Karen – Shooting Script
FADE IN:
INT. KOREAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL – HALLWAY – NIGHT – 19:00
Long shot and panning shot - man murdering a student in
school, choking her to death, holding her by her throat.
The student screams (SFX) as she is being murdered.
FADE TO BLACK:
EXT. KOREAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL – DAY 08:10
Mid shot to long tracking shot - MARY walking into the
entrance of the school.
CUT TO:
INT. KOREAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL – DAY 09:00
MARY walks down the hallway, her fact depicts how nervous
she feels. She walks into her classroom biting her lips
sits down, drumming her fingers on the table.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. KOREAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL – DAY 12:30
POV shot – bell rings for lunch, MARY goes to the canteen,
carrying her lunch tray and trying to find a place to sit
down. A group of students gesture her to come sit with
them.
CUT TO:
Over the shoulder shot – EVAN is watching MARY walking over
to them.
EVAN faces MARY.
EVAN
Hey, you’re Mary, the new student right?
CUT TO:
Over the shoulder shot – MARY standing, acting shy with her
lunch tray and facing EVAN.
MARY
Yeah, I am.
CUT TO:
2. 2.
Over the shoulder shot – EVAN and CHLOE are smiling at MARY.
EVAN waves at MARY and points and CHLOE.
EVAN
Hey! I’m Evan and this is Chloe.
CUT TO:
Over the shoulder shot – MARY laughs nervously and smiles
shyly, lifting her hand to wave.
MARY
Hi
CUT TO:
Mid-shot – NICK walks up towards EVAN, CHLOE and MARY and
waves to MARY while smirking.
EVAN
Nick
CUT TO:
Over the shoulder shot – MARY laughs again nervously and
smiles.
MARY
Hey
CUT TO:
Mid-shot – LUCY comes from MARY's side and pulls MARY in for
a hug.
EVAN
And Lucy
CUT TO:
Mid-shot – MARY hugs LUCY back smiling
MARY
Hi Lucy
CUT TO:
Mid-shot – EVAN gesturing MARY to come sit with them using
his hand.
EVAN
Why don’t you come and sit with us?
CUT TO:
Mid-shot - MARY looks relieved and smiles brightly.
MARY
I’d love to, thanks.

CUT TO:
Long shot - MARY sits down and starts to chat and eat her
lunch with her new friends.
SFX of everyone in the canteen talking at lunchtime.
CUT TO:
INT. KOREAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL – CLASSROOM – DAY – 13:30
Mid shot – MARY and LUCY working in a free lesson when the
lights suddenly switches off.
MARY
What was that?
CUT TO:
LUCY
Oh, probably just a loose wire got detached or something...
LUCY gets up from her sea and walks to the light switch to
switch on the lights.
CUT TO:
Suddenly MARY’s laptop turns off and MARY's face is full of
surprise and shock with her hands raised in the air.
MARY
Woah, even my laptop switched off…
CUT TO:
Depth of field shot of the door and MARY and NICK - MARY
and NICK walked into the gym when suddenly the door slams
shut and both characters jump.
CUT TO:
Long shot and two shot – MARY and NICK in the gym storage
room, searching through the gym storage equipment.
CUT TO:
Close up shot of MARY looking for gym equipment.
MARY
Weird things keep happening… almost as if a spirit is
visiting us…
CUT TO:
Long shot and two shot – NICK closer towards the camera,
looking through the gym equipment.

NICK
Hey, what’s the date today?
CUT TO:
Shot reverse shot – EVAN closer towards the camera, stops
looking for equipment and looks up towards EVAN.
MARY
Uh… the 27th of October… why?
CUT TO:
Close up - EVAN whispers to himself.
EVAN
Oh… it must be KAREN… don’t worry about it.
CUT TO:
Close up – MARY looking at EVAN confused and scared.
MARY
KAREN? Who’s KAREN?!
CUT TO:
Two shot- EVAN grabs hold of MARY's hand and drags her out of
the gym – out of frame.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. KOREAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL – CANTEEN – DAY 12:30
Everyone gathers around the table at lunchtime, EVAN starts
to tell MARY about KAREN while looking around to make sure no
one is watching and whispering. Everyone is leaning in to
listen.
CUT TO:
Mid shot -
EVAN
In the 60’s there was a girl called KAREN and she was
murdered one night in our school. The school hired
investigator after investigator but they were still unable
to find out who the murderer was…
CUT TO:
Mid shot - While everyone is nodding in agreement, MARY gasps
in shock.

Mid close up shot - CHLOE talks in a cautious manner while
everyone leans in even closer to listen.
CUT TO:
CHLOE
A few years passed where the school remained peaceful until
one year things started to happen...
CUT TO:
Mid close up shot - LUCY cuts off CHLOE and continues the
story in an enthusiastic manner while keeping her eyes on
MARY for her reaction, everyone else keeps their eyes on
MARY while nodding in agreement.
LUCY
Every school year without fail on the week of the 25th of
October, KAREN always comes back to “haunt” the school…
CUT TO:
Mid close up shot - MARY frowns slightly and starts to look
nervous and scared.
MARY
Wha-
CUT TO:
Mid close up shot - EVAN talks to MARY in a calm and reassuring
way and the others just keep silent with their eyes on EVAN.
EVAN
I know it sounds creepy but really she’s harmless, all she
does is close doors or plays with the electrical circuits
but she’s never done anything harmful... yet.
CUT TO:
Mid close up shot - MARY looks away and uses her hand to
cover her mouth slightly.
CUT TO:
INT. MARY’S APARTMENT – NIGHT – 22:00
Mid shot - MARY invites her friends over to hang out and play
some games; they are in the middle of playing truth or dare.
EVAN spins the bottle and it lands on MARY.
Everyone is excited and EVAN asks MARY a question in
excitement.

EVAN
Oh! MARY! Truth or dare?
CUT TO:
Mid shot - MARY looks around at everyone in a questionable
manner before frowning and squinting her eyes slightly. She
is rubbing her chin as if in deep thought but replies in a
nervous yet excited way.
MARY
Hmm… I’m feeling brave tonight, dare!
CUT TO:
Mid close up shot - CHLOE is think to think of a dare and
says in a slightly scary manner, trying to scare MARY.
CHLOE
Okay! Dare right? I dare you to go to the toilet and do the
“ritual” to wake KAREN up.
CUT TO:
Mid close up shot - MARY looks slightly scared and
questionable about what the ritual is, LUCY whispers into
MARY’s ear in reassurance. The audience is able to hear LUCY
whispering.
LUCY
Don’t worry; it’s just a myth. It has never worked before,
besides, even if she did wake up she’s harmless.
CUT TO:
Mid close up shot - MARY sighs in relief, thankful of LUCY's
reassurance. She accepts the dare with full confidence.
MARY
Sure, but you’ll have to teach me the ritual.
CUT TO:
Mid shot - CHLOE gets up smiling and excited pulling MARY
with her to the toilet.
CUT TO:
Mid close up shots and two shots - A rapid succession of
shots (with creepy background music) of MARY finishing the

ritual and the girls go back to sit down with the rest of
group. NICK smirks at CHLOE and asks CHLOE if she finished.
NICK
She did it?
CHLOE
Yeah she did!
Two shots and mid close up shot - LUCY whispers to MARY while
the rest of the group decide who is next.
LUCY
See? I told you it wasn’t so bad.
Mid close up shot - MARY smiles at LUCY.
MARY
Thanks Lucy.
CUT TO:
Mid shot - MARY says good night to her friends as they are
leaving and gets ready for bed, brushing her teeth and washing
her face before walking to her bed already changed into her
pyjamas. When she goes to sleep, she starts to dream.
DISSOLVE TO:
She begins to dream about her being on the computer at school,
communicating with KAREN who assigns her a ‘mission’ in order
to gain revenge.
However, in reality what MARY doesn’t know is that KAREN has
used the dream to hallucinate MARY – the audience does not know
this.
CUT TO:
The next day MARY goes to school and switches on the computer,
which connects to the “Karen Network”, awakening the spirit
of KAREN. MARY becomes possessed by KAREN (which can be seen
with her coloured contacts and emotionless face)when using
the computer under the KAREN network, causing her to go on a
killing spree.
CUT TO:
The trailer ends with MARY going on a killing spree and she
goes after people and starts to stab them at her school.
