  1. Before getting into the nitty-gritty of this webinar, I want to share the story behind why we created this software tool in the first place. Couple of years ago, I was in a job that really sucked. I didn’t have to look for a job in almost 10 years so I didn’t have anything beyond an outdated resume. So I hired a great career coach and paid him $1800 to help me get to the next stage in my career. In our first meeting, the coach simply asked: “Where do you want to work?”. I was pretty confused why he needed to know the companies I wanted to work for. I blurted out the first two names that came to my mind “Intel” or “Nike”. Long story short, the coach and I spent the next 6 months discovering my strengths & aspirations. And more importantly researched & identified the companies where I could thrive. In the end, I got a fantastic job leading the software team at a small 20-person company. That journey to my dream job was a transformational exercise for me. So, instead of taking that job, I decided to build a software tool that would leverage the same strategy and help every college student reach their career goals.
  2. Now that you’ve picked some companies the next stage is jump into action and systematically move closer to that dream job. We will spend a few minutes now looking at specific things you can do to turn yourself a very desirable candidate at these companies
  3. The next thing we recommend is to explore the company’s industry landscape thoroughly.
  4. First Burueau of Labor Statistics puts out detailed reports on many industries You can also search for some free reports on Hoovers.com and of course google. Learning about the industry you are getting into is critical for a couple reasons: You want to get into an industry that is growing. It is much easier to enter a growing industry rather than a declining one. Companies in growing industries have more job openings naturally. You also want to understand and leverage various types of growth. For example, american population is aging rapidly which means any services geared towards the 60+ population is a good bet, including health-care and financial services. ** Our tool provides access to industry reports for the company you are pursuing. In this case, New Relic operates in the _____ industry and you can check out multiple industry reports right from the action items.

All their marketing is geared towards people who are not athletes and may never be athletes but they want to appeal your ego by selling you shoes and gear worth 100s of dollars. Identifying the value proposition is not the easiest thing since many companies can’t figure it out themselves. But once you do through your research, it becomes a very powerful tool in your job search.
