  2. 2. Outcomes <ul><li>By the end of the lesson you should be able to : </li></ul><ul><li>Describe what is meant by procedures </li></ul><ul><li>Be able to give examples of procedures that promote health and safety </li></ul>

Learning Outcome 3 <ul><li>Know how to maintain the safety of participants and colleagues in a sports environment </li></ul><ul><li>Procedures: operating procedures and good practice, eg staff training, staff development, risk assessments, emergency procedure protocols, first aid, communications cascade system for notification of incidents; </li></ul><ul><li>safety procedures and protocols , eg established to maintain a safe environment, governing body guidelines, equipment manufacturers’ guidelines, when to consult with others, who to consult with, local and national requirements </li></ul>

Background <ul><li>Procedures and policies are there to benefit participants and colleagues </li></ul><ul><li>Various legislation and regulations in place that an organisation must work in a certain way </li></ul><ul><li>Management of health and safety at work regulations 1999 – means that every organisation with 5 or more employees must have a health and safety policy </li></ul>

Procedures <ul><li>Procedures normally mean a set of actions, acts or operations which have to be repeated in the same manner in order always </li></ul><ul><li>So it is a sequence of things that a centre must do in accordance with their policies </li></ul><ul><li>Examples – Normal or Standard operating procedures </li></ul>

Operating procedures and good practice <ul><li>The general manager and duty managers are responsible for running a centre </li></ul><ul><li>They are responsible for ensuring staff get training on the centres running </li></ul><ul><li>Use two manuals to do this </li></ul><ul><li>Standard / Normal operating procedures (S/NOP’s) </li></ul><ul><li>Emergency Operating Procedures (EOP) </li></ul>

Normal Operating Procedures <ul><li>Details and dimensions of the whole centre and the facilities there </li></ul><ul><li>Indicates any potential risk factors and hazards – known hazards and pool hazards </li></ul><ul><li>Methods of dealing with the public </li></ul><ul><li>Rules and regulations the public must adhere to </li></ul>

Checking Facilities <ul><li>Regular inspections to check the facility is functioning properly </li></ul><ul><li>Various authorities come in to check the equipment </li></ul><ul><li>Fire department – chubb check fire extinguishers </li></ul><ul><li>No legal obligation to inspect the equipment a centre can be prosecuted if the equipment is faulty </li></ul>
  11. 11. Staff Training <ul><li>Up to date staff with qualifications in house training or external training </li></ul><ul><li>Pool lifeguards – weekly sessions </li></ul><ul><li>Basic first aid award is an expectation </li></ul><ul><li>Weekly staff meetings </li></ul>
  12. 12. Staff Development <ul><li>Opportunities should be given to allow staff to develop and progress their knowledge </li></ul><ul><li>Staff should have a staff development plan </li></ul>

Risk Assessments <ul><li>As previously discussed </li></ul><ul><li>Management of Health and safety at work act 1999 </li></ul><ul><li>Wherever possible avoid risks altogether </li></ul><ul><li>Try to combat risks at the source </li></ul><ul><li>Ensure all staff understand and review the risk assessments </li></ul>

Emergency Procedure Protocols <ul><li>What to do if there is a first aid injury </li></ul><ul><li>First aid equipment – boxes, lists, locations </li></ul><ul><li>First aid room – size, design and location </li></ul><ul><li>First aiders and any training programmes </li></ul><ul><li>Certificates are normally valid for three years </li></ul>
  15. 15. First Aid <ul><li>Hospital or premises treated? </li></ul><ul><li>Employer’s responsibility to provide adequate number of first aiders </li></ul><ul><li>A list of who these people are and where they are located is needed </li></ul>
