If you've ever taught English to children, you know how remarkable it is--they absorb everything, and acquire language quickly and naturally. But teaching adults requires a different pedagogical approach: their brains constantly analyze, synthesize, and relate everything new to something they already know. It's how our minds organize new information. This is our great strength and also a bit of a problem, when trying to learn a new pronunciation system.
