started in the 1960’s in the United States.
• The “Pop” in Pop Art is actually short for
popular.
• During this art movement, artists created
artwork that showed popular people or items.
• Many famous artists became well known
during this time.
3. Andy Warhol
• Andy Warhol was a famous American painter
and printmaker.
• Andy Warhol is actually considered the
leader of the Pop Art movement.
• Andy made colorful prints of many movie
stars during this time, people like Elvis and
Marilyn Monroe. He also did prints of
Campbell Soup cans and Brillo Pads.
5. Roy Lichtenstein
• Roy Lichtenstein is also and American painter.
• Roy Lichtenstein is best known for re-creating
stills from comics that were famous in the
1960’s.
• When newspapers print comics, they actually
color in the comics using dots because it saves
them money.
• Roy Lichtenstein copied this style in his own
artwork, so you’ll notice his work is filled in
with dots.
7. Claes Oldenburg
• Claes Oldenburg was a Swedish sculptor who
worked mostly in America.
• Although Oldenburg didn’t consider himself a
Pop Artist, he did sculptures that depicted
popular items that people see everyday.
• Oldenburg made sculptures that were
huge, so big, they filled up a room or had to
be put in fields or cities.
9. Wayne Theibaud
• Wayne Theibaud was an American artist who
did mainly paintings.
• Theibaud is best known for his dessert
pictures.
• Theibaud liked to use tints and used vary
little background so that viewers focused only
on the dessert.
