How to play poker

  1. 1. HOW TO PLAY POKER
  2. 2. INTRODUCTION  Poker is played from a standard pack of 52 cards. (Some variant games use multiple packs or add a few cards called jokers.)  The cards are ranked (from high to low) Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, Ace. (Ace can be high or low, but is usually high). There are four suits (spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs); however, no suit is higher than another.  All poker hands contain five cards, the highest hand wins.  There are many variations of Poker. Games include, 5 card draw poker, 7 card stud poker, Texas Hold’em.
  3. 3. The Basics of Texas Hold'emPoker  Texas Hold'em Poker is a community card game that can be played with anywhere from 2-10 players.  One player acts as dealer. This position is called the button and it rotates clockwise after every hand.  The two players to the left of the dealer are called the small blind and the big blind, respectively.  These two positions require forced bets of a pre-determined amount and are the only players to put money in the pot before the cards are dealt (if no ante in place).  Every player then receives two cards face down. These are called "hole cards".  Once all hole cards have been dealt, the first betting round begins with the player sitting immediately to the left of the big blind. This player can fold, call (match the amount of the big blind) or raise.
  4. 4.  Betting then continues clockwise, with each player having the option to call the amount of the highest bet before them, bet or raise.  When the first betting round is completed, three community cards are flipped face up on the table. This is called the flop.  The second round of betting begins with the first remaining player seated to the left of the button. The betting resumes, clockwise, with each player having the option to check (if no bet in front of them), bet (or raise if a bet before them), call or fold.  When the second round of betting is finished, a fourth community card is flipped face up on the table. This is called the turn.
  5. 5.  The third round of betting commences with the first remaining player sitting to the left of the button.  When the third round of betting is over, a fifth community card is flipped face up on the table. This is called the river.  The fourth round of betting starts with the first remaining player seated to the left of the button. The betting continues to move clockwise.
  6. 6. Texas Holdem Poker In Hold'em, players receive two down cards as their personal hand (hole cards), after which there is a round of betting. Three board cards are turned simultaneously (called the “flop”) and another round of betting occurs. The next two board cards are turned one at a time, with a round of betting after each card. The board cards are community cards, and a player may use any five-card combination from among the board and personal cards. A player may even use all of the board cards and no personal cards to form a hand (play the board). A dealer button is used. The usual structure is to use two blinds, but it is possible to play the game with one blind, multiple blinds, an ante, or combination of blinds plus an ante.
  7. 7. In any normal poker game, players Bet strategically by using a number of actions available to them. The operations are as follows: CHECK – If no one has bet, you can check. By checking sends you ride on to the player on the right (i.e. clockwise). It does not fact interest in the pot, only the right to bid this time around. If all players check in a round of betting, it is considered completed. BET – If there is not yet a bet in the current round of betting, any other poker player can call the bet or can raise the bet or even a player can fold it. FOLD – By folding, declines to him all interest in the pot. A player who folds do not and will not be able to bet more money during the hand, but he cannot win the hand. CALL – If there has been a bet in the current round of the game, a player can call. To call the player must match the current bet (s) made by his opponent (s). RAISE – If there has been a bet in the current betting round, a player may raise. In order to raise the player must match the current bet and make a higher bet. All subsequent players to call a raise or re-raise (raise again) if they will remain in the pot.
  8. 8. Two cards (hole cards) are dealt face down to each player with the player in the small blind receiving the first card and the player in the button seat receiving the last card dealt. (As in most poker games, the deck is a standard 52-card deck containing no jokers.) These cards are the players' hole or pocket cards. These are the only cards each player will receive individually, and they will only (possibly) be revealed at the showdown, making Texas hold 'em a closed poker game..
  9. 9.  The hand begins with a "pre-flop" betting round, beginning with the player to the left of the big blind (or the player to the left of the dealer, if no blinds are used) and continuing clockwise.  A round of betting continues until every player has folded, put in all of their chips, or matched the amount put in by all other active players. See betting for a detailed account. Note that the blinds are considered "live" in the pre-flop betting round, meaning that they are counted toward the amount that the blind player must contribute. If all players call around to the player in the big blind position, that player may either check or raise.  After the pre-flop betting round, assuming there remain at least two players taking part in the hand, the dealer deals a flop, three face-up community cards.  The flop is followed by a second betting round. This and all subsequent betting rounds begin with the player to the dealer's left and continue clockwise.
  10. 10. After the flop betting round ends, a single community card (called the turn or fourth street) is dealt, followed by a third betting round.
  11. 11. A final single community card (called the river or fifth street) is then dealt, followed by a fourth betting round and the showdown, if necessary.
  12. 12. Three 10’s are the best of these and the result is shown as (three cards of the same rank) beats two pair.
