n the last few years, when public capital markets were harder to access (particularly for junior companies), it became
increasingly common for us to be spending our time advising companies on possible mergers and acquisitions (M&A)
targets (or “partners” for the less aggressive term). While alternatives such as royalties, streaming agreements,
amalgamations, offtake agreements and private equity investments continue to exist, many mining companies are now
being forced to consider M&A as a way to increase efficiencies through economies of scale and simply survive. But the
road to a happy M&A marriage isn’t always a smooth one.

A new report finds that small and medium suppliers face growing expectations from their larger customers
to report on environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards.
The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) survey of 121 large companies and public-sector
buyers found that already, 82 per cent require some disclosure from their suppliers on ESG, but that’s
expected to grow to 92 per cent by 2024.

This is a great opportunity for the utility sector to re-look at their asset management through using vegetation and
weather management solutions. Mitigation of risk from climate is becoming a key focus area for the utility sector.

Autonomous Finance
22
Autonomous finance is a data-driven or algorithm-driven process that employs software to automate financial
operations and management.
Source - https://learn.g2.com/autonomous-finance
Key Stats
Consider the following statistics:
 89% of financial services leaders believe that the first financial services companies to deploy autonomous finance will
carve out a large competitive advantage.
 60% of financial institutions believe that autonomous finance enhances personalisation capabilities, which improves
their customer experience (CX).
 As things stand, over 50% of the following finance and accounting activities are mostly or partially automated:
processing of transactions, procurement, preparation of financial reports, and planning/forecasts, etc.

This blog is about Ontario. The same issues that Ontario is encountering with the management of sensitive
land is similar to what the private sector encounters as part of developing capacity in a sustainable way
that takes into account biodiversity.

Summary
24
• The mining, oil, gas, agriculture, forestry, and mining continue to face environmental, social, and
governance policy review including reporting of key metrics as part of ESG reporting cycle.
• There is more focus on profitability and investment returns as part of the integrated planning and
reporting cycle.
Blog – What is next for Mining, Forestry, Agriculture, Oil and Natural Gas – September 2023
