Team 8 is exploring how citizen science can be used to validate Earth observation data from satellites and make that data more useful. They are developing ideas to address the social, scientific, technical, and economic challenges of citizen science. The team held a webinar that discussed how standards can help combine citizen science data with Earth observation and other data sources. They are seeking participants and taking steps like webinars and meetings to further their work before presenting at a workshop in May.

In principle, there is great potential for citizen
scientists – or the wider public – to validate what
satellites observe or to put those images to use.
In practice, the implementation of such ideas is
faced by social, scientific, technical and economic
challenges. This team will explore these
challenges in order to develop fundable ideas.

Main points from the Team 8 Webinar
• Standards, interoperability and integration stimulate new ways to
use data
• The potential of the open data allows us to create new visualisations and
applications
• Standards are really key to combining CS data, EO data and other data sources
web-based servers, smartphones, apps, GIS software
• Obstacles and pathways to Citizen Science participation and data
uptake include :
• Concerns about data quality
• Need for attractive interfaces
• Need to show use of citizens’ input
