George Washington Carver George Washington Carver    was born a slave in 1864 near                                      Diamond Grove,                                          Missouri.
George Washington Carver George  and his mother were kidnapped from the Carver farm when George was a baby.  He never saw his mother again.
George Washington Carver George grew to love nature and plants as a boy.  He spent hours in the woods near his home learning about plants and talking to them.
George Washington Carver When George was older, he went to school away from home.  He was a very good artist and wanted to learn more about art and painting.
George Washington Carver To cover his basic needs and earn money for his education, George taught guitar lessons, typed telegrams, and took in laundry. His humble industriousness inspired his classmates.
George Washington Carver George decided in 1891 that he could do the greatest good by studying agriculture.  He enrolled at Iowa State University to better serve the needs of poor southern farmers.  After graduation, George became a Teacher at the  University. He                                     became known as                                           “The Plant Doctor”.
George Washington Carver 1 In 1896, Booker T. Washington invited George to join the faculty at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
George Washington Carver When George first arrived, his only lab equipment was a microscope.  But his resourcefulness came in handy. He took his students to the junkyard where they looked for  materials to make equipment.
George Washington Carver Southern farmers relied on cotton as a cash crop.  George started looking for other crops that would save the soil and help the farmers soon after he arrived at Tuskegee.
George Washington Carver Through many investigations and experiments.  George was able to discover over 300 new uses for peanuts, as well as over 100 uses for sweet potatoes, soybeans, pecans, and black-eyed peas.
George Washington Carver Carver experimented with and discovered many uses for peanuts and other crops so that farmers could easily sell these products. What character trait is this an example of? DETERMINATION TRUSTWORTHINESS HONESTY

George Washington Carver Picking up where Carver left off, many companies today are developing new products from plants. Scientists are working with corn, soy, sweet potatoes, and sugar beets as raw materials.

Born a slave, he learned how to read, And became a wonderful student indeed. What interested him, what he wanted to know, Were the lives of plants and things that grow. He became a teacher and a writer, too! And his inventions for farms would astonish you. Three hundred foods that use peanuts a little, Like peanut soap, peanut oil, and peanut brittle.                          Peanut lotion, peanut bars, and even peanut honey.                          But he never ever sold his ideas for money!                           He wanted farmers to use well their land.                          And he was very happy just to lend them a hand.
