Part of the Faculty of Humanities
Founded in 1985
550 B.A.+ M.A. or M.A. students
– Annual intake about 80 students (throughput high;
practically all who start take an M.A. degree)
– About 1000 new applicants
85 doctoral students
30 exchange students every year
Personnel about 30, seven professors
3. Department of Communication
Premises
The Department of Communication used to be
located in Tourula, about two kilometers from
the campus, from 1990 to 2010.
The department was temporarily relocated to
the Main Campus in several buildings for the
Spring semester 2011.
In January 2012 the department was given a
permanent home on the Old Campus (together
with University PR Services)

Intercultural Communication, since 1997
All have M.A. and Ph.D. programs, the first three
also B.A. programs
The department also coordinates: Intercultural
Studies, an interdisciplinary minor
5. Department of Communication
Journalism
Focuses on journalistic work and media
research.
The professional objective of journalism is
to develop students’ skills for, and insight
into, journalistic work in various media
(newspapers, magazines, radio, tv,
internet).

Speech Communication
Focuses on interaction and communication
between individuals, whether in private or
public contexts, face to face, or through
various communication technologies.
Educates communication experts for
various fields: education, business,
administration, media, politics and cultural life.

Organizational Communication
and Public Relations
Focuses on communication in and
between organizations and on
communication management.
Studies prepare for example for working
in PR professions and in communication
management.

Intercultural Communication
Focuses on intercultural
competence, intercultural
relationships and work in
multicultural organizations.
Studies prepare for work
multicultural and international
organizations.
The working language of the
program is English.

Intercultural Studies
An interdisciplinary minor for undergraduates of
all faculties, 25 ECTS.
Introduces students to intercultural issues arising
from various contexts of research and practice.
Offers a theoretical and practical framework to
enhance students’ awareness and knowledge of
cultures in interaction as well as their
competence in intercultural communication.

Exchange
Teacher and student exchange (Erasmus) with 35
partner universities in Europe
Student and teacher exchange within the Nordplus
and North-South-South programs
Student exchange also within other programs and
bilateral agreements (newest: Hong Kong)
– European Masters in Intercultural Communication
Network – nine European universities that organize
annually Eurocampus studies (this year Coimbra,
Portugal)
