Editor's Notes

  1. Agenda…. Here’s how we’ll spend our time- CLEAR SLIDEI have prepared 4 tips that we’ve found the most common and helpful but I’m expecting you to contribute brilliance as well….So let’s talk about how this is going to happen…..
  2. This picture you can see not everyone’s looking the same direction, and frankly the others don’t seem too concerned about it…. But you and I know that this can be a very, very big deal and there are some very real business outcomes at stake. If you’re a regular listener to The Cranky Middle Manager you know that we’ve had some of the biggest names in the world talk about these problems……TRANSITION IN SILENCE OR CHECK IN
  3. Here are the most common problems that managers report when handling remote employees
  4. Now here are the issues from the employee’s standpoint. How many of you are remote employees?Anything else that you feel is important we should add to this list? Now these problems sound personal, but at a fundamental, institutional level these have to be addressed by companies because the costs are staggering……..
  5. Things to mention:Judy Bardwick’s One Foot Out the Door calls it a Psychological Recession…. Turnover rates among remote employees are higher, so are costs associated with training them…. They have to be more independentMissed deadlines of course affect everyone’s workAll this leads to lost dollars….. Or Euros….or Yuan or whateverSo how do you over come this problem…well there are a lot of things you have to do. One thing you can use, and most of you do or have is web meetings like this one…..
  6. 2.5 Billion Euros
  7. We don’t care what platform you useThey all have their charms and drawbacks…We have also all been on the receiving end of meetings that were just awful and in fact had the opposite effect.
  8. It comes down to a balance between Richness and Scope…. This is work I”ve borrowed from the Swiss researcher Bettina Buechel, you can look her up, she gets all the credit, but as a manager I’ve found this information incredibly helpful, because we all have default comfort levels…some of us like to manage through email…. Some of us want to be face to face whenever possible…. Decide the appropriate medium for the message……FIRST LETS DEFINE OUR TERMS HERE
  9. Describe RichnessFace to face is obviously the richest form…but it’s not always possible
  10. Scope is not evil….sometimes you have to get a message out fast and consistentlyLet’s look at where different media fit on this matrix….
  11. Clear SlideNotice that web meetings are high in richness…..or can be…. The more people on them, them higher the scope and the less rich…also, if the meeting is truly two way like this one is…… it’s higher… If it’s just a data dump…… then we may be fooling ourselves… the trick is to use these tools to make them as rich as possible and still meet our need for scope and timeliness…… There are things you can do and not do so well with these meetings…..
  12. In order to balance the needs of the associations with the needs of your participants, you have to balance all these features. Be aware, that an effective webinar will cost you something. Just because it’s on the web doesn’t mean it’s free. Test whatever platform you’re looking at with users outside of your network and on a number of connections. You’ll want to make sure that you don’t have connectivity, firewall or freezing problems. The less feature-rich the platform, the easier it will be accessible. Also watch out for which Operating System they use. Some platforms (Netspoke, for example) don’t work well with Windows Vista.
  13. Watch the time…..Now I’d appreciate it if you’d hang in there for another two minutes…. I want to share something with you…..
  14. Of course, the purpose of doing this is not just for the sake of using the technology…just like on CMM…the goal is to…
