  1. Thank you for the opportunity to speak with you about the IBM Academic Initiative. Introduce myself….then I would like to speak with you today about the skill gaps and opportunities we are seeing in the marketplace and how we can partner with you to help fill these critical gaps.
  2. Based on what we are hearing from our customer base as well as various market studies there are some significant shifts that we are seeing in the marketplace that are driving skill needs in the market place. Companies today more than ever need the knowledge and skills to address and/or leverage these shifts to increase and even maintain their competitiveness. Whether these skills are around speed to market with mobile solutions, driving better business outcomes through the ability to turn data into relevant information and that information into actionable insight or ensuring their critical applications and assets are secure and available. Unfortunately, IBM and our customers are seeing a large gap in the workforce who have the critical skills to capitalize on these shifts…next chart… _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Other data points: 1 in 3 frequently make critical decisions without the information they need or trust. 56% are overwhelmed by the amount of data their company manages. 1 in 2 don’t have access to the information, across their organization, needed to do their jobs.

Based on a recent tech trends study, among organizations worldwide today…. ¼ have major skill gaps in mobile, business analytics and security. 1 in 10 organizations have all the skills it needs to be successful in applying advanced technology in these areas for better business outcomes. And 40% report skill shortages to manage information… As a result: 1 in 3 managers frequently make critical decisions without the information they need or trust. 1 in 2 don’t have access to the information, across their organization, needed to do their jobs. We also know that: Organizations that apply analytics are seeing 33% more revenue growth …12X more profit growth. Top performing enterprises use analytics 5x more than lower performers.   4. IBM among others, recognizes that universities such as yourself are key to solving this skills shortage problem. But a recent study that reached out to the academic and student community also found there are challenges to meet this demand. A couple of things that were specifically called out in this study – which may or may not apply to you – First - return on rising cost of education - As we saw on the previous slide, job opportunities in these skill areas are highly lucrative. The next two challenges: Ability to incorporate real-world, experiential learning as well as time to implement change in curriculum are areas where the IBM Academic Initiative is able to truly provide value to partnering universities to overcome…

As a result of this skill shortage, IBM clients consistently mention four key skills they are searching to hire… In the area of Analytics and Big Data, the need for Business Analysts who can apply Business Intelligence, predictive analytics and other techniques to gain critical, actionable business insight to drive better business outcomes. As well as the need for deeper technical skills of a Data Scientist. In the area of Information Security – individuals who can apply a broad portfolio of security skills and systems thinking to business priorities And finally the next generation of software engineer who can effectively work in a fast-paced, ever changing global development environment.   6. The IBM Academic Initiative program is how we put these critical assets into the hands of faculty members to bring to life the theory and concepts being taught in the classroom.
