IELTS Gestioni e Management Roma 2011

Editor's Notes

  1. IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It is designed to assess the English language ability of people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication. IELTS is the original four-skills English language test measuring a candidate’s ability to communicate in English using all four language skills – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. SETS A VARIETY OF TASKS As a language test of communication, it sets a variety of tasks which test different communicative language skills and simulates real life contexts. COMPLETE WHOLE TEXTS The tasks use complete whole texts , not isolated individual questions – so that candidates are required to engage with language on a basic level , for example recognising the general purpose of a text as well as detailed information.

  3. Fastest growing English test in the world. 57,000 in 2000; 1.4 million in 2009.
  4. IELTS is recognised as a test of international English … what do we mean by this? IELTS is the product of a unique international partnership : British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia – manage the test administration, quality and security control, the marketing, the training of examiners and clerical markers The University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations department – manage the production of the question papers and their distribution The 3 partners also jointly sponsor IELTS research projects. TEST PRODUCTION Another aspect of the international nature of IELTS is its global production – there are more than 60 writers producing material for IELTS with teams based in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand Plans are in place to expand to the USA in the near future, to include item writing teams. TEST CONTENT - source of material Sources of material are also international – publications from all over the English speaking world are used as well as the Worldwideweb. In addition, there must be no cultural or linguistic bias in terms of content, vocabulary, grammar. The focus is on language areas common to all varieties of English. Test delivery It is also international in terms of Test delivery – available worldwide – in around 150 countries.
  5. What it’s not : It’s not a test of grammatical knowledge of the language – it’s the candidate’s ability to use the language. Equally it is not a test of study skills – no claim is made as to a candidate’s overall potential to study. Nor is it a test of a particular topic – each component of the IELTS exam contains a wide range of topics, to ensure that there is no bias against or for candidates in any aspect. IELTS encourages, reflects and respects international diversity and is fair to anyone who sites the test, regardless of nationality, background, gender or lifestyle. International teams of writers contribute to IELTS test materials and we invest in on-going research to ensure that IELTS remains fair and unbiased – wherever and whenever a candidate sits the test.
  6. Four testing modules for each language proficiency. Band score for each, and total score. Note the scores most frequently used by insitutions. There are also half band scores, eg. 6.5., 7.5. More extensive explanation of the bands is in your handout. Show it.

  9. The Academic and General Training papers are graded to the same scale.  The distinction between the two modules is one of genre or discourse type.  Background info : Academic papers may contain source texts featuring more difficult vocabulary or greater complexity of style.  It is usual that, to secure a given band score, a greater number of questions must be answered correctly on a General Training Reading paper. Eg. Academic reading 30/40 (70%)= 7 General Training 30/40= 6
  10. What’s ielts
  11. IELTS is the global test of first choice partially as a result of its Quality, Reliability and Integrity. QUALITY Quality of marking is important for any test and IELTS has a rigorous Quality assurance system for marking that is proven through the over half a million tests conducted each year (PSN, Clerical marking policy and annual audits of test centres are evidence of quality) RELIABILITY Reliability is also a key area The reliability of the test materials ensures that every version of the test is of a comparable level of difficulty so that a candidate’s result will be the same wherever and whenever they take the test – this is obviously crucial with a test that is conducted 48 times a year. QUALITY ASSURANCE This reliability is ensured through various quality assurance checks during the 2-year test production process. *(Question Paper Production Process) Aspects include the training of item writers, statistical analyses of material in pilot tests called pre-testing and standards fixing tests. * you can down load the whole process from the IELTS website under teaching and resources

  13. As we said, R and L are objectively marked by clerical markers. R and L papers contain 40 marks and each item is worth one mark. Each C’s Listening and Reading paper is marked and awarded a mark out of 40. There’s a band score conversion table for each version of the R and L papers. This table converts the raw score to a band score. Eg. A Candidate gets a raw score of 23 in the Listening paper. In one of the 2004 exam papers this raw score achieved a 6. Background info Change to GT Reading Task 2 as from May 2009 Currently, Section 2 of the General Training Reading paper focuses on the training context. From 1 May 2009, this section will focus on the work context (e.g. applying for jobs, company policies, pay and conditions, workplace facilities, staff development etc). The General Training module is increasingly recognised by employers, professional bodies and immigration authorities. This change will ensure that the module will more closely meet the needs of candidates who take IELTS for employment or immigration purposes. The other sections of the General Training Reading paper will remain unchanged. Currently, Section 2 of the General Training Reading paper focuses on the training context. 18. Face-to-face Speaking Test reflects the real world context in which a candidate would most likely need to use their spoken English. Candidates can ask for clarification and he or she can also be challenged by the examiner during the test. IELTS is unique with it face to face module – more interactive, reflects real life situations,
  19. For those of you who are not familiar with the test, this slide shows the Speaking Test format. Notes: Part 1: verbal questions based on familiar topic frames. Part 2: written input in the form of a general instruction and content-focused prompts. Examiner asks one or two questions at the end of the long turn. Part 3: Examiner invites candidate to participate in discussion of more abstract nature, based on verbal questions, thematically linked to Part 2 prompt.
  20. These are the four aspects of (or criteria for) a Speaking performance that the examiner rates. A public version of the descriptors for each of these is available on the IELTS website (link given at the end of the presentation). This version is based on descriptors used by the examiner, which give detailed descriptions of the key indicators for performance at each of the nine levels - You have a printout of these as a handout for reference. (show BDs)

  22. 31/05/10
  23. In this session, I'm going to give you an overview of the security procedures we have in place before, during and after the test from the test centre perspective.
  24. We are mindful of the claims that are made in the public domain about unauthorised access to test materials, test scores etc We monitor the result for the life of validity. A result can be investigated at any time through the 2 year period Candidates are always advised of action being taken and offered a voice in the process
  25. Results are reliable where ever and when ever the test is taken. rigorous and lengthy process = ensures every test version is comparable i.e all versions test to the same level of difficulty so all measure on the same ability scale As mentioned ESOL have a dedicated R & V team (leading experts in the field), who do all the test analysis to ensure that the same level of difficulty is being represented across all versions . As discussed in the QPP session all versions have the same content coverage i.e. contain a range of different topics , in the listening different accents its all thoroughly tested so no question will appear without having been thoroughly tested first There are 48 fixed test dates a year and this ensures that each test delivered on each date is unique = candidates can never sit the same full test twice. IELTS has a huge and continually refreshed bank of items so that some items may be recycled. Further guarantees that one test version will only appear once are in the fact that we divide the world in various zones which ensure that candidates cannot talk to each other after the test and relay what was in it. We do this by ensuring that each zone also has a different test version from others.
  26. When moving papers on test day from the locked storage unit to the test room they must be logged in and out e nsures a named person is responsible for test day materials at all times Test Administrators receive training in examining ID documents & impostor recognition by Canadian or Australian borders agencies which is cascaded through the team. On test day when the candidate registers they must produce 2 passport photos and valid ID - must be a passport or National ID card and if in a country other than their own, must be a passport. Copies of the ID or/and photograph may be provided before hand with the application , if so the same ID must be used when registering on test day . If the ID presented on test day is considered invalid , the candidate is turned away . A “three-way id check” is carried out comparing the valid ID, the passport sized photos & the applicant presenting at the registration desk. This check is to ensure the person at registration matches the and also the identity document and photograph which will eventually appear on the TRF. Where an administrator suspects a discrepancy ,- take a test-day photo which will be used on the final TRF. Candidate is also asked to return in person with the same ID to collect their results. In China candidates don’t submit photos in their application , they have to provide their ID card for inspection on test day – checked using mobile ID verification technology with access to the online Chinese govt ID verification database – all ID cards are then cross referenced to this govt database, making it a very safe and secure system. Additional ID checks and questions may also be applied at registration. Specific regulations on acceptable photos: : not be older than 6 months or black and white or wearing a hat or sunglasses; must be regulation size; show full face (in national or religious headwear can be accepted but must still show full face). Candidates must give all their belongings to test day staff to lock away in a separate secure room. Exception is transparent water bottles and transparent pencil cases.

  28. Candidate only receives 1 TRF for themselves for security reasons but can elect TRF to be sent up to ROs from centre. The TRF is a very important security measure No TRF should be accepted unless sent directly from a test center, and once received, should be verified on the TRFVS.  This process ensures that a finite number of original TRFs are distributed
