Characteristics of a Good Communicator
Characteristics of a Good Communicator
1. Proactive and takes responsibility
2. Begins with the end in mind and decides the outcome of the discussion first
3. Puts first things first as prioritizing is important in the preparation of the discussion
4. Thinks Win/Win and seeks solutions so everyone wins
5. Seeks to first listen and then understand
6. Creates a co-operative environment where people can “speak out”
7. Constantly improves himself by learning from every discussion

Tips for Effective Communication
Stop Talking
› You cannot listen when you are
talking.
› Consciously focus your attention on
the speaker
Put the Speaker at Ease
› Relax, smile, look at the speaker and
help that person feel free to talk.
› Look and act interested.
Understand Completely
› Know exactly what the other person
says.
› A good listener does not assume he
understands the other person.
› You should not express your views
until you have summarized the
speaker's message to his satisfaction.
Pay Attention to Body Language
› Pay attention to the nonverbal
language of physical gestures, facial
expressions, tone of voice, and body
posture.
Listen For Implied Meaning
› Ask questions to clarify the meaning
of words and the feelings involved, or
ask the speaker to enlarge on the
statement.
Concentrate on "Hidden" Emotional Meanings
› What are the real feelings behind the
words?
› What is the tone of voice saying?
› What does the emphasis on certain
words mean?
Be Patient
› Don't interrupt the speaker.
› This is disrespectful and suggests you
want to talk instead of listen.
Hold Your Temper
› Try to keep your own emotions from
interfering with your communication
efficiency.
› When emotions are high, there is a
tendency to tune out the speaker,
become defensive, or want to give
advice.
Empathize with the Speaker
› Try to "place yourself in the other
person’s shoes" so you can feel what
that person is feeling and understand
the point of view the speaker is trying
to convey.

  • 4. Stop Talking › You cannot listen when you are talking. › Consciously focus your attention on the speaker
  • 5. Put the Speaker at Ease › Relax, smile, look at the speaker and help that person feel free to talk. › Look and act interested.
  • 6. Understand Completely › Know exactly what the other person says. › A good listener does not assume he understands the other person. › You should not express your views until you have summarized the speaker's message to his satisfaction.
  • 7. Pay Attention to Body Language › Pay attention to the nonverbal language of physical gestures, facial expressions, tone of voice, and body posture.
  • 8. Listen For Implied Meaning › Ask questions to clarify the meaning of words and the feelings involved, or ask the speaker to enlarge on the statement.
  • 9. Concentrate on "Hidden" Emotional Meanings › What are the real feelings behind the words? › What is the tone of voice saying? › What does the emphasis on certain words mean?
  • 10. Be Patient › Don't interrupt the speaker. › This is disrespectful and suggests you want to talk instead of listen.
  • 11. Hold Your Temper › Try to keep your own emotions from interfering with your communication efficiency. › When emotions are high, there is a tendency to tune out the speaker, become defensive, or want to give advice.
  • 12. Empathize with the Speaker › Try to "place yourself in the other person’s shoes" so you can feel what that person is feeling and understand the point of view the speaker is trying to convey.
