The remainder of Genesis is the story of several generations of Abraham’s family. The patriarchs are greatly blessed by God but often tainted by jealousy and conflict with those around them. This comes to a head with Abraham’s grandsons. Joseph finds favor with his father Jacob, maybe a bit too much favor. Jacob’s favoritism is fuel to the fire of the jealousy of his older brothers and they sell him into slavery. Their intended purpose was to kill him, but God had a different plan. No matter how bad Joseph’s circumstances got, God showed up and granted him favor. Finally, as the second in command of Egypt, Joseph is in a position to make His brothers pay dearly. However, God protects him from a spirit of revenge, first by prophesying a ruler who would ultimately be born into the family of Jacob’s son, Judah. That ruler would be the Messiah who’s coming was purposed by God. As a capstone to the story of Joseph, God then assures him that what his brothers meant for evil, God meant for good. In Proverbs 19:21 God says through Solomon, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.
