide a list of recipes designed to overcome these familiar difficulties. There are many effective techniques…But none of them will succeed for long unless you clearly understand the reasons for the problems. Just for now, forget about detailed solutions: think about what effective teaching consists of and how you would try to implement its prescriptions…”,[object Object],Solutions to the problems? (Ramsden, 2003: 149-151) ,[object Object]
Follow-up on resources around large & small group teaching.,[object Object],Think about what ‘effective teaching’ might be in these different contexts.,[object Object],Are there some common principles for effective teaching (e.g. Ramsden, 2003: 93-99),[object Object],Looking ahead to next learning set ,[object Object]
Biggs and Tang (2007: 105):,[object Object], “It helps to think of lectures and tutorials as situations, in which a range of teaching/learning activities can take place, rather than prescriptions for a manner of teaching.”,[object Object],Review,[object Object]
Biggs. J. and Tang, C (2007) Teaching for Quality Learning at University, Third Edition, Maidenhead, Open University Press.,[object Object],Garrison, D.R. & Archer, W. (2000) A Transactional Perspective on Teaching and Learning, Oxford, Pergamon.,[object Object],Grace, S. and Gravestock, P. (2009) Inclusion and Diversity. Routledge.
