INTRODUCTION
 The skin of infant differs from adults as it’s less hairy ,thinner and
less cornified therefore proper care is to be taken .Therefore, to
avoid any type of irritation or infection baby care products are used.
 Johnson's Baby is an American brand of baby cosmetics owned
by Johnson & Johnson. The brand dates back to 1893 when
Johnson's Baby Powder was introduced.
 Baby Lotions, Oils, Powders and Creams are products that are
intended to be used to moisturize and soften the skin of infants and
children under the age of three. These products are specially
formulated to be mild and non-irritating. Many Baby Lotions,
Creams and Oils contain mineral oil.
FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF BABY
PRODUCTS
 Baby skin care products should protect baby skin from hostile
enviornment by cleansing the skin thoroughly from sebum , grime
and excreta.
 Examples : Baby Soaps , Baby oils, Baby lotions, Baby shampoos
etc;
 Many formulators are tempted to include a germicidal in baby care
products.
 Some germicidals like Cetyl pyridinium
chloride, Benzethonium chloride.
PRINCIPLES OF BABY SKIN CARE:
 Safe and trusted products for baby should be used for minimising
the chances of absorption of potentially harmful substances through
the skin.
 Mild and gentle baby products should be used as the babies skin is
thinner and more vulnerable to the irritation and physical damage
from harsh and harmful substances.
 External products that provide the required levels of moisture
should be applied as the skin of babies becomes dry quickly.
SAFETY OF BABY PRODUCTS
 Infant’s lack of resistance to bacterial infection demands that ideally
the baby products should be free from bacteria when sold .
 Preservatives should be added.
 They should have low bio-burden.
 Materials used in baby products should be harmless and non-toxic.
BABY OIL
BABY OIL
What is Baby Oil?
 Baby oil is usually 98% mineral oil and 2% fragrance.
 Mineral oil is inert which means it does not change or react with
other substances that it comes in contact with.
 In addition, mineral oil won't clog your pores; it actually sits on top
of your skin and creates a protective barrier for your skin so your
skin will not lose moisture.
 This ingredient will soften and soothe your skin and will help your
skin retain moisture.
 Bland vegetable oils like ground nut oil, mineral oil, lanolin
derivatives and some higher alcohols are used.
FORMULATION

BABY CREAMS AND LOTIONS
BABY CREAMS AND LOTIONS
 Shelmire demonstrated that a semipermeable film is formed after
water is evaporated from an O/W emulsion, especially when
hydrophillic additives(glycerol) are present.
 Lotions are better then oil as they are not occlusive.
 Traditionally baby creams and lotions can be prepared by using
triethanolamine stearate.
 Sorbitol can also be used in baby creams and lotions.
 Polyoxyethylene sorbitan lanolin derivatives are thought to be fairly
mild.

 Crodestas are widely used.
 Body lotions should maintain the viscosity throughout the shelf life
period.
 Antiseptics baby lotions can also be prepared using pyridinium chloride.
 Baby creams are more viscous therefore it includes fatty substances
example stearic acid.

BABY POWDERS
BABY TALCUM POWDER
 Baby powders contain an antiseptic ingredient.
 Baby powders are less perfumed.
 Talc is the most important ingredient.
 Very fine particles are removes with help of air classification
technique.
 These are used as lubricants.
 Baby powders are smooth.
 Emollient effects.
 Starches can also be use.
 Perfumes used are tested dermatologically.
INDIAN STANDARD FOR SKIN POWDER
 The powder should essentially be free from coloring matter, if may
be buffered to control pH (5.5-8.0) and should be free from boric
acid;
 The powder should pass fineness test;
 Total viable count should not be more than 100cfu per gm; Gram
negative pathogens should be absent.

BABY SHAMPOOS
BABY SHAMPOOS
 Baby shampoos are used for washing hair.
 The most important requirement of baby shampoos is it’s blandness
towards eyes , skin and hair.
 Non-irritating surfactants are used.
 Sting free formulations are made.

MANUFACTURE OF BABY CARE PRODUCTS
 Baby oil should be mixed with part of mineral oil and should be
mixed in a simple mixing vessel with a stirrer.
 General methods are used in manufacturing baby lotions and
creams.
 Baby powder should pass through microbiological examination.
 Bio-burden in baby cosmetics should be as low as possible.
USES
 Baby oils are used to provide nourishment to the hair.
 Baby lotions and creams also provide anti-septic activity.
 Baby creams are used for providing moisture to the skin.
 Baby powders are used as lubricants.
 Baby shampoos help in cleaning the hair.
