This document contains an induction assessment for a media studies course. It begins by having the student rate their skills and experience in areas like Mac computers, Photoshop, and using DSLR cameras. It then provides two assignments for the student - the first is a 500 word analysis of representation of age and social class in the TV show "People Just Do Nothing," making references to techniques like mise-en-scene and camera work. The second assignment asks the student to create flat plans and a front cover for a new college magazine in Photoshop, using a downloaded font. The document provides a sample analysis of social class representation in an excerpt from the TV show through techniques like costume, set design, camera angles, and

Assignment 1: Write a 500 written analysis of representation of age and social
class. You must make reference to the micro areas of mise en scene and
camera, using appropriate terminology.
People just do nothing
The first shot we see in the scene is a medium long shot where we see most of
the characters and some of the environment behind, this scene is set in front of
high rise flats, this shows that these characters are stereotypically lower class as
these areas are associated with poverty and crime. By placing these characters
in this location makes the audience automatically think that they are of a lower
class for being in an area that is typically rough. This is then shown again as we
get a long shot of the characters and we get to see what their costumes are, all
of the characters in the frame are dressed in tracksuits, this then shows the
audience that they are of a lower class as “tracksuits” are very informal and are
typically worn by lower class people, and these costumes could even suggest to
the audience that the characters are criminals as people of a lower class are
stereotypically involved in crime.
In the next scene the use of dialogue shows the audience how uneducated the
character “grindah” is when he says “angel is getting Christianed” by his
mispronunciation of the word “christened” reveals to the audience that he is of a
lower class as typically youths from a lower income family would skip school and
wouldn’t get a good education, thus linking back to why “grindah” uses this
vocabulary.
The use of mise en scene in the next scene reveals again that these characters
are of a lower social class when we get to see the inside of their flat, the areas
that we see are very cluttered and messy, and the connotations of mess and dirt
are poverty and an area of low income, this reveals to the audience that they
are of a lower class as they do not keep their living space tidy.
2. INDUCTION ASSESSMENT2015
These characters (grindah, beats, decoy) are then represented very
stereotypically again when we see a long shot of them using illegal drugs as
typically people that use drugs are from low income families and live in places
full of poverty, this is then reinforced with the use of dialogue of “blazing all
night” thus revealing them to be very generic lower class characters.
Social status is then revealed in the performance of the two characters “Grindah”
and “Beats” throughout the scene we see beats trying to impress grindah and is
constantly trying to win his respect, this shows the audience that beats is of a
lower social status as he is always looking up to grindah. This is then reinforced
when the camera uses a high angle when beats is in the frame to show his
inferiority to grindah as the angle makes beats look smaller in the frame, and by
using a low angle when grindah is in the frame reveals that grindah is clearly of
a higher authority.
Overall the use of mise en scene and the performance of the actors revealed to
the audience how lower class the characters are, by the use of costumes,
dressing the characters in track suits and their dialogue “christened” clearly
portrays them as lower class and common.
