Before we can comprehend digital imaging software, we have to understand how graphics are created and the characteristics of the most common file types. While there may well be hundreds of different graphic file formats, we are going to discuss the most common types. There will also be several proprietary (native, default) file formats that may apply—depending on the software being used. Example: .psd—Photoshop document.

This image was saved in four different file formats. Can you tell the difference? The top right file is a gif—notice the difference in the sky color. Gifs can only handle 256 colors. The other file formats can handle 16 million.
