But this came at the price of added development and infrastructure complexity. Serverless and FaaS seem to be the next disruption, they are the logical evolution trying to address some of the inherent technology complexity we are currently faced when building cloud native apps. FaaS frameworks are currently popping up like mushrooms: Knative, Kubeless, OpenFn, Fission, OpenFaas or Open Whisk are just a few to name. But which one of these is safe to pick and use in your next project? Let's find out. This session will start off by briefly explaining the essence of Serverless application architecture. We will then define a criteria catalog for FaaS frameworks and continue by comparing and showcasing the most promising ones.

A hands-on guide to deploying applications in Rancher's new Kubernetes environments Over the last few months our team at Rancher Labs has been adding support for Kubernetes natively within Rancher. Our implementation of Kubernetes takes advantage of Rancher’s platform orchestration, simple UI, access control, networking and storage capabilities to deliver simple to deploy Kubernetes clusters for managing applications. In our February meetup we introduced this new support, and discussed how these Kubernetes environments compare with our native Docker environments and help you understand when and how each can be used to power your containers. Our new support for Kubernetes will be available in Rancher in our next major release in March. The Oracle Cloud allows to build and configure various infrastructure resources. But you won't get far by just using "click acrobatics" via Web Console, especially if you want to build several similar and complex environments. A mouse click cannot be saved just like that. Oracle offers several API's to create and manage objects in OCI, e.g. Oracle OCI commandline utility, OCI SDK, Terraform Provider etc. This presentation will explain how to implement Infrastructure as Code in OCI using Terraform and the Oracle Terraform Provider. Using a training environment as an example, it will be shown how to build components with Terraform Server, databases and network components and how to scale them in terms of resources or number.

Much has been written about how to write Microservices, but not enough about how to effectively deploy and manage them. Microservices architecture multiplies the number of deployables IT has to manage by at least 10x. In that world, tooling to manage cloud deployments and related infrastructure becames essential for success. Terraform and Docker are increasingly being leveraged to facilitate microservice environments. Terraform has become becoming the leading coding framework for building and managing change in cloud environments. Attendees will learn best practices for deploying and managing microservices in production. We will leverage true "infrastructure as code" using Terraform. That code is easily re-used and make changes easy. That code makes it easy to deploy and scale software including Docker images. You will learn not only how to establish that environment initially, but how changes can be effectively managed. I'll cover best practices and common mistakes along the way. AWS will be used as the cloud provider, but Terraform operates seamlessly on other cloud environments as well. This session is targeted at architects and team leads. This session is intended to be platform-generic.

This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
