I: A proposal that will empower Kenyan youth.
a: Entrepreneurial skills and employment.
b: Engage in local and national issues.
c: To be positive forces of change in their
communities.
d: Enhances leadership capabilities.
e: Expand genuine voice to promote youth
interest and needs while being advocated
by youth organizations.
Focus of Program

4. Scope of Cowpeas for Peace
- 5 year program
- $2.5 million budget (per year)
- Two full time staff members stationed
in Nakuru, Kenya.
- Administrative support in College
Station, Texas.
- Undertaken by Texas A&M University
- College of Agriculture and Life
Science and the Borlaug Institute for
International Agriculture.

5. Goals of Cowpeas for Peace
Enhance technical skills through vocational education
in agricultural business in order to create job skills
and market opportunities.
Develop leadership organizations to generate new
possibilities for community well-being for the youth of
Kenya.
Enhance youth understanding and voices in policy
dialogue and interethnic coalitions.

6. Objectives - Goal 1
Enhance technical skills through vocational
education in agricultural business in order to create
job skills and market opportunities.
Needs assessment
Secure 200 participants
Increase technical knowledge by 50%
Obtain 10% net profit from sale of cowpeas

7. Objectives - Goal 2
Develop leadership organizations to generate new
possibilities for community well-being for the youth of
Kenya.
Increase leadership knowledge by 50%
Increase interethnic understanding by 50%
Coordinate and execute 20 hours of community
service per student per semester

8. Objectives - Goal 3
Enhance youth understanding and voices in policy
dialogue and interethnic coalitions.
Increase parliamentary procedure knowledge by
50%.
Increase positive political activity by 20%.

9. Major Methods
Formal classroom vocational education program with
laboratory section for hands on learning.
Creation of youth service organization by vocational
education program participants.
Train-the-Trainer program to develop 10% of participants
for advanced leadership roles within both formal
classroom and youth service organization.
